Dropped my car off to get the brake squeal fixed...

I was getting brake squeal every time I did a gradual stop from 40+ mph. So while I'm there at the dealer I ask if they can also put the latest flash on the ECU. They tell me there has to be a complaint by the customer that would warrant any service to be done. I say "a ECU flash is like an upgrade is it not?, it's like upgrading Windows with the latest updates". They agree but they still are adamant that some sort of problem must exist. They are keeping it overnight and performing service on it tomorrow. Does this seem fair to you guys? I thought the latest ECU flash should be offered to all customers regardless of whether they are experiencing problems or not.

I can still call them tomorrow and argue some more. What do you think I should say?

They usually leave your PCM flash (ECU) alone unless there is a recall about it or customer is experiencing problems.

So your dealer is right about that part. but the thing is , I dont see the reason to NOT to get the newest flash. since like you said, its updates. yes its free for customers. and they can bill Mazda for the labor (I think 0.3, hey still money)

What year is your 8? if its a 04-05, tell them your engine stall while crusiing highway. They HAVE to flash your ECU, its a recall and Mazda will make official announcenment soon. but dealers should have the newest flash already, which is the "S" flash

This flash also fixes the OMP not supplying enough oil problem.

but the brake squeak has nothing to do with the computer, however. Just tell them to perform the Brake Squael TSB.

Yeah I'm already getting the brake squeal TSB done. I don't want to lie, so I said that when I start up my car it idles to high (2100rpm) and then drops after 5-6 seconds.

NgoRX8 07-06-2006 11:52 PM

^that's normal. lol

Rinkadink 07-07-2006 12:04 AM

Oh, i read somewhere it shouldn't break 2k RPMs.

Raptor2k 07-07-2006 12:17 AM

Mine does every morning...

The flashes are the recalls, they should give you the latest unless you have it already.

Is your 8 an 05 or 06 btw?

You should just start a blog, like Klegg. With an average of 13 posts a day, 12 of them probably being new threads :yelrotflm (i kid i kid, kind of...), it'd be a lot easier to find your awesome posts
I guess you could try a different dealer. The dealer I go to seems to be pretty okay with tsb's...

Rinkadink 07-07-2006 01:57 AM

It's an 05. I'll call tomorrow and argue that the flashes should be done regardless of whether or not I'm having a problem because they are crucial to have the car runs its best.

Rinkadink 07-07-2006 02:54 AM

I shot them an email. Hopefully they respond before service is finished.

There is a service bulletin out for the squeals. Here's the link:

Why live with them when you can get it fixed? I found it quite embarassing when I was giving rides to people in my "new" car (its actually slightly used) and have them hear squeals from the brakes you normally only get in old beaters.

True, its been on my list of things to do. Just haven't gotten around to doing it. I'm changing my brakes in a few months so i really don't care about it squealing. Its not that bad, only happens a few times during the week for some odd reason. Only when my 8 is tempermental.

Amen to that. I had the same bs squeaks and it was driving me crazy. I wasn't optimistic that the dealer would be able to fix it but to my amazement they did.

limepro 07-07-2006 11:07 AM

hmm its weird the dealer told u they wouldnt flash it without a problem i mentioned the new flash and the dealer was happy as hell to do it for me.

i always hear horror stories about mazda dealerships but i have to say i love mine i live in san diego during the week but i refuse to go to a san diego mazda dealer i only deal with lithia in fresno 350 miles away. good thing im there every weekend i will only use san diego dealers if i absolutely have to
