Good gas mileage on trip!
 

Hey all,
This weekend I took a trip from Bellevue Wa to Yakima Wa. I had my cruse control set between 70 and 80mph. I only had a few moments of short burst acceleration. If you are from the northwest, you will know its not easy to climb the pass and drive over the mountains. I was very happy to see that i got 23 MPG on the whole trip. I prepared myself to fill up and get 20 or less.

PS: I log all of mileage at : https://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do . My total average is 20 MPG.

good news, at last some one could get the mpg as posted by mazda.

it gets boring cruise controlling in the 70s. I did it for 30 minutes and started falling asleep.

Im with you on that one.

however i did try to do the 65 mph for a whole tank, and all i can say is :cussing: im never doing it again.

I did get 22 mpg on that tank tho :yesnod:

When did Mazda start quoting mileage? New one to me..

Also, I get 22 MPG like clockwork. Usually get over 20 even if I drive hard some. And I deal with Atlanta traffice.

When I drove from DC down to Danville, VA (~250 miles) I got 23 mpg @ 75 mph. It was great. :)

I just got 20 on the freeway this weekend.

I'm thrilled !

After 4200 miles of 12 to 15 MPG in mixed city / highway driving, I decided my '05 6MT was ready for a serious road trip. I now have just over 5000 total miles on the car.

Voila ! First leg was LA to Bishop CA. 260 miles, one mountain crossing otherwise mostly level cruise at altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 feet, average speed 75 MPH. Fuel consumed: 12.2 gallons which equals 21.3 MPG.

Second leg was Bishop to Mammoth Mountain, back to Bishop, then to Las Vegas NV. 310 miles, altitudes up to 7,500 feet incluiding two mountain passes, twisties and heavy foot at speeds of 55 to 70 MPH first 150 miles then cruise into Vegas at 75 to 85 MPH. Fuel consumed: 17.3 gallons which equals 17.9 MPG.

Final leg was Vegas back to LA. 275 miles, two mountain crossings otherwise boring desert with some hills. Speed 73 MPH on cruise control, no stops other than agricultural check station outside Barstow. Fuel consumed: 12.6 gallons which equals 21.8 MPG.

I was burning 89 octane fuel which was $3.55/gal in Mammoth Lakes CA and $3.30/gal in Beatty NV, so this "great" fuel economy was a very pleasant surprise. Now we'll see how it does back here in So. Cal. traffic.

RX-8 also seemed to have more power than ever on the trip, even at the high altitudes.

Maybe she is broken in now.

perfect cruising speed for this car is 85-90mph. Anything slower than that you'll start to fall asleep. at those speeds it's 19-20mpg.

I hope I can get that kind of mileage on my road trip in 2 weeks. I am going to Va Beach about 750 miles round trip I would like to see 20 mpg.

you'll fill up about 3-4 times, depending on how heavy your foot is. I just came back from montreal and filled up that many times (850 miles round trip.) In between one fill-up I did triple digit cruising for most of the tank and drove 190 miles till i had 1/4 tank left. Kept my ass awake but not good for the wallet considering it takes 45 beans to fill up he tank these days.

I'd really like to know where some of you manly men are doing your 80+mph (or triple digit) cruising) to "stay awake" and still avoiding the Federales...

As for the mileage thing, I've not had enough fillups to get excited about mileage, but a 250mi round trip with a fair amount of around-town in the middle, totalling 280mi, netted 21mpg on a very green engine. I don't think 22mpg on an all-highway tank would be a stretch at the speeds I drive (72-75, depending upon what the speed limit is where I happen to be). In fact, I'm depending upon that kind of mileage to hold up tomorrow when I do a 700mi one-way trip to NY, keeping me in the two-fillup range on the trip.

80 MPH in the deserts of CA / NV / AZ will not get you ticketed if you stay alert. Posted speed limit at some locations in those states is 75, I believe.

Now "triple digit cruising" ? That's another story.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There ARE areas where the traffic flow well exceeds the posted limits, but reading that you will "fall asleep" while ripping along at 75 is a bit much. :)

I was cruising up the west side of FL about a year and a half ago on I-75 (I think) and felt like I was going to be driven off the road at my "usual" cruising speed.... So I ratcheted it up to keep pace with the right-lane traffic. The final setting was about 87-88, and I was definitely one of the slower drivers on that stretch on that day.

Running through OH, PA and NJ on I-80 at 80+, however, is a recipe for a meeting with a state trooper. The OH and PA troopers, especially, have a decades-long reputation of agressive revenue enhancement, ehhhh, enforcement.

i'm making a trip cross country (2500+ miles) in the 8 next week...i hope i can make a thread about good gas mileage. lol

Virginia State Troopers have that reputation too, though they'll usually give you a 10 mph leeway. I asked a state trooper once how he dealt with radar detectors (which are illegal in VA). He chuckled - he drives an unmarked car. He just pulls up casually behind a few speeding cars, flips on the radar, and watches for brake lights. :eek:

One of them VA troopers got me at 71mph just north of King's Dominion on I-95. Unfortunately that was in 1987, when the limit was still 55. :)
