Engine failed compression test **How much is it worth?**
I am having my engine replaced this coming week and I need to figure out what to do with the old engine.
I was offered $100 for the long block (all accessories attached to the core). Do you guys feel that is a fair price? |
If your best offer is 100, I would just keep it, rebuild it over time and either sell it or have back up motor.
|
^+1
Plus, it'll give you an understanding of the engine without having to worry about ruining yours!! |
keep it as spare part for the future or sell it to me for 200 :naughty::naughty::naughty:
good luck with the new engine bro |
deprnds on whst failed...could be worth up to $800 or more...or almost nothing :)
|
+1 on keepin it. $100 is nothing.
|
I live in a condo so keeping it is not an option.
I know companies like Mazmart rebuild these engines. What do they pay for failed ones? The rotor #2 is what failed the compression test. Rotor #1 passed. Everything else on the engine is fine. |
worth closer to a grand than a hundred
|
keep it and do a coffee table with it as a display !!!! well thats what i'm going to do... in a future
|
depends on where you live, I can give u 150 for your engine. if you're not too far away from me I just come pick it up.
it will be a fun thing to play around with. let me know :) |
That's a dam good price. unless you had an apex seal blow in both housings, your water jackets failed and you ran the engine with no oil.
Where are you located? |
i bet it fits on your trunk lol just kidding... if you have it in 2 mothns when i graduate ill buy it from you :)
|
I am located in Ottawa, Canada.
The fact that somebody thinks its worth closer to 1,000 than 100 is interesting. Who the hell would pay that for an engine that needs a rebuild? |
you would be surprised. Good core parts are getting harder to find.
hell just the intake is worth more than $100. OD |

id buy the irons and possibly the housings off you assuming they are in good condition.

If I sell it, it would be the entire long block. |
Hi Guys,
New user here so go easy. I have searched throught previous threads and thought this was the best place to post since this has cropped up many times and no-one likes a new thread when there are millions others like it! I have a 2004 RX8 231 PS with 37k (located in UK and owned for 1 year) that has just failed a compression test on both rotors (albeit not by much). Like many others I have serious problems from warm start especially after filling up at petrol station. My question is, I have 1 year of Finance left to pay on it so what is a realistic figure I could punt this on for? I would be reluctant to sell it privately advertising it as in working order which it clearly isnt. It still drives perfectly and starts fine from cold. Any help much appreciated. One very disgruntled owner :tear: |
I don't know what the UK market is for engines, 8's with blown engines, or 8's with fresh engines, but you will have some research to do. Basically, find out those 3 values. If you can get a personal/signature loan to cover the engine replacement, and selling it would make your money back plus cover the finance value remaining, then that's one option. If you could sell it for what you owe, that's another.
If neither of those are true, you are largely sol, and are probably going to take a loss trying to get rid of it :( |

Absolutely gutted because I love it :( |
I went threw this on my last car. Engine blew, owed about 3k on it. Cost about 3k to replace the engine and a few other things that were wrong. When everything was finally paid off i traded it in. If I could do it again I would have just sold it with the bad engine and move on.

My question is, would anyone WANT to buy it with me putting in the description that the engine has difficulties? It's not blown as such and will still start, but the compression problem is there. £3k a reasonable figure? |
Not sure on Europe prices, but if you can't get a price you want (and you have some mechanic skills) you might do better parting it out. But it will take awhile to sell off everything.
|
Low compression 8s go for about $5,000 here in the US. Rebuilding the engine does cost a bit, but basic low compression isn't an internal destruction situation, so most parts are reusable. Get a different quote though. A dealer is likely your worst price there.

when you say failed "barely" what does that mean? can you give us the numbers?
