getting a RX8 need alot of help

well this is my problem... im getting an rx8... a car that i know nothing about... a engine that i know nothing about... and i want it to be fast... PLEASE somebody help me... i have been researching as much as i can... but its not really getting me anywhere... so i thought maybe talking to people that know what they are talking about could help me...

Marklar 05-08-2010 02:42 PM

What, exactly, do you want to know about?

P_mac39 05-08-2010 02:54 PM

well what is best to start off with... i have never really messed with a rotary engine before... what do you think would be the best thing for me to start off with... exhaust? turbo? flywheel?

P_mac39 05-08-2010 03:03 PM

ok im gonna give everybody the goal that im going for... and lets see what we can do from there... i want this car to have at least a 12 second 1/4... how much will it cost and what do i need... because honestly i know nothing about how to make this car that fast

wcs 05-08-2010 03:05 PM

Its not going to be fast as long as you stay NA ....

P_mac39 05-08-2010 03:11 PM

Na?

Kaiser bun 05-08-2010 03:13 PM

wow... thats not even a rotary term lol, you should just pay a shop to do everything for you if you want the car to survive.

P_mac39 05-08-2010 03:17 PM

wow thanks for the encouragement... i love how i come looking for help... and all i get is ridicule... im trying to learn... i will pay a shop if i fail... but i want to try to do it first...

viprez586 05-08-2010 03:19 PM

If you know nothing about it leave it alone. The rotary needs a true professional (or at least a good tuner) to make it powerful.

Your going to have to spend a lot of money to get things done right and meet your goal. 300WHP is about where the renesis makes a good amount of power while still being reliable. Is it impossible to make more? No.

If you think you've done your research I think you need to sit down and read for another 4-5 months before you even come close to getting near FI (forced induction).

wcs 05-08-2010 03:29 PM

I gotta ask
Why are you getting an RX8 if one of your goals in a 12.25 sec quarter mile car?

Are you insane? Its sort of like buying a Taylor Made Driver to hit baseballs with ....

Only way you will even come close is via some FI method ... even with Nitrous which IMO is the simplest to setup you need to figure out how to retard the timing enough to get a big enough shot.

And the comment about being ridiculed and that you are just trying to learn ... well obviously you methods of learning are lazy ....

Go do some searching and reading, believe me its all out there ...

Its abundantly clear by your post that you have done no research and that you want everything dropped in your lap.
Well we ain't your Mommy and Daddy ... there will be no breast feeding you through this.

Honestly get another car ... really the RX8 is not a 12 second car ....

viprez586 05-08-2010 03:36 PM

Another little excerpt I left out that WCS touched on.

Mazda didn't design the RX-8 for straight line go fast, and never had no such intention.
It was designed for it's amazing cornering ability right out of the box.

Krazed_Rx8 05-08-2010 03:52 PM

+1 Get another car. If you did search youd know this isn't a car for you.

deadphoenix52 05-08-2010 03:53 PM

this is absolutely the wrong car for you

learycd 05-08-2010 07:15 PM

fail. buy a mustang

ok ... typical n00b first words.

i want this car to have at least a 12 second 1/4...
First Fail.

how much will it cost and what do i need...
If you have to ask, that simply means you will not be able to afford it.

because honestly i know nothing about how to make this car that fast
you mean because you don't know shit about cars.

ok, complete failure, move on.

we arent being mean man we are just being honest. If you did any research at all you would have found just about an infinite amount of threads on all the bolt ons for the 8 and how to go FI.... 12 seconds in the quarter... eh, id go with the rest and say get another car. Rx8 is an amazingly fun car to drive but its not that quick. You need to research before you post on forums because all of the info is out there... did you really think someone was going to sit down and calculate everything you can do to your car to make it fast and give you prices...? Did you go to school and ask your teachers for the answers to all the questions so you could sit back and do nothing...? think about it man

get another car

VashGS 05-09-2010 11:56 AM

Yea it's the wrong car for this goal. Even for a street car that's fast. Drop 60 grand on a Camaro or something. Getting killz in an Rx is Skillz and Wheelz.

Naturally Aspirated. Given that this was not clear I'm guessing you lack the mechanical and technical know how to pull of mods to get an 8 to 12 seconds.

I second the purchase of a different vehicle.

Look for the 2011 Mustangs - not 12 seconds (I don't think) but more powerful than previous models and usually people who don't know much or appreciate cars snag these vehicles.

Again not being mean...just realistic. I'm an Engineer but I don't go running around trying to Turbo and Nitro my 8 to make it a 12 second car.

F/I would take a ton of learning from anyone who has never done it and has no experience with it. (F/I is forced induction btw)

If you really want an 8 then start small. Start with a Cold Air Intake and maybe some hp enhancements through a new exhaust. Lighten the body with carbon fiber hood and other parts.

Once you start getting familiar with the car and understand the amount of work involved to complete the little things start planning bigger things like Turbo's etc.

Good luck in your endeavor. I look forward to seeing what you end up doing.

Cheers.

Untuned turbo Sky's pull low to mid 13's. I'm guessing those who have the factory Stage 3 tune with a new inter-cooler can get high 12's maybe mid 12's.

I'd drop the 3 grand to do it to my Sky if I really wanted to go any faster. Especially since it's backed by the warranty.

wcs 05-09-2010 02:49 PM

Really a Saturn Sky is that quick ....???
neat

Bigbacon 05-09-2010 02:57 PM

Why are you getting one if you know absolutely nothing about it??

For comparison:

One thing to note though is that the Sky has a smaller drag coefficient than the solstice so it's slightly quicker on the 1/4 and has a higher top speed.

Attachment 260797

EDIT:

Also the Auto is 0.3 seconds faster 0-60 than the manual tranny.

The GMPP Tune boosts hp by 30 and 65 ftlbs torque for the Auto vs. 90 for the Manual. This is a warranty backed tune that requires about $1.5 - 2k of parts and then who knows what for labor.

Figures above are the Stock version of the GXP though.

I keep seeing the 2011 mustang on commercials. Looks like a big improvement on previous models.

Still wouldn't buy one. Would get a Camaro over one.
