First oil change at 3 thousand miles or 5 thousand miles?

Im at 3150 and thought it was due so I called a local dealer and he said its not due till 5000 miles. Dunno why I thought it was 3 all this time...

Take a look in your owners manual, there are two schedules for maintenance at 5K or 7.5K miles..

RX8by 12-05-2003 05:30 AM

My dealer called last night wanting to know if I was ready for my 3,000 mile oil change. I hope they incude it under the free Maint. plan. I am going to take it in at 3,000. I have 2500 on her now.

pyrospawn 12-05-2003 07:53 AM

I paid for the 3k oil change myself and had the dealer did the free service at 5k

RX-GR8 12-05-2003 08:47 AM

isnt it months or miles whichever comes first?

RX-MEN-8 12-05-2003 09:10 AM

I did my first one at 2500K. This one was a "freebie" offered by the dealer (Gunther Mazda) as a courtesy to buyers. I took it in at that milege for the breakin change. I will take it at 5K for the Mazda freebie. I think this will be good for the engine. New oil at breakin - and new oil at 5K. best of both worlds.

i did my first at 1000 miles and i am doing my next at 3000

On schedule 2, the owner has the option of 5000 mile or four month intervals, whichever comes first. So if you are puting miles conservatively on your car, you can go in every 4 months. For some people I imagine that could be 3000 miles. I went in at 4 months and had 4500 miles.

thats what i thought. 4 months for me will be January. i have 2100 miles on it so by then i will have around 3000.

Jhouse 12-05-2003 11:57 AM

well i only pay 10 bucks to change mine for the life of the car so i think i will just change it everyother month.

I just had my 4 month checkup (with oil change) done yesterday @ 3,124 miles. I was just in the last 2 weeks or so getting the false oil light problem. That was timely, so I had the new oil pan installed too.

The process was totally painless. I still don't have my free maintenance card yet, but it's not neccessary. The car checked-out otherwise in perfect condition, in every way. This is the first time that a new car of mine got this far without a freakin list of squaks. I'm completely satisfied with it!

Total cost of the visit to the car doctor....$0.00

:D

I had a freebie from the dealer, so I took it in at 1500. They said they'd do it but recommend not to, since there was "break-in" oil that oughta run for at least 3000 miles. then, I got the free maintenance deal and ended up waiting till 5000 at the scheduled change. 650 is too early.

I did my own oil & filter change at 2,500 miles. The dealer did the 5,000 mile one for free. This weekend I'm giving her the 7,500 mile change from my own garage.

My intent is to stay with 2,500 mile changes, and let the dealership do every other oil change.

I ordered my RX8 yesterday and took a loaner (not an RX8) to drive till Monday when my Titanium/Chaparral arrives. So far my dealer hasn't mentioned anything about free dealer visits. I know the car has a 4 yr/ 50K warranty "built-in". Are the free visits and free oil-changes part of that or is there something else that I should be asking for when I close on Monday? Totally awesome car btw. I've taken a week's vacation just so I can drive it!

Racer X-8 12-06-2003 12:15 PM

The free scheduled maintenance for the life of the warranty period (which consists mainly of oil / filter changes) was given as compensation to those of us who purchased BEFORE the announcement of the reduction in HP from 247 to 238.

You, not being in that group, don't qualify (sorry). Any freebies other than warranty issues are totally up to your dealership.

No biggie, but thanks for clearing that up. If I'd been thinking, I should have realized it was the Mazda mea culpa thing. Which, by the way, I admire them for doing voluntarily. (At least according to the one news release I heard on the concessions, they were purportedly offered voluntarily by Mazda.)

Well, yes & maybe no...

238 is an awfully strategic midrange between the original 247 & what most in the know consider to be actual. It falls inside of the required 5% both ways. It's 96% of 247 & 226 is 95% of 238. Now, if the actual is at some point in the future, nailed-down to something less than 226, further negotiations will become neccessary.

So, the 238 anouncement with its concessions may have been voluntarily released, but some see the likelyhood that there's more to it. All of the dyno reults point to hp at the crank to be less than 238, much more like 226.

But lets not open that can of worms any more in this thread. God knows there are plenty of other threads in this forum that go into this matter to the n-th degree. :)

I have always changed my oil at 3000 mile intervals. Every mechanic I have talked to recommends this. I had a Grand Prix GTP before my 8, and when i asked the service manager about the recommended 7500 mile oil inter val, his response was " you'll get through the warranty with that, but if you plan on running high milage on it I wo ulod recommend every 3000 miles." Now i realise thats more money for him, but keeping your oil as clean as possible seems to make sense to me. Remember, oil doesn't wear out, it gets dirty. That's why if you use synthetic on a new car tha mfg says you still have to keep their recommended interval.
