Everyone please post a reply!!!
Ok I have to make my final decision on a car by next week and the biggest issue for me is fuel economy. Can every rx-8 owner please post their average mpg??!?
Thank you very much |
1,000,000 mpg!!!

Hey,
Why should you care, you live in the USA where the gas is cheap! Moose:D :D :D |
If the biggest issue is fuel economy then youl might be disappointed in the RX-8. I drive about 450 miles a week; mostly highway and I average 17-20 MPG depending on how many times I redline it. The fuel light comes on around 13 gallons used so my Shell bill has gone up since buying this car. Added to that the recommend use of premium (I alternate tanks 89 / 93) and overwhelming urge to drive fast your gasoline bill will also go up. If it wasn’t for the fact this car is so awesome to drive, look at, hell even wash I would be upset. I am lucky that In New Jersey 89 /Plus is around $1.70 a gallon I know that out in California you are not so lucky. What other cars are you considering and about how many miles a week to you drive?

17mpg...that's 50/50 highway/city... occassionally i'll get 19...and this is all driving with the DSC/TCS off...and it doesn't matter if I get on it or not...17 seems to be the rate i'm stuck at...but oh well..i didn't buy this car for the mpg....

The gas in the UK can be anything up to £4.00 per gallon which is roughly 5 times more expensive than in the US I believe.
I've got to say I'm a bit disappointed with the MPG on the 8. Mine only achieves around 20 per gallon on a nice long steady run, nowhere near the stated figures in the literature. At the moment it's not a problem as I only drive around 25 miles return trip to and from work each day. Other than the MPG though I think the car is fantastic value for money. |
Personally i started at about 13 mpg driving conservativly. then went to 14 then 15.5 last tank 17.5 and im at 2300 mile. im happy now

If you've been reading through the threads you probably will have heard everything you'll hear in response to your question. I would add only two general observations when you think about the posted figures.
(1) Not only does mileage depend on individual driving habits, it also depends on the proportion of city and highway driving. If you drive exclusively in the city your mileage will be much lower. Highway is better. So when people post numbers, see whether the proportion is stated. (2) The latest flash ("M") is said by many to improve mileage so, if you're buying a new car or if you buy a used car and have it flashed, the numbers reported in earlier posts may not be as relevant as later ones. |

I get 15 -17 mpg. The M flash is probably is probably only good for a couple of miles per gallon more. So figure 17- 19 mpg. If you can't live with that forget about it.

In my normal daily driving I've been getting 17-18 with a mix of highway/city driving in rush hour. On my recent trip to Dallas for Mazda Rev It Up I managed to obtain 21.8 MPG on pure highway driving at cruising speeds of 70-85.

Man up and buy the car.

13 mpg, ALL CITY! But i do redline everyday. PLus stop and go on stop signs and red lights. too many cars out there.

10 mpg, all surface street.

The 8 is a well rounded sophisticated and very nimble sports car. If your last straw is fuel economy, then a sports car is not going to make the mark. If it's not as big of factor as I'm reading it out to be, you'd be crazy to get anything else but the 8! My two cents and very well worth what you paid for it
To answer your question: I'm averaging around 16-18mpg. This is excluding last Sunday's white-knuckle Northern Arizona twisties drive :D http://www.rccaz.com/gallery/view_al...album11&page=1 |
Haven't we talked enough about mileage/mpg!???? There are sooooo many threads about this. As a newbie, even I'm tired of the same questions over and over again!! Fortunately, I was never flamed and learnt quickly reading all the posts that the Search button is the first step before you put up a new post!

Mine has improved a lot. I was getting 18 MPG with about 70% HWY. I drive it hard alot (I hear the shift buzzer often) Still waiting on my current tank to empty to get a good number though. If you care about how much gas you use it might be a problem. If you want to really enjoy driving a car then there is no problem. Your call.

Seriously. if you are concerned about fuel economy, buy an M3 or the popular M6.
To the uninformed, an M6 is sometimes mistaken as an RX-8. Form my enthusiast perspective, I don't know how but many of the average punters make this assumption. The RX-8 is the most economical rotary Mazda to date. However, its still a performance engine & you pay for that at the petrol bowser. Buy the RX-8 for its style, cult status (rotary engine), resale value, envy value, performance, chick factor, performance potential etc etc |
Who cares. You'll be one of the few with an RX-8.

13-15mpg.....city

you are woried about mpg don't buy and 8 - get a diesel.
