Does the spoiler really help?

I like the look of the 8 without the spoiler alot more than the 8 with the spoiler. Does the spoiler help for anything under 90mph? Also, can it be removed?

Thanks

MS spoiler is adjustable, and does add downforce.

The stock spoiler AFAIK is just for show - and it doesn't look very good.

Four holes in truck lid....does that mean four holes directly to into your trunk area? And if it rains...problem.

use a temp. plug. like a rubber plug...

Im sure the stock spoiler doesnt do nething.... MS and aftermarket spoilers have some functionality

SSJ 909 Jun 14, 2006 11:47 PM

From my understanding a spoiler adds a bit of drag, but basically helps keep the car stable, and from taking off lol

NgoRX8 Jun 14, 2006 11:48 PM

the euro lip reduces drag too

presequel Jun 14, 2006 11:51 PM

i don't like spoilers, but lip spoilers are ok.

Have any of seen a full ms kit w/no spoiler?

yup

Stavesacre21 Jun 15, 2006 12:11 AM

yea, i'd heard the opposite. Not only is it non-functional for the purpose of downforce, but indeed, it adds some drag. Nothing excessive, but its not really helpful in any way.

IMO, i like the way it looks. Could definetely have looked worse!

sheba Jun 15, 2006 12:13 AM

Do u like it with or without?

The stock spoiler really helps the overall appearance of the already hot-looking car, imo.

Nodoz Jun 15, 2006 05:37 AM

I like the stock spoiler. MS spoiler is ok, but I seriously doubt either give you any noticible help.

valpac Jun 15, 2006 06:15 AM

Always thought the spoiler adds to the looks of the 8. But aside from looking good, the stock spoiler does little more than "clean up" the air as it flows off the car. Since it is basically a symmetric airfoil with no angle of attack (AOA), there will be no down force. Additionally, the stock spoiler is not angled into the airflow therefore there is little added drag over a spoilerless trunk lid. The MS spoiler, however, can be adjusted and does provide some downforce. And drag. Because of the small wing area and low vertical placement ("dirty" air), I doubt that the MS spoiler provides any serious downforce, though.

the ms spoiler has wind tunnel testing under it's belt.

the stock spoiler... has been tested on many eclipses.

[ i want one of these, because i seen a chevy lumina with one. i take it that this gt wing adds like 50 more hp. so you yep i want one :P. and also i heard that you can contact other life forms with it.

I'm sure the stock one has seen a wind tunnel as well. I would hate to think that when the car was designed they spent all that time/money on making the car what it is, and then slapped on some random body part without testing it in some way.

But then again, you could be right. :)

Rootski Jun 15, 2006 09:12 AM

The stock spoiler is mounted too low to the trunk to have any significant effect, drag or otherwise.

Sheep Jun 15, 2006 09:13 AM

The official number for the drag coefficent is 3.1 (no wing) and with the offical rear wing is 3.0. I don't have the number for the MS wing, but it should be at least 3.0 or lower.

Those drag coefficients are about an order of magnitude to big. As well, the wing would not lower the drag coefficient. A trunk lip spoiler might, but not the wing.

amen to y our post. i think that is why i made joke about 50 hp. i do not understand why kids here have them on. i understand if they grip or drift alot. but i do not think a lumnia or car like that needs, them. i tink it look cool on gt car but not a every day type gt car. on sponsered gt car.

Sorry I was thinking something else and multiplied those numbers by 10. Yes it is suppose to be .31 and .30. I got those numbers from the Rx8 book so it should be right.
