Gas overflow problem

Everytime I fill up with gas I have to be super carefull otherwise in spills out. I have tried different stations, setting it to the slowest setting and holding it by hand. I have to slow way down when I think it is getting close and use a start stop technique. I know that spillage overtime will eat at the finish. Does andbody have the same problem?

Endor 02-22-2007 11:52 AM

Nope, just had it happen a little bit once. That was my fault cause I kept trying to 'top it off'.

Rhawb 02-22-2007 11:54 AM

Yeah, happened to me the first time I filled it, but then I learned to not top the thing off. Haven't had a problem since.

If you're not topping the car off and it's still doing that, it needs to be fixed.

Mazmart 02-22-2007 11:55 AM

I was just going to ask whether you had ever tried topping it off, because that's not good in that it can damage your evap system.

Paul.

I actually just bought an '06 Galaxy Grey. I've only filled up twice and both times it overflowed. I don't top off because I don't have the time to try to squirt an extra nickel's worth in. It fills up to the top and stops like it's supposed to, but then it overflows. I was going to give it one more time then talk to the Dealership. I actually tried to fill up today, but the station attendant was completely ignorant; long story. So I haven't had a chance to give it the "one more time" yet. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

steelrain198 02-22-2007 12:23 PM

Had the same problem on my 07 1st 2 fill ups. There was a recall on the fuel filler cap that they swapped while I was in at the dealer 1st time and hasn't done it since. Not sure if they fixed something else when they replaced the filler cap but not a problem now.

I have a gas overflow problem whenever I eat too many onion rings.

zoom44 02-22-2007 12:47 PM

check to see if your car is in the vin range for the MSP13 fuel filler cap

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ighlight=msp13

but i dont see why a poor seal would cause consistent repetitive overflow

DarkBrew 02-22-2007 12:54 PM

I had overflow one time because the pump didn't shut off when the gas was full.

The sound changes as the top of the tank fills up so just listen for it and ease up.

BunnyGirl 02-22-2007 01:18 PM

I've never had it happen when getting it filled up (almost exclusively by the attendant since we can't pump our own gas in Oregon) and have never had it happen the dozen times or so I have filled it up myself (in Washington). I don't try topping it off, though, either. :dunno:

Not topping off

It spills out even if I have it on the slowest setting. The first time it clicks off. No topping.....I will check the VIN to see if it in the range. It is an 06 that was bought in October 2006. I would have thought it would have been fixed. Thanks for all the help.

I purchased my 06 in late November and about a month later the CEL came on. Took it in and the dealer found that it was the the gas cap based on the code. The Mazda bulletin came out around the middle of December is what I was told.

Never had an overflow problem though.

Jim

My 06 does it EVERY TIME at the 76 station in town, but no where else. Some one else started a thread like this a while ago . . . seems there us nothing you can do about it. I just grab a couple paper towels, and slip them under the filler to catch any overflow.

zoned 02-22-2007 03:06 PM

listen to dark brew. there is a definite change in sound as it nears the top.

jp4wd 02-22-2007 03:11 PM

Hasnt happened to me yet. most of the time the pump should automatically shut off so no need to keep an eye or hold it. although i have been to a few stations mostly in the small towns where there is no lock and you have to hold the pump. You should hear a different sound when its near the topping point.

I notice this problem too......seems to overflow when i'm doing a full fill up. I thought it was the fuel nozzle that was broken, doesn't matter where i go to fill up, always have a pool of fuel on the paint. Really annoying, have to start carrying some towels to prevent the fuel from spilling over. :squint:

cant pump your own gas in oregon? wtf. thats probably the stupidest thing ive ever heard lol

CarAndDriver 02-22-2007 10:39 PM

Use the fast fill setting till you think it is getting close to topping and then do it by hand or use the slowest setting on the pump. Haven't had spills since then. Don't do a lot of additional topping--this tank is very sensitive to that. It is a pain.

I was in New Jersey this summer and it was the same thing there! Oh wait, or was that when I drove into New York....hmmm... oh welll, same difference. :D:

Chakara 02-22-2007 11:03 PM

There is another thread on this that I was going to post on once my fix was done.

I have the same problem on my 06. The overflow is almost like a burp, even when I am filling slowly.

The dealer has had the car for the last 3 days as they change the fuel tank. I'll post more when I get it back tomorrow.

bruce_van 02-22-2007 11:10 PM

I have the overflow problem in my '06 also. Quite a pain in the rear when it drips down the side.

OnRails 02-22-2007 11:13 PM

I've had several cars that did this actually. Most recently a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Hasn't happened to me in the 8 yet though. When it cuts off though IT IS FULL. I can't try to top it off. I think it has something to do with how the fuel pump senses that the tank is full. It can't know until the gas gets up to the nozzle and then it can't shut off fast enough or something like that maybe?

Krankor 02-23-2007 12:56 AM

Me, I just wish mdw1000 would stop eating onion rings.

CarAndDriver 02-23-2007 01:19 AM

It makes it harder to get to an even number for the total amount too.

Chakara 03-04-2007 12:00 AM

Replacing the tank solved the issue for me - under warranty of course.

They said something about a one way valve that was too stiff......
