If you think the 8's bad, calculate the cost per mile of a girlfriend. :Eyecrazy: It'll make 12 mpg seem cheap!

No and it never made me contemplate selling my 7 in '85, either.

In the year 2029, your kids will ask you -

"When gas was only $5 a gallon, did you drive everywhere, and speed and stuff? Huh, did'ya Huh?....tell us how great it was!"

....and you'll have to say -

"No Son. I drove like a granny, and sold my RX-8, bought a Kia."

The shame will break you, and you will forevermore be a Wussy in their eyes.

Hear me now, and believe me later........

I collected a Camry hybrid myself. Double the mileage, none of the fun.

facebook has ruined me stealth, i wanted to "like" your post.

I'd rather drive it less due to the mpg, but for some reason I don't.

shinka911 03-14-2010 09:38 PM

I don't think you can complain about gas millage until you go FI

I contemplate it all the time. I'm contemplating it so much I can't sleep; I can't eat. In fact, I'm not sure how I'm functioning right now. I hate this car with the white hot passion of a supernova. I read up about the poor gas mileage here on RX-8 Club before I got the car. I knew it wouldn't get great gas mileage when I bought the it. And yet . . . here I sit . . . reading all the threads about how much people hate their RX-8 because of the gas mileage while chugging Mountain Dew so I can stay awake because of the lack of sleep while I continually and constantly contemplate selling the car due to the poor gas mileage that I knew about before I bought the car.

this is where you get a beater car and keep the 8 for weekends.

I drive an RX-7 around 100 miles per day averaging 21-22 mpg. I own a Civic that gets 41 mpg hwy but am about to sell it. Why? It has over 200,000 miles on it and even if I could get $2500, it would still be the difference in gas prices between it and the RX-7 in 2 years. That assumes there would be no added maintenance in that car which there would be. It would be best for me to sell it and take the money and stick it in the RX-7 and then buy another used car. You need to weigh the pros and cons but unless you are already in the market for another car, it probably isn't financial benefical to get rid of it or replace it.

Did you ever consider living on a high hill? That way you could coast the car down hill and then push the car the back up hill when you get to the bottom. You will get better gas mileage than a prius. I figure this answer makes as much sense as your question.

Why not just schedule your commutes with weather patterns, hook a sail to your car, so you can always drive with the wind?

Vyndictive 03-15-2010 11:00 AM

I look at it this way. . . you knew the mpg numbers going in. . . why would it be a factor unless your circumstances changed? Longer commute, moved, etc. ? I guess I just don't understand.

I budgeted my monthly gas use and plugged in $4/gallon and added in my car payment and insurance when I bought my '04 in '07.

With the money that I've saved with gas not being 4 bucks a gallon I've bought a ton of stupid mods, a motorcycle, and most recently, a beater Bronco to drive in the winter.

That said: The bronco gets 13mpg if I'm lucky. 9 Around town. . . I should sell it right? Well... It doesn't cost anything to insure, doesn't need premium, and requires nearly no maintenance.

But I only drive about 20 miles round trip for work 5 days/week.

However, if you don't look at the fuel premium as a "fun tax", then I can see where you're coming from. If you're not enjoying your 8 enough to justify the low MPG.... I'd sell it. Its all about what you value and what your priorities are.

Fun cheap and practical puts you into the "hot hatch" segment for sure.
