Full Body Respray
 

Has anyone ever had their RX8 resprayed, i have a few scratches on mine and im just curious how much, if anyone knows does it roughly cost.
Or if anyone has had it done?

I've seen some *complete repaint* for as low as 299.99

but I wouldnt go for that.

if you have just a few scratch just get the particular panel resprayed. A professional job for the full body will cost mucho $$$. That includes painting the door jams, inside the trunk, under the carpets, the engine bay, etc.

yeah i dont think i would pay for as little as that nycgps, you get what you pay for, ive always believed.

@chickenwafer, well my trunk is scratched, both doors, the front bumper had been resprayed and is not peeling off. The right side over the wheel has a chip, and i was thinking for what it would cost to get all that resprayed i was curious how much it would cost to respray the whole thing.

I just get jealous when i see other ppls rx8's on here and they look so immaculate. Its annoying because a shopping cart hit my one door and chipped it and someone hit their door into my other door and chipped it, the front bumper is peeling off because the previous owner didnt get it repsrayed right and the trunk has a chip from where the spoiler used to be.

yeah, someone clipped my car in a parking lot. i still have to goto the autobody shop and get it fixed. dont have the time.

If you stay with the original color, its not too expensive - probably around $3200 depending on how much prep you do yourself ahead of time.

If you change colors, you are looking at a lot more, as CW noted.

Well some of the dings may be easily fixed by going to the paintless dent repair companies. For the scratches and chips ( if they are smaller) you may want to consider touching it up and using the Langka products at www.langka.com to smooth them out. A bit of time and effort on your part could save a lot of cash. Probably the only thing to do with the front end is a proper respray with blending up the hood.

Chickenwafer, what's the process to get a panel resprayed? Do I have to find the paint for a shop, or is this something they have?

I just found out yesterday that someone gave me a 3 inch long sratch over my right wheel and it goes down to the metal. I'm pretty pissed and has been on my mind since then. It's a good thing this thread came along.

A couple of years ago a friend got some quotes to repaint a Mercedes he had inherited. Prices were in the $3000 range.

Tip for scratches:
1. Wide scratches or chips or anything that goes to the primer - Use touch up paint and Langka. Unfortunately, touch up paint for our RX-8 with lighter colors don't work too well.

2. Thin scratches that are medium to shallow - Use Quixx scratch repair kit. This is the best chemical-based polisher and paint deformer that I've tried.

3. Any shallow/light scratch - Use a polishing compound and a random orbit polisher.

4. Any scratch - Put a decal over it (lazy way).

Tips for Dents:
1. Blunt dents - Use PDR
2. Creased dents or dents w/ damaged paint - Go to a body shop

To repaint the whole car, I believe you do have to spend some $$$. I've heard many stories of people doing it on the cheap, and inevitably there are problems. Maybe the paint isn't smooth, the color's off, or even if everything looks okay, within a year there's chipping, peeling, etc.

Now I know dropping, say, $4,000 for a new paint job is a lot of money. But… if you love your car but hate the way it looks, to the point where you start thinking about replacing it with another, maybe it's not so much money. If it were me, and the car was beautifully repainted, in my mind I'd feel like I have a perfect, brand new car… for a mere $4,000. (Instead of spending much, much more on a new car.) But hey, that's just me.

good Paint cost alot, but good *labor* cost even more. if I have to repaint my car (maybe a couple of years later, not now), I will follow other member's advise, call some Ferrari dealership up. and ask them where do they paint their cars.

this is a really good point, i have only had my rx8 since january and all the problems on the body are from someone else, i could afford about 4000 to be honest. Its just finding a decent place to do a decent job

There's lots of ways to find a really good body shop. First thing I do is, ask around. Find out where guys go for custom paint jobs. Or where people with a classic '57 Chevy or a Dusenberg take their baby for body work. I'd imagine LV—home of SEMA—has some superb shops. Go to a local classic car show one weekend and when you see an awesome paint job, ask the owner who did it.

Also, go to the regional thread in this forum—and other high-end car forums (Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Lamborghini, etc.)—and search "body shop" and "Vegas".

Finally, call—or visit—some of the fancy car dealerships in town. Drop by the Bentley dealer and ask the Service Manager where he sends cars for body work. Places they use are usually a good bet.

maaco charged me about $1000 to repaint my chrysler lebaron the original color. and man did it look beautiful. it was gorgeous. it went from fading and spotted herpes colors to beautiful brilliant and vivacious cherry red. i nearly came in my pants when i saw it. i said, "this.. this beautiful car.. is mine?"

And how did it look 8 months later?

and how long ago did they charge that amount of money for it?

Well my local Macco has this *special* deal something like Ultimate whatever repaint the whole car for 1499.

Just saw it today. not sure about their quality tho.

That's the first time I ever heard anyone call a Le Baron beautiful.

I just had mine sprayed...stayed silver (not the oem stock silver) so I did not have to redo the interior jambs or enginebay. My paint man owed me a couple hundred bucks already and I got this done for a grand, including painting and mounting the wing and ground effects.

Normally this type of work goes for $1800-2500 at standard body shops.

You pay for the prep.

Really really good shops blast the car back to bare metal ... then prime & paint.

Cheaper shops just prime & paint.

Ask wherever you take it about their prep. ... and look at some cars that are fresh from the spay booth ... check for runs in the paint. and over-built up paint

No one blasts a modern car back to metal.
Newer cars have an integral zinc "primer" layer that wouldn't survive a plastic media abrasion and you would be giving up corrosion protection.
A high-end paint job would be sanded down to the color coat (or, at least, deeply into the clear) and then "surfaced".

Really, the difference between a cheap paint job and an expensive one is the prep.
Everything else is the same.

Runs, sags and over-build happen. The question is whether or not they will correct the defect or try to cover it up.

I had my camry repainted at one of those bargain shops and it turned out decent for the money. I think I paid 800 or so w/o doing the jams and such, but as other people say for a great paint job be prepared to spend 4K-5K or more.
