Flushing Brake Fluid w/Pad Change Soon: What's Best DD Brake Fluid?
Okay, brake wizards.
I'm putting on Akebono pads all 4 corners in the next week or so now that weather has warmed up and was wondering what DOT 3/4 Brake Fluid is best for my daily driver 8 (not tracked or driven SUPER hard typically). I those Akebono ProACT pads because they're low dusting, seem to get rave reviews over on the Bimmer & Audi forums (where owners can be picky), and I don't need the capabilities of Hawk or equivalents. Also, Akebono makes factory installed pads for many manufacturers, including Mazda AFAIK. Thanks. |
For a daily driver, you do not need anything more than standard DOT 3 fluid. Any reputable brand from the local auto parts store will suffice. Prestone is inexpensive and comes in large bottles. It is what I used in my son's and wife's cars last time I flushed them.
Here is a good article on brake fluid that includes a chart listing many different options and their specs and prices. I run ATE Typ 200 DOT 4 in mine, but I track it 10 to 12 times per year. |

My understanding is DOT 3 has boiling point of approx 284 degrees Fahrenheit while DOT is 311 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm probably going to use Valvoline or Prestone. The only other thing I've discovered is a white paper posted on BITOG that claims DOT 4 has boronic additives that can cause seals to swell as much as 16% more than DOT 3 brake fluid. |
walmart supertech dot 3, nuff said. its like comparing different bottle waters, i mean really. h20 can vary soo much..
you're paying for personal gratification, nothing more. |
For daily driving, just get the cheapest DOT 3 fluid you can buy.
