gas cap loose?
 

I just got my 8 and the gas cap seems to be loose. I thought that it would be tight after a couple clicks, but it is still loose. Is this normal or mine got a problem?

Not sure what you mean by "loose". It should hold a tight seal otherwise you're going to get CEL code.

It has a ratcheting mechanism so it won't ever be "tight" and stop turning, it will just click. The handle on the cap can turn back and forth a little but the plug inside is actually tight. When you put it on just tighten it up until it clicks 4 times or so and it should be sealed properly.

Of course, I can't see/hear/touch your gas cap from here so it's possible yours is actually loose in which case you would get the check engine light coming on.

Thanks. I thought it should not move at all after a few clicks, but it was moving back and forth a little, so I was wondering. I never got CEL on, so I guess I am ok.

If the pressurized fuel tank had a leak, you'd definitely know with a CEL blinking in your face before you get a block away from the gas pump. :)

This just happened to me today. I bought gas, and put on the gas cap with 2 or 3 clicks as I recall. I got back on the highway and had the CEL come on. When work was over, I started the car and the CEL was still there, and I also got 5 beeps and a TPMS warning light. The TPMS light went away after I drove for a while, so I guess it was because the tires were cold. Were the beeps related to the TPMS?

Should I just try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, or am I violating my warranty by not taking the car in? I have read that the code is still stored in NVRAM even if the CEL is cleared. So if it's not related to the gas cap, am I being negligent by just clearing the CEL?

I'd swing by the dealer. They can print out an RO(repair order) for historical reference and clear the code in the service drive.

You should probably put a couple more pounds of air in your tires - the beeping is the TPMS and running around with tires not properly inflated can wear them badly and be a hazard. Pressure should be checked when the tires are cold, shoot for around 230kPa (the compressor that comes with the car is metric, 230kPa is ~33psi..)

The CEL is most likely the gas cap, I give mine a good 5 clicks or so to make sure it's nice and tight. I think the CEL will clear on its own after 4 or 5 starts. If it were me, I'd nuke the codes by disconnecting the battery and make sure the gas cap was on nice and snug. (You'll need to reset the DSC/steering sensor, procedure is in the manual if you do). Your choice though- taking it to the dealer may make you sleep better.

Use the CEL light as an excuse to get your ecu/pcm reflashed. See if it supposedly improves gas mileage. :)

I've been getting decent mileage. I'm afraid it might have the opposite effect :)

BTW, I cleared the code and took her for a hard drive to 'relearn'. I figured since it happened right after a fill-up, it was probably the gas cap - anything bad would reappear. No sign of CEL anymore.
