Good roads going from Virginia Beach up to Boston, maybe a bit beyond?

Last time I left my kids with my parents and borrowed the old man's RX-8 for a couple weeks I visited the fine roads of West Virginia and SE Ohio.

This time I'll have my motion sickness-prone wife with me, and will be heading from Virginia up to Boston and back, also hitting Philly and NYC. The terrain is certainly less entertaining. But are there good roads to be had on this route?

I might head up to Maine for a day. Not really time for it, but I've long wanted to visit that part of the country.

Most people will tell you there are no good roads on that trip, that you'll be stuck on ugly I-95 the whole time. Not necessarily!

If you have the time, go up Route 1 along the Jersey coast. You can find out about it here…

You can also follow the Appalachian Trail:

(Those are from a great book called "Road Trip USA" all about taking older, scenic, 2-lane roads instead of the interstates.)

Thanks, I went that route nearly 20 years ago. Remember a bunch of pretty little towns.
