Engine idle speed
Anyone know how low of an engine speed that wankel engines idle at?
My mom has a Dodge Intrepid that can idle as low as 500 rpms. (in gear, automatic) |
I'd imagine it's around that area....
Does it make a difference anyway ? :) I don't know what purpose it serves to know... but educate me :) |
My old 7 never idled below 900 RPM. Towards the end of its life the thermowax (spelling?) sensor went wonky, and it would idle upto 2000, and even more fun, do a rythmic surge between 1000-1500 RPM.
Common problem on 2nd gens, I don't think this was an issue in later years. Rotaries idle at about the same point as regular piston engines do. |
My first gen with 5-speed idled at 750 RPM. I believe the spec for automatic was 650 RPM. My first gen developed a problem with the AC on, it would idle at 500 RPM, always treatening to stall.

i think with the much lower overlap and higher thermal efficiency (longer power stroke and higher compression than many early wankels) the RENESIS will have a very low and lean idle, which would provide that 40% better emissions and sky-high (well, relatively speaking!! the car makes 255 bhp all motor!!) city-mpg...
