Getting Rid of RX8 Road noise

One thing that has annoyed me and passengers in my Ocho was the Road noise. I looked into several options for reducing road noise and have finally come up with a definitive yet simple and inexpensive solution to completely remove road noise from the RX8.

All that is required was a complete stereo upgrade, all cabin speakers were replaced with MB Quarts that can handle 150 rms. Next I added two Alpine 10" type R subwoofers, One Alpine pdx 1.1000 amp, one Alpine pdx 4.150 amp and lastly a Rockford Fosgate 3Sixyt.2 sound processor.

Now you may be wondering how a simple inexpensive upgrade like that could reduce road noise. Simple once every thing is installed just turn your volume up to lets says 20 and plays the song of your choice. At that volume I defy anyone to hear any road noise or even carry on a conversation, it just can’t be done. Now if you like to drive with your windows down and wind noise is an issue just turn the volume to around 30 and like magic you can’t even hear the wind.

I hope if any of you are experiencing road you can use this cheap simple solution to eliminate it :blue:

nice solution. Just wait till your bass starts making things rattle, you're gonna love it! ;)

ac3mastuh 09-14-2007 11:22 AM

lol, nice solution!

reaper1 09-14-2007 11:25 AM

How in hell was that cheap.

Rems31 09-14-2007 11:30 AM

so you can't hear anything outside at all like sirens?

reaper1 09-14-2007 11:39 AM

What sirens ?

secret8gent 09-14-2007 11:40 AM

changing your tires makes a significant difference if you care about that kind of thing.

tajabaho1 09-14-2007 11:49 AM

for real, how the hell is that inexpensive, btw, I'm not adding shitty weight to my car till it gets 400whp

Jedi54 09-14-2007 11:57 AM

you calling my stereo "shitty weight"?! ;)

kimota 09-14-2007 12:12 PM

Hey inexpensive .......... expensive its all relative, kinda like rough sex, date rape or being raped in a prison shower or vice versa its all a matter of perspective.

Ya this solution works great for sirens, every time a police officer has pulled me over I never once heard his siren.

If your concerned about weight just don't ride with fat chicks and get rid of some non essentials A/C compressor, airbags and such, ohh maybe pop the ash tray out while your at it.

tajabaho1 09-14-2007 01:00 PM

^ first of all, I don't have a clue what you are rambling about

jedi, unless it can shake the ground across the intersection, I will not put it in my car

ken-x8 09-14-2007 02:00 PM

Play it loud enough often enough, and eventually you won't hear the road noise even with the stereo off. :)

StewC625 09-14-2007 02:01 PM

LOL - well that's one way.

The tires are at fault here of course ... new tires = less road noise.

+1

I got me some Hankook autocross tires, and I don't get what you mean by "road noise". I drive with the window slightly open, and no stereo.

If you mean the symphony that comes out of Rena's rear end, I can hardly call that "noise".

kpex76 09-16-2007 08:16 PM

what road noise are you guys talking about?
Rx8's are extremely quite.

Now evos....they are a different story, you will hear much much more road noise.
They make all kinds of different noises...I used to own one.

Define 'extremely quiet?"

Rhythmic 09-17-2007 07:58 AM

Better tires, Dynamat=two best options.

I've never had any issue with road noise, ever.

Compared to my evo, the car is very quiet under 5k rpm.
Once you get past 5k rpm the engine obviously gets louder but no where near the
evo.

Also, the tire noise is so loud on the evo it's unbearable sometimes...you'll notice this more once your tires starts wear more.
BTW, there is a lot less sound-deadning materials on the evo.

Dynamat is the best solution. Do the entire interior, door panels, trunk, and firewall, and you should be great.

c41250n 09-19-2007 03:56 AM

sounds like a plan!

Socket7 09-19-2007 02:17 PM

The best part of this solution is that after a few years of it, you wont be able to hear anything at all! You'll never need to worry about road noise again!:lol2:

kimota 09-19-2007 02:53 PM

True dat, double true :)

G Man 09-19-2007 04:33 PM

Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

Razz1 09-19-2007 04:36 PM

Don't lower the car.

Get Dyno mat and do the doors.

No more road noise.
