is this good to buy for the RX8?

I was looking at getting a performance chip and so far this is cheap i can get it for 350 dollers i was wondering if there was a better programer then this one?

Hypertech Max Energy Sport, Hypertech Max Energy Sport Programmer

How often do you skim through the forum?

That stuff is a scam
You'll likely get flamed for asking such a question.

If it does give you some extra ponies it's likely dangerously leaning out the AFR's

RX8_Caleb 01-18-2013 09:12 AM

Dont buy

Don't buy it. Do a search about chips, they are not something rx8 owners should be looking at. Most of them are scams and they can fry your ecu.

Karack 01-18-2013 09:16 AM

why is everyone calling this a "chip"? it's an EEPROM. you're not chipping anything.

call it a programmer, and yes it's likely a waste of money. i used a hypertech chip years ago in my truck and didn't notice anything noticable from the new pogramming.

It says its likely to give you 500 more rpm rev

lol likely what does that mean.

It either sets the value in the ECU or doesn't

Why do you want 500 more rpm's anyway?

Deadly Crow 01-18-2013 11:17 AM

Why wouldnt I the more rpm the better it's a rotory

oh my word...:uh:

Jazzmeson 01-18-2013 11:45 AM

Do some searching about performance chips and ECUs. For $350, you're better off buying a used Cobb AccessPORT from a member here for around the same price.

Don't do it buy, get a SOHN adaptor, and save the rest for other mods.

monchie 01-19-2013 04:38 PM

Chip or programmer won't do much...or nothing at all. Just leave it stock, you will not regret it.

nycgps 01-20-2013 01:59 AM

that hypermax thing allows u to set ur fan temp. and it raise the rpm by a couple hundred, it also lean the upper afr for higher horsepower of which all programs does(some more some less, like timing, etc)

like karack said, it doesnt do all that much and for the price, it might be a better idea to get something else.

The only programmer I've seen discussed in this forum is the Cobb Access Port. As Jazzmeson suggests, you'd be better off getting a Cobb. There's a lot of experience here from people with that, and pointers to folks who know how to tune it. With the one you found you'd be on your own.

Entertaining how many people just saw "chip" and didn't bother following the link. :)

the clutch and power are already maxed at the factory RPM, setting it higher gains nothing except an exploding clutch disc and less power since you're beyond the peak.

pretty sure most people know what it does and know that all you can do with it is load premade maps from Hypertech which may or may not do much of anything at all or may be totally hosed up maps that could wind up taking the engine out. anyone that buys it is relying that the programmers who do the mapping at Hypertech know anything at all about tuning rotary engines.

the Cobb so far is still the best option, even though the whole marriage process is a nickel and dime affair.

Wolfe 01-20-2013 04:30 PM

get a cobb.
