fog lights won't turn on! help!!
 

so i just bought my 2004 rx8 a couple of days ago and i love it!! unfortunately the fog lights don't work!:dunno:
i know the low beams have to be on in order for them to cut on but i tryed everything!!.
i checked the fuses and the (R.FOG) fuse isn't there.. i replaced it with another light fuse to check if it would work and nothing! helppp!!:icon5::icon5::SHOCKED:

the bulbs could be out. or a problem with the actual wires. if you are SURE it's not the fuse, i'd try to eye-inspect the wires and look for a cut or something.

i guess replacing bulbs first would be cheaper then getting all new wiring, so maybe start there.

The "R FOG" is not required for your fog lights.
You need to inspect the 15A FOG fuse (which is under where the R FOG is listed).
If the fuse is good, inspect/swap the FOG relay.

And just to be sure... you did verify the fog switch wasn't in the 'OFF' position, right?

R FOG = Rear Fog

got it!! the wires werent even connected to the fogs! what a dumb previous owner.

Sounds like SOMEBODY didn't check the fogs after taking the bumper off for some reason, never plugged them back in, and didn't ever notice! :eek:

Probably when they installed the front lip.

Thread res!!! Mine dont work suddenly either... they used to work and I checked all the fuses... Where is the Fog relay? Im not familiar with where it is located...

My foglights stopped working. I checked all my fuses under the hood in the fusebox and replaced the Fog light fuse with another and it still didnt work. I then check the fuses by my feet and realized I didnt need to.

If the fuse and relay is OK... did you check the fog switch to make sure you didn't just turn it off?
Nothing much else in the circuit dude...

Except for a possible broken fog light switch. Also did you do the fog light rewire? If you did, has the wiring come loose from that connection?

Broken Switch?
Broken Relay?
Loose connection?
Shorted out bulbs?

I will go over all of these and get a good view of the wires in the daylight... Thanks all

Once you verify the fog light switch is in fact turned on, you need to actually narrow down where the problem is instead of "looking around at the wires" because that is a ridiculous way to troubleshoot.
Grab a meter and start narrowing it down.
Pull the fuse and verify you're getting voltage there.
Then pull the relay and verify you're getting voltage on the supply side, then with the lights on verify you're getting voltage on the "trigger" side (voltage from the switch).
Once you know what does/doesn't have voltage, then you know where to focus.

Long awaited update. Havent check the voltage or if im even getting any at the fuse but I have checked the relays and the fuse wasnt blown so, ill update this again once I find a Meter... I lost it somewhere...

Should be easy to find one. If you cant find a volt meter try a test light. A test light will tell you if the relay is working.

Okay so I didnt have a test light but I used a volt meter and assuming I used it right, I am not getting power. This makes sense to me because my relay was fine along with my fuse, which I replaced anyway to see if it changed anything.

Where do I even start now, wires are tough to me and are a weakness (It took me forever to install my footwells lol). So, where do I start?

I just want to be absolutely sure... you did verify the fog light switch was turned on... right?
I know I mentioned this before but you never told me if it was verified.
The switch is what energizes the relay... so everything will appear good but you'll get no voltage to the fog lights.

If not that then you need to use the voltmeter to test the relay socket and see if you are getting voltage to the fog relay from the fuse, then see if you're getting voltage from the headlight relay to the fog relay.
The electrical diagram I attached above will show you what side of the socket to test for each.
This will help greatly to narrow down where you go from there.

I still think its his relay, because I am pretty sure its not the ground.

Going off of a previous post I thought he replaced it.... but reading it again maybe he just replaced the fuse:

Okay so it was all a big cluster fuck but basically both of my fogs just went out, but there was a series of events that led me to assume otherwise.

Since I didn't know WTF I was doing I headed to my buddies house (LordET) who is an electrical engineer and we had to trouble shoot for like 3 hours.

So here it goes: Fogs went out so we tested the fuse and it was fine, not blown and we were getting power while flipping the fog light switch, we did the same test to the relay, we still got power so we decided to pull the front bumper and check out all the connectors to see if they were getting power. We tested my fogs to make sure they were out and seemingly one of them was but the other was fine but wouldn't light up, this is probably what caused this whole thing to take so long because the fog light bulb that seemed to look like it should work didn't. So the connectors were getting power and we pondered WTF was happening. We swapped relays with my buddy and mine worked on his but his didn't on mine. So we scratched put heads again, he tested some shit I dont remember because he is a engineer and we trouble shooted. After we wondered why the relay would work on his but not mine we checked the fuse and it has blown.

JESUS lol all of that work for just my fogs being out. Whew. But he tossed me his old ones and that's what I'm using now so.... Yeah...

Haha no it wasnt him, it was really weird and I shouldnt have put his name out there because now y'all are going to think he doesn't know WTF he's doing but it was very strange. But we figured it out. There was alot more to what he did that I cant go into detail about because idk WTF he did but he got it working. Oh and I got a foglight rewire while we looked at it lol.
