I get 200. Wish it had a bigger tank so it got at least 300 before needing to be filled up.

Reeko 01-23-2004 11:33 AM

I ussually get the light at 190-200 miles.
When I fill, it is normally at 200 and 13.5 gallons.

I have only once gotten 220 out of a tank. But, I am all backcountry road driving. Lots of accelleration and starts/stops. Plus, it is about an 8 mile commute to work, so most of the driving is while the car is warming up. (I would consider country roads more like city driving. No sitting at the light, but lots of stops/starts at intersections.)

Ophitoxaemia 01-23-2004 06:24 PM

ive been getting the light about about 240-250 in mixed city/freeway driving, took it to 290 on a tank once on a long drive. this is driving under 80 usually and not too many full throttle accelerations.

My dealer in AZ is telling me that the engine will run better on 89. Anyone else been told this? I am on my second tank and the soot out of the tail pipes is almost gone. Plus it seems to run the same or better.

The Rotary engine injects oil in with the fuel (probably a better technical explaination that mine) to lubricate the seals. In doing this, the octane of the fuel is reduced. I am unsure if the drop is linear, ie 98RON fuel will drop to say 88 and therefore 89 will drop 79.

That said, I have just run my last 2 tanks on 91RON Unleaded (the lowest we go) after running on nothing but 98 since I got my car in Feb. I have to say that the car feels like it runs better and is more responsive. I am driving it harder and my fuel economy is no worse. Next tank will be gently driving to see if it does get better.

I have also been driving with DSC totally off if the roads are dry.

I average 340 Kms (200 Miles) per tank where I fill up with around 55 litres (12.1 Gallons).

Andrew

i usually get 200-240 in mixedusually aggressive driving. On long trips though of less than 300 miles i will get 260 to the tank. But for some reason on trips in the 600-1000 mile range the second tank ends up lasting 320-340 which was nearly 25mpg all at 75mph+...wierd

rx8wannahave 06-09-2005 08:47 AM

WOW...talk about bringing a thread from the dead...lol

I get 250 miles with all city driving with no problem using about 13.x gallons. I've never used up more than 13.7 gallons in my 8. I also have never taken my 8 for a trip (long periods of time on the highway) either so 260+ is the max I've gotten on it so far with no less than 249 miles on it with all city driving.

I probably average 252 miles per fill up @ 13.x gallons used.

LOL...I did not know until I saw Speed-er DOC reply about what he got, and then I decided to look at the dates....lol

CrowBoy66 06-09-2005 09:01 AM

I use 91 octane and it never fails 220 miles no matter how I drive. I'd say I drive 60% highway 40% city. This is true before and after mods(RB Exhaust, RB Intake)

Glyphon 06-09-2005 09:04 AM

when i filled up yesterday, i got 240 miles out of 12.5 gallons. guestimating 50/50 city/highway.

RotaryNoob 06-09-2005 09:11 AM

180 per tank average. On a road trip the best I got was 240. As soon as its warm I redline up to the speed limit 80% of the time.

91 Octane

scarroll 06-09-2005 09:12 AM

I use 89-93 ocatane

I drive 60% city 40% highway.

I never let the rpms get below 3400 unless at idle.

Shift at or near redline 80% of the time.

The low fuel light comes on at 255 miles just about every time.

and if I fill up right then it takes 13.2 gallons.

I have gone 290 on a tank without running out of fuel.

Could tires be a factor? I drive my friends with stock potenzas

and I can't get it 220 before the light comes on.

But mine came stock with Dunlops. Thoughts?

Nope, not the tires, because I drive a lot like you do, and I had the stock potenzas (now pirellis). No change in my mileage. Usually between 250-270 per tank, about 12.9 to 13.4 gallons per fillup.

jangle 06-09-2005 10:12 AM

18-20 MPG. I drive mostly highway.

elysium19 06-09-2005 11:06 AM

Huge change from the infiniti Q45 i used to drive....22.5 gallon tank, about the same milage....could get 420 miles on a tank! (though it cost $45 to fill her up)

for the record, I've been getting 16/20mpg in city/hwy. usually 89 octane.

RotaryIT 06-09-2005 12:17 PM

The usually get about 200 per tank when driving 70/30 city/highway...93 octane.

My best, was on a road trip to Kentucky. I stopped to buyu gas after 175 miles....could not pass it up...it was 93 octane for $1.98 in Ohio. (Michigan was $2.42). It took 6.5 gallons to fill back up....which equates to 26.9 mpg. The conditions were nearly perfect...about 65-70 degrees, low humidity, no rain, and traffic was smooth...I probably averaged 75mpg for the 175 miles. I probably reached 95-100 for a few moments here and there, and dropped to as low as 65 for about the same. I was very impressed by this...I was on N flash at the time.

On P flash, I had 23 mpg on the same trip, but my average driving has bumped up to about 18mpg. Getting about 230-240 per tank now.

zoom44 06-09-2005 12:24 PM

i can get 230-240 around town but usually get 200-220. i have had over 340 miles on 1 tank i think it was 342. with a little over 14 gallons refill for 23.99 mpg

Str8cold 06-09-2005 12:33 PM

I have been getting approximately 250 miles before the low fuel light kicks on, running 93 Octane 60% city 40% highway driving. Averaging 19.23 MPG

Nothing like bringing the past into the present. Just as current musicians :-P

Seriously, it was late and I didnt notice. I tend not to care if its old...only if its relevant.

Sorry everyone. Please stop responding to this thread as its totally inappropriate becuase its to old :D Just kidding!

RX8_Ownz 06-09-2005 09:33 PM

Around 240miles before the light comes on. (91 octane)

redjetpack 06-09-2005 09:42 PM

ha! i had 300 when the fuel light came on! i rule the gas mileage thread!

So...seing as I dredged up the bad old days...coudl anyone make sense of my BS on the octane levels and so forth? Am I talking crap or not?

I have a feeling that octane levels have a greater effect when combined with temperature. I noticed that in the winter, my 8 performed better on 87 octane. In the summer, (and its been hot lately) I can't use 87 or it pings. I have to use 92/3.

I am on my 4th tank since the "P flash", and I have gone 115 miles, and the "less than accurate" fuel guage is still above 1/2....in the past, I was lucky to reach 100 by 1/2.

So, as the days go by...I'm getting happier.

rx8wannahave 06-10-2005 08:22 AM

I just filled up this morning:

261.8 miles driven on 13.642 gallons = 19.19mpg (85/15 city/highway)

I know I can't complain, very pleased! :D

I can't wait to take a trip in the 8...

jangle 06-10-2005 08:37 AM

I get 230-250 MPT. I average 18-22 MPG. Never use anything but 93 Octane. 80% highway, 20% city. As most of you are aware, the Rotary is a high-compression engine. I've talked to some experts about why we have to use 91 or higher Octane. The reason is the higher the Octane, the higher the internal engine temperature can get before the gas burns. The outside temperature has little to do with it unless you're in a traffic jam and it is very hot outside (no air flow forced into the 8). That is why you get the "pinging" at lower Octanes. The gas actually burns (or vaporizes) before its supposed to during the combustion cycle. This also causes a loss of power.

Just thought I'd share because I had the same questions as some of you when I got my 8. For me, the additional cost for Premium is well worth the excitement of driving the 8!

rx8wannahave 06-10-2005 09:02 AM

I wish I could get 91 (just cause it should be a little cheaper) but I too refuse to put anything other than 93 in my 8. Also, I pour gas about 2-3 times a month and at least one of those fill up's will be with Chevron 93 gas which has that Tech (fuel system cleaner) stuff which by experiance I've found to really do a good job.

That way (because of traffic (well and too keep my rotary clean)) since I can't rev it to 9K daily "sometimes", the little Renesis will stay clean.

Columbus 06-10-2005 10:25 AM

The best I've gotten was 300 miles before the fuel light came on and that was about 80% highway 20% city. 93 octance and I had the a/c on.

monzter 06-10-2005 08:30 PM

210-220 is the best i've ever gotten. 95/5 City/Hway I'm not even sure what version of the flash i'm on. Next time i'm at the dealer, I'm going to have them check for me.

jbrasure 06-10-2005 10:52 PM

I do 95% highway driving, and I can go about 220 miles on 3/4 of a tank.

Old Rotor 06-11-2005 11:35 PM

I just did a long road trip with the cruse set at 65mph. The fuel lite came on at 371 miles and it took 13.5 gallons. It's not easy to keep the revs down but just to see what it can do. I have a stock auto with 22k on it and run 87oct then 91oct back and forth.

ElusiveFX 06-14-2005 11:12 PM

Hah, i'm lucky to get over 220 (city driving) out of a full tank...

are you sure about these #s ???? that is over 27mpg. if so you win. the best i have done is 23 to 24 @< 72mph.

i still average ~21mpg 15% city rest interstate.

midlifer 06-15-2005 07:07 AM

My automatic just hit 2,000 miles and it seems like no matter how I drive it I get 19mpg. Can't complain, my truck gets 12 :(

Finally, we found the car that they used to get the window sticker MPG! You might want to get your car on a dyno, you probably have 250hp+

m2pro 06-15-2005 10:33 AM

At 250 miles on current tank, (give or take about 3 miles either way), and I still have a quarter tank left. I've been driving this tank about 85% on the interstate crusing at either 74 or 80...AC on. (WHO CAN DEAL WITH THE AC OFF IN ALABAMA?!)

I usually get around 240ish... but on my last tank, I never once conserved. I floored it all around town and ended up at about 150 miles with slightly more than a quarter tank left when I refilled up. I'm used to a 98 Civic ex... I WAS used to flooring it and seeing the difference of maybe 10-20 miles in a tank for WAY less of a tank, and using 87 octane. Now, I'm used to filling up a 16 gallon on 93 octane and getting less miles to the tank considerably. It was sad when I first started... but you just have to accept it and move on and start enjoying the best looking car that ever existed.
