Generic battery replacement?
The 5 year old OEM Mazda battery finally died this winter. Knowing it was going, I didn't have a battery tender plugged in for it during this year's hibernation.
The label on the battery is long gone and I have no idea what the cold cranking amp is for the OEM battery. With that said, I have no problem getting a generic battery from a parts store since the OEM Battery's CCA worked fine for me. Can anyone enlighten me on the OEM's CCA and recommend a fitting budget battery? Yes I did search, and nothing but premium Optimas and Odysseys surfaced. I can't justify spending more for something I wouldn't need. |
When I needed a new battery I walked into Autozone and they told me what kind of batteries I could get. Then I went to sears and got one of theirs because it was cheaper. Eventually that one died and I got a Yellowtop, I forget now what the CCA on that OEM replacement battery was.

Go advance auto web site, get their autocraft gold battery, throw the coupon in there, there is a coupon of 35 off 85 i cant remeber the code. Then just select pick it up in store. U should be able to get a battery that has 3 yr replacement warranty for under 70 bux
Stock calls for a 550 cca |
found the code. RAF7JA1102
35 off 85 |
btw, Yellow top (don't get RedTop, it sucks MAJOR DO DO!) saved me couple of times, it really has a lot more RC than Redtop. even tho the battery saids it just like 92 compare to 100. the Yellowtop does last longer.
does it worth the price? well I got it for 150 bux and it has 3 yr warranty, and I used the warranty ONCE already(long store short ... rather not say anything LOL) can't complain too much, right? :) speaking of the warranty, the dude at the shop told me "we just gonna charge it back up and it's going to be fine just like new" me : err, but the battery has 1.5v, that's already DEAD. like DEAD DEAD, I think it's a defect. Shop : no, it will work just like new. come back in 30 minutes me thinking : sure man, it won't hold shit charge anymore me said : ok, I will go have lunch and be back in about an hour. an hour later Me : Sup man, got the battery charged ? (I know it will still be dead) Shop guy : yep, it was just finished charging *checks the battery. 3.1v ...* Shop guy : mmmmmm, thats strange, well I guess it's dead, I get u another one. me thinks : no shit it's dead, anything lower than 10. something is already dead me said : yep, thx. |
Hmm... Will the code RAF7JA1102 work for in store purchases?
On Advance's website, they only list two "group 35" batteries that fit the RX-8. IDK if this link works: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...51_10051_-1___ AutoCraft Gold Battery, Group Size 35, 640 CCA - $120.99 Optima Batteries RedTop® Starting Battery - $185.99 |

Yes both will work. They also have an Autocraft Silver Battery, which is cheaper but CCA is only 500, don't think u will want that. buy it online, punch in the code, select pick up at the closest store, go pick it up tomorrow and tell them to install it for you (if you don't want to get your hands dirty) so you can return the core back for refund right away. |
Just go to Pep Boys and get the Bosch battery for $90. Consumer Reports gave it their highest rating.
