Gas odor inside cabin and also garage after fillups
 

What would cause there to be an immediate strong gas odor in the cabin even with the windows down or up? Gives my wife a headache without me rubbing her thigh.

Then when I put it in the garage after driving about 2 miles I have to leave the garage door open for a few hours until it finally goes away. Outside temp doesn't seem to matter.

I know you're going to say:

1. Do a search = I did twice.

2. How do you keep it full of gas for 2 miles? = very difficult short shifting.

3. Did you buy premium or cheap crap? = 93 Octane Shell

4. They all do that. = Don't ever fill it up.

Any "real" reasons for this happening every time when I fill up and let the shut off on the pump actually determine the "full" mark. Please save me a trip to the dealer with my 2004 6speed with 68k and a new motor at 55k. Gads so much is new now.

Check your fuel pump. Sounds like it is failing.

Pull up the drivers side rear seat and inspect the area.

Mine overflows if I let the handle shut the pump off. This could be related to an early recall on fuel tanks where the one-way valve that prevents spillage after a rollover doesn't open all the way when filling. Also, if you're full to the tippy top with ground temp gas, and the garage is warmer, it can expand a bit and stink. Solution? I don't fill then park it right away.

Another thing to check after a engine install, is the connectors to the fuel rail. Reports of fires from reusing the fittings are not uncommon.

We are part way there. Underneath the two back seats are a access panels that give you access to the fuel pump assembly (drivers side) and the siphon assembly (passenger side) that are in the gas tank. See if you have any signs of fuel there. One of the rings that hold down the assemblies could be loose or the gasket is missing/bad.

I agree with alnielsen and ZOOM-I-DO, pull the back seat, remove the inspection covers and see what is up.

Took out seats and opened covers as suggested. Surprised how easy that is to do.

Then took to gas station and filled up while watching.

Immediately after the gas pump shut off the gas started running out under the plastic cover on the driver's side bigtime flooded the top of the tank.

Will be replacing all the gaskets, seals, etc that come with the kit via Mazda.

Surprised in a way that it held pressure and didn't throw a code???

Anyhow you were right on where the leak was.
