Doubt :-(

I like the RX-8 alot but I'm starting to doubt its performance as it just simply gets eaten by 350Zs, G35s, SRT4s, WRXs, and obviously muscle cars because it just doesn't have torque. Is there any way to improve this cars torque?

Razz1 09-22-2009 11:38 AM

It's not a straight line racer.

It is a track car.

A car that knows how to go around corners.

Jethro Tull 09-22-2009 11:40 AM

No. Get another car. It's not the car for you, you'll never be happy with it.

RIWWP 09-22-2009 11:40 AM

:sigh

Another one of these threads.

Point blank, before the flaming begins in earnest. You have 3 options: turbocharger, supercharger, or nitrous. Be prepared to spend alot of money.

Or trade it in for one of the cars you just mentioned.

Or take it to auto-cross or a road course and use it for what it was designed for.

That being said....this is THE MOST COMMON question asked on the boards. Any chance you looked for it? The constant question by people unwilling to do their homework pisses the rest of us off. So brace yourself for what's coming....

xun4gvn4everx 09-22-2009 11:48 AM

I heard the "No Fear" sticker gives you 500 lb-ft of torque!! Atilla told me so it has to be true!!

^^

mikesol 09-22-2009 11:51 AM

Let's compare to each.

The SRT-4 is an interesting car, and a direction I would like to see Dodge pursue further. It's fast and there are lots of warrantied factory upgrade kits.
Unfortunately it's not produced anymore and virtually all the used examples you'll find will have been abused.
It handles acceptably for an FWD car, but you will still be able to lose it in the twisties with an RX-8 despite its superior power. As well, it looks like a Neon - because it is a Neon - and nobody's going to give you any respect in it.

The G35 is essentially a 350Z with four doors, so we can take them together for the most part. They're pretty well balanced and very powerful, but also a lot heavier than the RX-8. Acceleration times and top speeds are very similar, and the Nissans get slightly better gas mileage. They're definitely something to cross-shop. I prefer the looks of the RX-8 and the wider powerband of the rotary.

The WRX is something else entirely, as it's an econocar that's aimed at rally. They can be made really fast, and can outhandle an 8 especially on questionable terrain, but they're not in the same market segment at all. The 8 is a car that is both sports and luxury (beautiful interior, exotic exterior) whereas the WRX is focused on being a performer without concern for its looks (generally ugly depending on which generation) and interior (boring and functional).

I would suggest test driving the Nissans and the WRX for sure; I cross shopped all of those before deciding to get my 8, because it simply had the best combination of features and looks of all the cars.

^Very well said! :yesnod:

tubingchamp 09-22-2009 12:08 PM

I don't think a WRX can outhandle an RX-8 on pavement.. Maybe on wet pavement, but not on dry.

Capt. Silvia 09-22-2009 12:30 PM

Understood, yeah I should have searched sorry guys I made this thread between classes for a quick answer, not realizing it's "staleness." Anyway I still will probably go with the RX cause now that I think about it, a turbo kit on a rotary would probably be pretty interesting. So I think it is worth saving up for. Of course when I test drove the car I did like that even though it didn't accelerate really fast, I did like the sweet feel of the rotary. I guess I'm just being too concerned with numbers on paper than I am the real feel of the car in reality.

xun4gvn4everx 09-22-2009 12:32 PM

Its cool man, we have all been burned one time or another for saying something stupid. But, if you do decide to go with the 8, it is an addiction that will hook you in and you will wonder why on Earth you ever questioned buying the car. Good luck bro! :)

Hidef1080 09-22-2009 12:46 PM

I don't know what "eaten" means.

The 8 with less hp and tq was able to run with the 350z but them dudes knew how to drive I guess.....

If being the fastest kid in the sandbox is your thing, then I would say get another car outside of the 8.
Save up your money and get ready to buy yet another car 3 to 5 years down the line as they tend to get faster with new models coming out at such.

I fear the 8 is not for you.

Peace.

Shijin-Kun 09-22-2009 12:56 PM

when i totaled my last 8 i got a nice lump sum of money. I had the option of getting another 8 or getting a civic and putting a turbo and pushing 300whp but my other half mentioned something very important. In the end if the rx8 and the civic are parked next to each other in a parking lot people are going to notice the rx8 more for its exterior and interior style. I was also looking at a wrx (ugly car imo) and a g35 (too heavy). Glad i stayed with the 8.

anyways, if you're seriously concerned about that this obviously isn't the car for you, unless you plan on spending about 10k back into the car...any of the cars you mentioned before may be better choices....

Huey52 09-22-2009 01:37 PM

There's always the FI option, if your pockets have some girth. ;)

Now you're thinking. The car handles like no other. There's plenty of power once you learn how to use it. The top end is right up there. Go test drive another one, and this time, really pay attention to what the car is telling you.

It is reasons like this why we buy our 8s and never look back:
