Everyone! How Many Miles Can You Go On A Full Tank?!?

well this is what i got...70% highway going 80-90...and 30% city driving on a full tank. is this what everyone is getting around? ohh yeah, this is with dsc and tcs on. =) everyone reply. need some feedback!

Jeff_pap31s 01-16-2004 05:40 PM

I get about 200 in the city, but I have a lead foot!!!!

allstate 01-16-2004 05:42 PM

I reguarly get 250-260 miles per tank. 70% city/ 30% highway. I use 93 octane

The most mileage I've ever achieved on a tank of gas was 285. It was on a trip from Dallas to Houston

Tamas 01-16-2004 05:42 PM

I get about 260 with similar conditions.

zthang 01-16-2004 05:48 PM

How many gallons is the RX8 tank? I've always wondered.

i3man 01-16-2004 05:54 PM

I've gone 240 miles and filled in 12.994 gallons and the gas light came on about 5 miles before I filled up. That means I still had about 3 gallons in the tank and could have gone another 25-30 miles comfortably.

But I don't want to add my name to the list of 8 owners that have run out of gas so I normally try to fill up after between 200 - 220 miles.

Jeff_pap31s 01-16-2004 06:27 PM

your pushin it at 250.

ptiemann 01-16-2004 06:32 PM

My yellow light came on last week at 282 miles, I was surprised, because I had not driven it carefully with the intention to get a high mpg.

I calculated 20.5 mpg for that tank.

Since I've had 23.15 as my best number so far, I'd say it is definitely possible to get over 300 miles with one tank.

282 * 23.15 / 20.5 = 318 miles .. and that's when the light has *just* come on. 2 to 3 gallons left meaning another 50 miles..

--> 318 + 50 = 368 miles.

I drive 95% highway and fill up as soon as the yellow light comes on.

KFence27 01-16-2004 06:36 PM

Drove to Vermont last weekend from NJ, got 250 at 100% highway, my baby likes to binge drink gasoline like its FRAT BRO.

Speed-ER doc 01-16-2004 07:22 PM

Usual pattern = 220 miles, 13 gallons, before the light comes on.

Farthest on a tank was 260 miles, 14 gallons (road trip).

Light always comes on at 13.5 gallons for me.

allstate 01-16-2004 07:42 PM

Everyone don't forget to note what octane you are using

MEGAREDS 01-16-2004 07:51 PM

Got 235 miles on one tank... once -- but I've yet to do a full highway tank.

Zeltar 01-16-2004 07:59 PM

Okay, so the gas tank holds 15.9 gallons. How much of that is actually usable fuel? I don't think I've ever been able to squeeze more than 13.9 gallons into the tank. And, I'd swear I was on fumes. Has anybody actually used that last drop? And, if you happen to run out of fuel in front of the gas station, how much fuel did you squeeze in?

Yes, I've done it. 15.3 gallons usable fuel in the tank.

As for how far can I go on a tank -- my mileage varies, but checking my log I've kept since day 1, I see fillups at 351 miles (best), 332.9 miles (when I ran out of gas), and 320 miles.

Usually, I fill up at around 13-13.5 gallons, and based on my typical 22 mpg, that would put a typical tank range for me at 336.6 (15.3 X 22).

I use 93 octane, and my normal commute is 85% highway.

Edited to add:
DSC is always on.

(And to clarify a sentence above.)

i have pushed it to over 300 miles on 3-4 tanks in a row on my trip thru cali (i know i know -don't even speak of miles per tank yada yada). one of those thanks i actually put in 15 gallons to the first stop of the pump. needless to say i was sweating the last couple of miles and my wife was very upset that i almost stranded us. it was 320 and a little more if i remember correctly. the first tank out on that trip i went from portland oregon alll the way into cali to the first gas station i found and that was like 310 miles for 14.? gallons

itsallaboutgary 01-16-2004 08:43 PM

for those of you who are getting over 250 + miles...do you turn OFF your TCS and DSC??

Doctorr 01-16-2004 08:53 PM

240....

240 miles from full to yellow light.

Doesn't seem to be affected by my speed, and no, DSC & TCS stay on.

My warning light comes on generally around 220-230. This last tank it was 240-ish when the light came on.

I generally dont muck with the DSC and just leave it on.

I have got as low as sub-15mpg over a 150 mile period, but that was some very aggressive driving (the last SD rx run a couple of weekends ago)

i3man 01-16-2004 11:07 PM

Can someone tell us exactly how far you can go after the yellow light comes on before you run out of gas :p

See this thread. HiX8 says 29 miles.

i3man 01-16-2004 11:25 PM

Thanks, that is good to know. Where I live I can't drive 29 miles in any direction without falling into the pacific ocean :p I think I'd be better off with a life raft in my trunk than a extra gallon of gas :p

Squidward 01-17-2004 12:59 PM

I've got 10,000 miles on my car.

see my crappy mpg log.

Agree, speed, DSC, octane, driving style (within limits) don't seem to affect mileage. Stop and go traffic does, so if you're doing city/highway or stop-n-go freeway you'll get less mileage than hiway road trip of a few hundred miles.

My warning light comes on before 220 miles, and I always fill up by 220. I religiously get 16.5-16.8 mpg regardless of octane, DSC/TCS, or driving like grannie. EXCEPTION: If you followed my long saga here I've filled up and calibrated twice since getting my car back. First tank, I drove to LA and back and got like 19.1 mpg, a near-record for me. Second tank was all local driving and got 17.1, which is extraordinary. This is on 87 octane. Nothing I've ever done has ever caused me to waiver from the 16.x mpg until my last two tanks. Two things happened: All the maintence done in the thread above which included replacing the clutch and associated parts. Plus I went over 10K miles almost simultaneously. Maybe my luck is about to change...

takahashi 01-17-2004 05:16 PM

I can go just sky of 600km in a full tank in the freeway. More if turn off the DSC

JeRKy 8 Owner 01-17-2004 05:36 PM

I do 100% city driving all the time and I get 230 - 240 miles a tank. Thats w/drivingdown allthe way from full to the very last E mark after the light has come on. I usually get the lightbetween 205 - 215. When thegauge is on the 3/4tank mark I have between 50 - 60 miles on the car. The onlyway I can get 250 - 260 out of a tank in my Rx8 isif I do at least 20% highwaydriving. My car has ~5500 miles on it now. The EPA should have listed 16 for city mpg becausethats the best I can get even if I keep the car under 50 from full to low.
