Gas mileage bad

Well I'm getting like 12.6 MPG according to my math.

My communte is like 5-10 minutes with about 5 traffic lights in between. I typically get up to 30MPH. I don't know.

It has a K&N drop in filter, AP Midpipe, and RB exhaust.

Makes sense, the car barely has time to warm up. How is it on longer trips?

yapakanichi 09-18-2015 07:25 AM

I don't know how longer trips are. I let it warm up everytime I start to almost operating temp.

Good for the car, but terrible for the fuel economy. Especially when the trip is short. Your average speed is probably 10-15 MPH which is also bad for MPG. Given your description of your commute, your MPG is just fine. You should consider walking or bicycling with a commute that short.

Nah, not with my job. I gotta go to the troop, do PT, go home, SSS, Go back to work, Go home for lunch, go back to work, then leave for the day. I don't want to walk that

To add to what others have said...
There are hundreds of threads on gas mileage. Theres a topic on it in the new and potential owners sticky. If your mileage is abnormal (from YOUR normal driving habits), then there are ways to troubleshoot and remidy the issue (such as ignition/ exhaust health, etc).

I know you believe your issue to be different, but it's actually a common topic that has been answered in detail (short commutes, etc).

This is for others who may stumble across this thread...

Then suck it up, gas is cheap. :D:

Or go get a PHEV or EV. Your short back and forth twice a day commute is perfect for either.

I was just curious if this is normal. Just confirming my suspicions.

With all that idling, make sure you take the car out for a beating once in a while. Keep the carbon from building up.

Echoing what others have said, none of this sounds abnormal. Depending on age of your car/how long you've owned it, you might find some improvements in ignition replacement alone. But definitely also give yourself a few extra minutes to let the car warm up and get a few good revs in.

Need to replace that filter too, several threads about KN drop in filters

sure you do. we use miles per gallon to measure fuel economy. the engine uses fuel when its running, and then we divide by the number of miles. if you let the engine run when you are not moving, the miles are 0, so you get 0 miles per gallon.

in your example, you're only going about 5 miles a day, but letting the engine warm up, its probably running for an hour total.

its why freeway mileage is better, there are many more miles.
