First oil change at dealer. What a bunch of tools!
 

I took my 8 to the dealer I got it from for my first oil change. I told them to use Castrol GTX. The SUPERVISOR came over and told me we can't put synthetic in your car. Am i missing something here... I thought GTX was standard oil. So they put in Motorcraft instead. Guess I need to find a new oil change place.:banghead:

Retards.. The freakin supervisor works with oil all day and probably has been for a while and doesn't even know GTX is non-synthetic. Did you try telling him that the castrol GTX was non synthetic?

Yep. I even showed him the quart that I keep in my trunk. Not only that when I got home and let it sit for 10 minutes... I had to add 1/2 quart to top it off.

I know the manual calls for dino oil, but I have read a lot saying Royal Purple is totally safe in the rotor motor. I know in the end it's the choice of the owner. At least Royal Purple seems to be the only safe synthetic.

did you bring oil to the dealership and say "put this in" ? if not, do they keep GTX on hand for changes?

I actually had an online coupon from the dealer for a Castrol GTX oil change. He said they only use Motorcraft (They are also a Ford dealer). When I showed him the bottle HE looked at me like I was stupid.

They're probably putting GTX in other customers cars, telling them it's synthetic, and charging synthetic prices. The supervisor must be familar with their price list and not much else.

dealers dont have all the oil...

Still better than them overfilling the engine (which they usually do because they don't bother to check while filling it up).

another reason to bring your own oil so you know how much they put in by looking at whats left in the jug.

I buy my own oil and have it change at Jiffy lube. I only pay for the oil filter and labor.

The main manager called me later to apologize and that everyone is being re-trained on oils and rotary's (what ever that means). Castrol GTX is supposed to be available due to the partnership between Castrol and Mazda. I will bring my own oil next time and I learned a valuable lesson. I would like to thank everyone here on this forum. They were shocked at my knowledge of the car and that is in large part due to the collective knowledge and experience gathered here.

What am I missing here? What is the outrage? OK, the supervisor wasn't knowledgeable about all the different brands of motor oil. Motorcraft is a quality oil. I would think, if you wanted a specific brand of oil used, you would supply it. You would do that with other auto parts.

ha this reminds me of when i got my first oil change after i had to replace my engine.. i took it in for its first change and about a week after i open the air intake box and find the sob full of oil! i go to the dealership and start bitching about it and a tech walks up to me and says "i did your oil change and i did not over fill it" THEN HOW THE HELL IS THERE OIL IN MY INTAKE?! "i dont know why?" morons at dealerships.. but if you want something done right do it yourself but keep the receipt because your ass will go through hell if you need to get a new engine..

I would suggest doing your own oil changes, but I understand how much of a hassle it is for us S2 guys compared to the S1 guys. Even though I use a Pela extractor to change my oil, we still need to get underneath, undo the sump guard, and fish for the filter. If you have the drive to perform the changes yourself, I say go for it. Not only are you ensuring that you are putting the right product in your car, and the right amount, but also gives you a fantastic sense of accomplishment if it is the one and only thing you do hands-on to your car.

That's what I thought. I mean, it would be a different issue if they put the wrong oil - like wrong grade, etc.

Also, I believe not all dealers allow you to bring your own parts. Maybe that's just the case in my area:cussing:

AFAIK I thought mazda dealerships stocked mazda oil... which is Castrol GTX rebranded with the zoom zoom logo ... the manager alluded to this regarding said partnership.

Service Writers (and managers) aren't mechanics... They are sales people. Rarely do they have any mechanical background at all. So, it's hardly surprising that they would make said oversight. And it's really not a big deal.

I was a mechanic, and tried to transition to service writer... But I was absolutely horrible at it. I just couldn't lie and sell all the crap that they peddle to customers.

Me: Hello customer. You're at 60,000 miles and we recommend a power steering fluid flush at that mileage.
Customer: I see. Is that really necessary? What will happen if we don't do that service right now?
Me: Umm... Nothing. It's crap. You don't need it.
Low sales, manager says I suck at sales, I go back to fixing cars. ;-)

threads like this make me glad i perform all of my own maintenance and repairs. i do not let anyone work on my car.. you have to be picky if you want the job done right.
