At around 6-7k RPM the power dropped off instantly to the point where it jerked me forward in my seat. I looked out the back window and had a decent cloud of black smoke coming out of, as well as into the car.

I tried reproducing the issue on the way home and had no luck. Compression came in around 7.5 about 2 months ago with no large variation between faces or rotors. Which was largely the same as it was a year ago.

To me this sounds like the APV not opening correctly or an ignition issue of some kind. Are there any other common causes for something like this that I should look in to while I've got it on a lift tomorrow? Could a bad O2 sensor cause such a drastic power loss?
To me, that sounds like you are having ignition problems.

Avoid driving the car for now. You might end up destroying the cat.

Luckily there's no cat. I planned on pulling everything apart tomorrow as far as the ignition was concerned though.

I recently traded my truck for a 2004 Mazda RX8. I don't know if this is a dumb question or not , but when I put the car in reverse, back out and put it in drive the car jerks forward and drives normally after that. The guy who owned it before me said he had bigger tires on the back, but I don't know if that could be a reason for the rough shift because I don't know much about cars.

You can check the ignition with some sort of spark tester.

Something I tell to everyone with an AT car is that you should always check the fluid level and colour.

Also, not sure if you are doing it, but don't change direction without stopping. Back your car out, stop it completely, then put it in D. Same thing the other way, stop completely before you put it in R. Applies to all transmissions out there. At least on an AT, there is no nasty grinding if you put it in R when you are still moving forward.

I highly suggest you read the New Owner sticky before something goes wrong for you.

Air inlet duct elbow

Anybody have any tips on how to remove the air inlet duct elbow from the accordion tube? Having some trouble. The elbow split in half from the hose and now it’s stuck in the socket. Luckily, got the half that was stuck in the hose out.

Thanks

Are you talking about one of the three breather hoses just in front of the throttle body?

If so, what Kamal El says. You just have to carefully dig it out.

If not, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Get some Heavy Duty Silicone Spray. Anything rubberish will come right apart.

You should be able to get behind it with a flat blade and wiggle it out. Like others have said, use some spray lubricant to aid removal. You can get the appropriate size 90' fittings at a hardware store instead of ordering new from dealership. I found nice black plastic barbed fittings at a local do it best center.

Be sure to not drive the car without those hooked up. One of the vacuum hoses plays a crucial role in the operation of your oil injectors.

Has anyone tried to put a first gen mazda3 steering wheel in their 8? If so, do all of the connectors match up? The controls look identical.

Can anyone tell me if the three pegs on the flywheel play any significant roll or is it all on the 6 bolts. Can I get away without the pegs?

It's not a sensor, odds are it needs a new engine. If they can't prove the engine is healthy, with a compression test, walk away.

Technically you are not even supposed to tow start modern manual cars. Maybe in a pinch, yeah, but it's not supposed to happen on a regular basis.

I saw somewhere that the trim piece with the aux input, in the center console of the S2 can be replaced with a similar piece from a Mazda 5, which will have a USB port instead (I think).

Does that ring a bell for anyone? I can't find the thread anymore.

Okay, Air conditioning control ***** -

$11 for a set of 3 for the Mazda 3 $11 for a set of 3 for the Mazda 3
,

$55 for ONE for the Rx8 $55 for ONE for the Rx8
!

Look, I don't care what it looks like at this point, can anyone show me one for around $10-15 that will WORK? The inside portion of mine was apparently brittle plastic that just snapped. And now I have to change my AC controls with a pair of pliers I keep in the glove box.

I picked the flywheel pegs(dowels) today. Got them at the dealership.

Fixed mine by adding a fuel injector grommet around the fragile plastic stem inside the ****. 8 years later, still kicking. If the stem is still there, you cam fix it.
