yes, engine oil and motor oil are the same.
The quaker state 5w-20 will work just fine.

One recommendation: Please take the time to read the owner's manual from cover to cover. I know this sounds lame but you will honestly learn things about this car that the salesman did not mention to you.
It is a VERY worthwhile read.
If you don't have the owner's manual please register on www.mazdausa.com under the owner's section and you canm download a pdf version.

Dood you need to sell this car or start reading stickies and threads immediatly... you are going to break this beautiful car.

every other fuel up you need to check the oil level and if needed add a little bit, you should eat up about 1 quart in between oil changes.

You really need to read up these are not your everyday normal piston pushing car. they require very special care...

now read before your really sad when your car ***** on itself

thats not a low oil LEVEL indicator light like the fuel light. thats a low oil PRESSURE light. Means you were so low the oil pump couldn't suck up any oil and you are potentially starving many critical parts of any oil. you need to add oil WELL BEFORE you ever see that light. You should NEVER see that light go on in your car.

Boo Hiss!

But.....I'll respect the request, even though that was some pretty heavy handed censorship that you just handed out on this thread(given all the other crap around here)!

Now...tell me why my album pictures are out of the site rotation?

As was said, DO NOT let it get low on oil. This engine is VERY touchy with oil, and needs to be changed regularly and since it uses a small bit of oil for the seals, you may need to add a quart in the course of 3k miles *Depending on how heavy your foot is*. It's best to keep it up at all times. If you see it getting a quart or so low, add a bit in. Try to check every couple gas fill-ups just to make sure.

I've read the owner's manual from cover to cover on every vehicle I've ever owned, and I know a thing or two about automotives. As Jedi54 cited salespeople are woefully under-educated in general and even less so with the RX-8 in particular (why I do not know; if I was sitting around all day waiting for customers ..... but that's just me).

Many community colleges have basic automotive courses and it would be good to take one.

No one was born knowing all this stuff.

UMMM NO!!!....Engine oil is for engines...Motor oil is for motors, you have a rotary...so you gotta use something else
Just busting your *****, welcome to the club. And don't sweat the smart asses here, they wern't born knowing everything either. And you gotta look at it this way...EVERYBODY opens up their gifts and starts messing with them before they read the directions. That being said...READ THAT BOOK!! It will save your *** and wallet!!

Damn, glad I knew the basics before my first post here...

Lol, people like to sound smart on forums; tis the way of the online world.

Motor and Engine oil are the same. Rx8 motors/engines use up amounts of this oil for casual use. No other engine besides another rotary, which is different from a piston engine, uses oil like this. For that reason, your dipstick will read lower more quickly than other cars that are not Mazda RX vehicles (for the most part).

Anyway, brand doesn't matter. Line cuts right there. Beyond the line people will start debating amongst brands and types of motor/engine oils. But for now, seeming that you just want to go by the book, use any brand's "5-20" oil.

Cool?

thats not a low oil LEVEL indicator light like the fuel light. thats a low oil PRESSURE light.
That's true for most cars, but on the 8 it really is a low level indicator light. As long as you filled the oil before the pressure gauge dropped no catastrophic harm was done. Much better to keep the oil well above that point, though. It cools as well as lubricates. Top off when it gets a quart down.

On motor vs engine... There are those who insist that internal combustion devices are engines, and electric devices are motors. But that does not explain why we say "motorcycle" instead of "enginecycle."
