Extreamly hot exhaust temps?

Ok, so getting out of the car i hear that sound of super hot metal tinkling... i walk around back and tap my finger on the exhaust tips for maybe 0.000000000000001 of a millisecond (ok well close enough).. and i damn near burnt a blister on my finger.

I wish i had a temp guage, but i know i could cook a steak on it. I dont think i've ever had a car where the exhaust tips got that hot.

do our cars shoot flames out the back or somehting?

TurboEight 09-10-2007 10:14 PM

yes...the rotary does get ALOT and i mean ALOT hotter then a regular piston motor.

ESP if you have been driving hard..

mysql101 09-10-2007 10:14 PM

so uh... your exhaust tips were hot? weird.

mac11 09-10-2007 10:14 PM

rotaries have much higher EGT's than pistons.

and also yes, if the conditions are right.

Yes......they do! :Eyecrazy:
Hot MF's aren't they..................bet you don't do that again.
I wipe my tips off everyday when getting home from work if there is some oil spooge on them and even using a towel, you better not have it on there to freaking long.

Ouch(for your comment)..................how bizzare, how bizzare for the OP. :uhh:

mysql101 09-10-2007 10:19 PM

from what I recall, my egt's were around 1,200F at idle, 1,600F cruising around, and 1,800F range accelerating. You should be able to get to 2,000 F

mysql101 09-10-2007 10:22 PM

you can see how quickly a cold engine heats up around 40 seconds in on an old video of mine:

Hah! I got burned on my left shin like a week ago when I inadvertenty brushed my bare leg against the exhaust (RB) tip. This was like the second time I did that. The first time was a good 6-7 years ago (Greddy exhaust on my Eclipse).

Oh man! You have to sue Mazda for that! :uhh: :lol2:

nycgps 09-11-2007 08:00 AM

Yes, Exhaust should be HOT. especially after it has been driven for a while.

You will not shoot any flames UNLESS your Catalyst Converter is out.

SayNoToPistons 09-11-2007 09:52 AM

There is something wrong with your car. Your exhaust should measure around 40F even at 9K rpm in the summer.

You're an ass! why you gotta say that ! Argh ! you're going to hell ! :spank:

This newbie is trying to learn ! Argh !

The Exhaust should be around 50f ! not 40 ! Argh !

I understand that exhaust temps are extremely hot, but I just found it odd that the tips themselves were so hot. On my other car the heat doesn't make it past the muffler, so i thought it was out of the ordinary

You found out the hard way!

stingthieves 09-11-2007 11:40 AM

What do you use to keep the exhaust tips looking nice

My car now has 500 miles on it and the bottom of the tips are all black - like soot has been dripping out!

You'll get different opinions of course, but this is the best by far IMHO!

Now I have the RB catback exhaust, but to tell you the truth as I said above. I keep a towel in my garage right near where I get out of the car. And when she's put away for the evening, I will wipe the tips, (just where the soot gathers, usually there right at the bottom) as it's much, much easier to wipe off when it's hot and still kinda wet. I just make it a habit and now I don't even think about it, nor do I have to do it every single night. Use the Englsihcustom stuff probably every other waxing or as needed.

dmc27 09-11-2007 12:41 PM

Yup. Rotary gets pretty damned hot. Don't touch it again.

dibs.

HCTR154 09-11-2007 01:03 PM

I have a Greddy SP2 catback with the huge, protruding exhaust tips. I have a nice scar on my lower calf due to the high temp exhaust.

SayNoToPistons 09-11-2007 02:06 PM

Get some Dry Ice 100% alcohol Injectors for your exhaust, yo.

ProCharger GT 09-11-2007 02:23 PM

If you blast the exhaust tips with liquid nitrogen, it will help to cool them.
