does my brand new rx8 need paint protection and if so what do you all recommend?

I bought a 2010 RX8 las week and now I am thinking about all the things the dealership tried to sell me... I have a sport model in liquid silver metallic and I would love to get everyones take on paint protection. I tried searching her for some information but I can not find any info...

"paint Protection" is an acronym for "extra dealer profit" in laymans terms :)

it's already been said, keep a good coat of wax on the car. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to protect it from every nick and scratch... learn to live with them or be prepared to spend lots of money repainting it every year.

I got a clearbra installed about 2-3 months after I purchased my RX8 brand new. Wish I would have done it right off the bat. I don't know about where you're from but down here in Phoenix I catch a ton of rocks/debris to the front end on the highways. I could hear them pelting my baby every time I drove to work and it made me cringe every time. Don't have that problem anymore.

If you're thinking about getting one, don't get it through the dealership, they just outsource it and take a cut of the (marked up) price. Ask for recommended installers in your local regional forum. I was recommended to an installer who quoted me about $200 less than the dealership guys. I used that $200 to get extra coverage and ended up with about 2x the coverage for the same total price as the dealership guys.

And don't wait if you are gonna do it, you WILL regret waiting, I know I do.

zaino is nice but it's not some magical substance.

Anyone remember Polyglycoat? Really big among dealer profiteers in the 70s. As I recall, not only was it worthless, but it sometimes damaged the paint.

Dealers used to slap that stuff, and low-end rustproofing, on every car as a way of jacking the price up. Eventually a lot of dealers wound up signing consent orders with local consumer protection agencies to not do that. If you were a vitim of the protectant scam, the best to hope for would be that they did not actually put the stuff on, so the only loss was money.

I wouldnt get dealer protection, but I would defintely put some protection on the paintwork

Zaino is very good stuff, but I personally prefer wax

Poorboys World FTW. Wash, clay bar, Poorboys Polish w/carnuba, Poorboys EX sealant, and Poorboys Nattys Paste. All their products can be layered with each other, and they can be applied in SUN or shade. Great stuff IMO. Ive never been disappointed. Last a good while as well!

The car is getting zaino put on it as I type... I will let you all know how this go when I pick it up. The shop I am using is the Norther California Zaino distributer so I am confident that I will have a great result.

I guess I misunderstood your question.

I used Zaino on one of my previous cars for a while, and it looked quite good, but I was disappointed with its bug guts protection. The better things I've used have not only looked good and lasted a reasonable amount of time, but also made it much easier to wash off bug guts.

I've been extremely happy with Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0. It's supposed to be especially good at making black cars look good (and getting rid of swirl marks). When I got my 2009 RX-8 (sparkling black mica) the dealer had left swirl marks all over the thing. I was pissed, but I knew if I mentioned it to them, they would just screw it up more. I tried the Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0, and after one application (by hand), the swirl marks were almost gone. After the next application, they were completely gone. The car looks fantastic with it, and bug guts come off much easier than with most other products I've tried on all of my other cars over the years. Here's what the car looked like after the second application:

If you don't mind taking the time to wax the car once a month, then use Victoria Concours wax on it.

If you just want something to make the car a lot easier to clean and protect it in the long term, then have Gtechniq C1 crystal applied to the paint and have them throw you some of their C2 spray in just to top it up once a month or so (just wipe on and wipe off when you're drying the car, helps with drying and tops up the protection). C1'll last a couple of years.

Get 3m's clear bra, dont settle for anything less. it will last you for years.

Wash and wax is good. I do it to my car all the time. but Clear bra gives ya best front end protection against flying rocks/road debris

Hi All,

I just picked up the car and the Zaino has made my new car look even better than I thought possible!

The paint looks like liquid silver mercury and naturally a bird hit it on the way home... I just wiped it droppings off with no effort and no visible residue at all.

I took my car to Steve at Deep Reflections In Los Gatos, CA. He gave me a very VERY reasonable price, put on tow extra coats, gave me a free brand new microfiber towel, and took off a few bucks too boot because I did not take him up on his offer of eating at a local place while the car was being worked on. I can not say enough about Steve and his shop. I found him on the internet after you all mentioned Zaino. If you are in the Bay Area his website is www.deepreflectionsdetailers.com.

I have a line on the clear bra install and I will let you all know what I learn.
