engine surge

my 2004 rx8 seems to surging at high rpms.I just noticed a weird noise thru the exhaust when i smashed it to the floor, then drove another 3 miles ,left it idle for about 3 minutes, when i pulled out it ran about 300 yards and then died! I left it set for about 3 minutes then tried to start it,after some coaxing it finally started. When i got home i revved it up to around 7000 rpms and it surged almost like it was against a governer Any ideas as to what is caysing this??

the rx8 has auxiliary intake ports which open in the upper rpms, the power dips and then shoots back up when they open. that may be what you are feeling.

the whole dying thing... ahh... thats an issue. lets get some more info.

mileage? latest flashes on the pcm? plugs/coils ever changed? etc. anything you can give on the car is probably helpful.

the car has 42000 miles on it . ijust purchased it a month ago,the car flooded out once, followed the manual and it restarted,i was planning on a good tune-up real soon because of unknown history.

yeah, i would buy new coils and spark plugs. i'd also got to a dealership and complain of lack of power and ask for the msp-16 update. which they will then do. it also includes an engine cleaning. if they try to charge you for it, thats bs. dont accept it, go to another dealership or whatever.

the ignition coils i would buy at finishlineperformance.com and for spark plugs i would try one of our forum vendors (like bhr or race roots). they have the cheapest prices.

Sounds like its in limp mode. Things to check; plugs, coils, wires. If they look good move to the cat. Could be clogged up.
My friend flooded his 8. When that happens it takes the spark plugs withem. If your plugs had any life left in them that went out the window when you where flooring it around.
Time for a tuen up!
