Today was a very rainy dull day here In eastern PA.

So I took the kids to the local gym ( it has an indoor playzone ) Good fun for almost two hours. Got the kids back in the '8
Is it me or is strapping the kids into the rx-8 just soo much more fun than a regular car???

So .. needing to get a few driving jollys in I ask Audrey (she's 5) if she wants to see what daddy's new car can do. Of course she gives an enthusiastic Yes!

In a wide open section of the parking lot I give the car a few good spins!!
A quick 270' followed by a 180' and the a spin around in reverse.
( very wide open parking lot - in the rain w/ TCS fully disabled )

Well the kids were laughing their asses off !! They friggin loved it ... and I got to have a bit of fun.... but I do feel a bit guilty... not exactly good parenting! :angel:

As long as you're the one paying for the counseling down the road...then who cares! :)

It's ok man.... I don't think that you are a bad parent. My dad used to do all kinds of crap like that when I was little. My favorite was when he would "ramp" our truck. We have relatives that live out in the boonies and on the way there, there is a railroad track which sits about 4 to 5 feet above the road. The road actually kinda ramps up on both sides of the track and dad would always gun it when he got there (he had a little 4-banger mazda b-series truck at the time). Making your kids laugh and have fun makes you a cool dad in my opinion. :)

Probably not high on the list of proper parenting techniques, but fun though.

Hell, I do that all the time for my son. My daughter gets a little scared and my wife would kill me if I did it with her in the car but damn it's fun. My son is 12 and knows what a drift really is. He cart races and many have told me he will be hell on wheels when he start driving but I think by allowing him to race and teaching him what I know it will make him a better driver on the road. Besides, he loves cars so much it will kill him I take his car away for doing something stupid.

He had a BMW 2002 , and an original ('83 i think) VW GTI And I remember there was this one road where he would always make us laugh by jumping the GTI over a hill crest. I don't remember much from his BMW because we diddnt ride in it very much .. wer rode in mommys rabbit.

I remember pegging out my dads 72' Vette. I remember watching him drag race his 75' Formula 400 on base. My dad definately influenced my car addiction.

You're a pretty cool dad. Kids seem cool too, I don't think you would have to worry THAT much down the line. When I was younger, my Father would do similar stuff in a '91 'maro (had a 350). And also, my brother was the same way, but I'm not all...stupid when it comes to driving.

when I was little my dad did some crazy driving acts too... Not too mention the constant cussing at other drivers...

My favorite was when he had one of those big blue GMC vans and he would drive around 35 mph whilst moving the steering wheel back and forth.... Only causing me too slam my body into the sides of the van...

I'm still a whiles from having my own children, but by the time there 16 I know they'll have there favorite sports car. You just have too teach them the value of your actions. And by teaching your children something, your allready ahead of 60% of the U.S. population!

I have almost all the initial D discs and 20 or so best Motoring, and other racing and car related DVD's. I just introduced him to the original cannonball run series last weekend.

When I was about 5 or 6, my grandpa would take me out in his old ex-contractor pickup truck on some bare country road, let me sit in his lap, and steer.

My father definitely influenced my car addiction. He watches Formula 1 racing more religiously than most people go to church.

He's also owned many many cars such as Triumphs, prosches, Panteras, Corvettes and now he has a Shelby Cobra 427 (replica), a 1969 Jaguar and a 2006 Porsche Carrera S.

Surprisingly, we knock heads on many things even when it comes to cars. He loves convertibles. I hate convertibles. He likes to cruise and would never think of going to the race track...I'm the total opposite.

Just be safe out there and make sure you talk to them about it. Still...never stopped me but I did eventually learn to be a responsible driver on my own.

I've taken my kids for doughnuts as well. Your kids need to see you having fun once in a while. All the better if you can share it with them!

My dad used to take us for doughnuts in the snow. I remember it was lots of fun :)

Just let them know that your taking some kind of precautions and I think all is well. Shoot, my dad taught me to drive stick when I was 13. He would occassionally even let me take a spin around the back yard in his car alone when I was that age. Those experiances obviously left a mark on me and from the sounds of it to many others. I think your just adding to some positive memories (as long as they like that kind of thing), which it sounds like they do.

As long as the environment is safe and the kids like it I don't see any problems. I'll ocassionally kick the back end out when there is no traffic and suitable large enough area for safety. My 4 year old gets a kick out of it.

not too long ago my daughter (3 yrs) was in the back after i took her to ballet class. i guess i took one of those small drainage ditch hills a little too fast when she was starting to zone out and she laughed at me and said her belly popped. i didn't realize what she meant until i thought about it and remembered as my dad would do the same thing when he would take us in the RX7. i may have made a few u-turns and do it again for her that day. by the way, she ratted me out to my wife the second we got home.

Def. doesn't make you a bad dad. That is totally b/c of the drinking!

kids are definitely rats!! I had to move the 8 once, so I let my neice sit in the passenger seat as I backed out of the driveway and basically went 1/2 a quiet suburb block. She was so excited and immediately told her parents, which resulted in my brother getting crap from his wife for something I did. Sucker.

I don't think it makes you a bad dad—makes you a cool dad. Besides, kids sense that what you do in an empty parking lot when there's no cars nearby is different than what you'd do in normal driving, don't they?

My 6 year old loves it when I whip around corners, spin the rear pulling out and when the opportunity presents spin a donut.

My wife on the other hand does not enjoy the excitement and does not really like to hear about it.

I've only had the car for 16 days now.

My wife does have the 5 year old totally trained .... she's always saying " slow down daddy - your wasting gas!!"

and when the popo catch you, you can try to worm your way out of social services taking away your kids for chile endangerment!!!!!

My 20 month old now cries when she has to get into our station wagon, because she'd rather ride in Mommy's car. And everytime we're outside working in the garden, she wants me to open the doors so she can crawl around in it and play.

Makes you a VERY good Dad. The sooner one can get their kids in a Kar and out driving - AND practicing spins and what-not...the sooner one can get their kids USED TO how a kar FEELS, the safer drivers the kids will be :)

I had an uncle who used to take me and my siblings out in his car and do full donuts in gravel parking lots. He took me to an autocross event where he dropped a motorcycle on himself from 10 feet in the air. It hasn't turned me into a bad driver. People who are afraid of cars and driving tend to be bad drivers.

Make them laugh till they grow up.
 

I think that making your kids laugh is GOOD! Otherwise roller-coasters are bad.

I let my 8 year old son sit in the passenger seat of a friends all-out modified ice-racer (properly sized helmet, 5 point harness, trusted driver) for a half-hour of practice track time on a frozen lake in mid-winter in Alaska. The kid absolutely LOVED it. Took three weeks for the smile to dissipate.

Putting your kids in a controlled-scary-fun situation (NOT a dangerous situation), when handled correctly, really does build character. He grew up to be an honorable man with almost no fears. (Almost no mechanical abilities, but I think he got that from his mom. :rollingla ).

Anyway... Keep those kids smiling, take them to the go-kart track when you can, hit up a roller coaster occasionally, and by all means, when they are old enough to drive, get them autocrossing.

I have a 4 and 10 year old boy who LOVE sitting in their buckets "racing" seats, and of course I oblige them with some fun stuff. My oldest actually has an old Momo steering wheel of mine that he uses to "steer" the car with me.

Nothing better in this world than hearing your kids giggle uncontrollably.
