Do you fit well in your RX-8?

I'm just curious how well people fit in their RX-8. I'm a tall person (6'4") and have a tough time fitting into anything - clothes, airplanes, cars, you name it.

The RX-8 is a little tight for me but not any more tight than my BMW Z4 I used to own - in fact I feel that I fit better in the RX-8 than the Z4. Anyhow, I love to drive my RX-8 and stay pretty comfortable after long drives and I don't feel that my height negatively affects my ability to drive the car well.

So this post is not a complaint from me but more of a curiosity about how tall people feel they fit into their RX-8.

So, how well do you feel you fit in your RX-8?
How does the 8 (as far as how well you fit) compare to other sport cars you own or have owned?

Oh, and thanks for reading/replying to my crazy-ass question!

Razz1 08-23-2007 12:04 AM

I wish they came with Recaro seats among other things.

DOMINION 08-23-2007 12:06 AM

Its a small car. My firend is 6' and has a hard time not hitting his head when he gets in his car.

chickenwafer 08-23-2007 12:16 AM

I'm 6' 7" and I fit just fine, but the seat has to be reclined "gansta" style and I don't have a sunroof. I rode in a friends 8 with the sunroof and my head stuck through the sunroof! So I had to recline the seat wayyyy back.

I wish the seats were "stronger" tho. I carry a good amount of weight (pretty spead out tho) but in twisty mountain runs the side bolsters of the seat will flex.

Other than that, I love the driving ergos of the car. Fits me fine.

EDIT: just realized you live in Glenny??! You should look up AZMC (Arizona Mazda Club at www.azmazdaclub.com) and come to some of our meets. We're going to a drift event/car show in Tuscon this Saturday

Brettus 08-23-2007 12:21 AM

I'm 6'2" and find that the sterring wheel is too away when I have the seat in the right position for my feet.

Howard 08-23-2007 12:43 AM

I fit pretty well and I am 6'2"' and have the sun roof. Another 1-2" of head room would be nice though.

I am really curios to know how going from a Z4 to a RX8 was. Z4s seem like pretty nice cars. How does handling compare? What about pickup? I know the Z4 is faster I just mean how it feels not it's actual performance figures.

Aipex8 08-23-2007 12:45 AM

I'm 6'1" and I fit perfectly in the car. I did have to search out a sport model when shopping for it though, as when test driving a car with a sunroof my hair just brushed the roof, so probably less than an inch with the seat in the optimal position.

Silver_Surfer 08-23-2007 01:02 AM

5'6":)

Phayen 08-23-2007 01:03 AM

I'm 6'1" and fit pretty well. Wish I had another 2" above me so the sunroof didn't mess up my hair before work.

TopGear8 08-23-2007 01:09 AM

I'm about 5'9" and i fit perfectly. it feels like the seat was molded from my body. i love it. i've driven the new 335i TT. and i love the fit of my 8 much better, it's a much more...firm..fit, i drove the BMW around a track and felt like i was flying around in it, my 8 feels like i'm part of the car. Although BMW's are known as "Drivers cars" I like the feel of the 8 much more.

RotaryP7 08-23-2007 01:11 AM

I'm 6'3. No problems whatsoever.. Except when someones behind me.. That's when the fun starts..

delhi 08-23-2007 01:52 AM

fits me perfectly. The 8's seat is superb. Just wished it has more grip. But it's leather after all...

Fortunate Few 08-23-2007 01:59 AM

im 5,7 or 5,8 i fit perfectly.

thats why you get a Shinka with the alcantera/leather... you could roll the car and not slide in the seat! :p:

Rx8-13b 08-23-2007 02:26 AM

im asian lol, and around 5'9, pretty short, but..yet my hair touches the top =.=.....kinda gets annoying at times, anybody same problem? lol

Nopstnz8 08-23-2007 02:30 AM

I'm 5'6 and I fit perfectly. One of my friends who is 6'2 tried to sit in it and hit his head on the roof.

kvndoom 08-23-2007 04:01 AM

I'm 6'2 and I fit fine. Have to have the seat all the way down, but that's no big deal. Only thing I really wish for is a telescoping wheel. My 6 has that, and man, it makes a HUGE difference when you have grasshopper legs.

effie 08-23-2007 05:18 AM

5'9 and i fit perfectly in my 8....

1RX8LVR 08-23-2007 05:37 AM

I'm 5'1 on a good day and I can see over the dash board perfect. =)

Ben98gs 08-23-2007 06:00 AM

6'4" and have to recline the seat a tad to keep from having my head hit the headliner.

New Yorker 08-23-2007 07:34 AM

You'll find some more responses in this older thread: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...w+tall+are+you

Actually, if you're around 5' 10" or over, it's not so much 'height' that determines how well you fit—it's inseam! Two people of the same height can fit very differently, depending on how their height is 'divided up':
Long legs, short upper body = good.
Short legs, long upper body = not so good.

(Of course, if you're 6'7", it prob doesn't matter how you're divided up. :))

Easy_E1 08-23-2007 07:40 AM

I'm 6'6" and I fit nicely. Sat in the car for 11 hours once and no problems. JUst have to recline the seat and put it all the way down. Comfy cozy. Now from what I heard a sunroof is a different story for tall people.

w0rm 08-23-2007 07:44 AM

6'3 with GT and sunroof package.. I have to run the seats 'gangsta style' as someone else mentioned above and I still have barely any clearance. I'm used to it though and the seats fit me well.

It was the potential dealbreaker when I was looking at the 8, had to do a few test drives to figure out a way to sit in the damn thing. Now I'm happy though!

mysql101 08-23-2007 07:47 AM

I imagine most posts will be positive, afterall, if you didn't like the fit in the car, you wouldn't have bought it :)

I'm used to having some head room, so it felt a bit weird to have the roof a half inch over my head, but I got used to it. Half an inch, or 3 feet away, it doesn't matter as long as I don't have to tilt my head to fit :)

And forget it, if I tried to have the seat straight up. It must be reclined to work.

WoodsOfGreenRx8 08-23-2007 07:57 AM

I also have to recline a bit. Being about 6'4.. The only thing that bugs me is do to this, I have a pretty big blind spot behind the rear-view mirror when looking forward. Sometimes I think you could hide a full car behind it.. ha.. Ok, exaggerating, but all the same.. Still a bit annoying.

sonicblue6 08-23-2007 08:37 AM

I'm 6' and, with my sunroof, I have to be very careful about my seat placement in order to be comfortable, not too far away, but not have my head hitting the sunroof trim, either. Passsengers have it much easier because they can just recline way back - a good friend of mine is a big 6'3" or so, and he just racks the seat all the way back and he's good.

mtrevino 08-23-2007 09:00 AM

I'm 6 foot 3 inches, 185 punds and I fit perfectly. I have slightly longer legs than body. I have a base 8, and don't "recline" the seats. I have about an 1 or 2 of clearance room.

Not too many people can sit behind me, though I have crammed 4 people in my 8 a few times. :) I've even sat in the back once, and I fit okay.

Rems31 08-23-2007 09:18 AM

Yes

hough2696 08-23-2007 09:23 AM

I guess I'm tall for a girl, 5'9", but I love the way my seat gives me a "hug like" security (damn that sounds girly). I sit pretty far back, but not gangsta style, on account of the long legs.

dhill1921 08-23-2007 09:54 AM

I am 5'10" and the fit is perfect for me, especially after owning a 06 MX5. It would be cramped if someone had to sit behind me.

rglbegl 08-23-2007 10:50 AM

The seat needs to be smaller. Less width. The side bolsters do nothing for me

6'1" - skinny as a rail

I like long legs........:yumyum:

kersh4w 08-23-2007 11:24 AM

im 5'10", fit perfectly. my gf is 5'7", and she loves the fit as well.

Design1stCode2nd 08-23-2007 11:27 AM

Only 5'8" and I'm about an inch away from hitting my head. Now idea how you 6+ footers do it unless you have long arms and can recline the seat alot.

GalaxieFiveHundred 08-23-2007 11:30 AM

6' 1" and more than enough room. I like the seat reclined a bit, yet notch it up when our kids are in back, and still very comfortable. Of note, just got back from a four-day getaway with wife and both daughters and the car worked out great. First big driving trip in the 8 with all four of us as we typically would use wife's Honda Pilot for such a trip. Packed as if we were flying with carry-on luggage only and had more than enough room for everything. The auxilliary power outlet kept their GameBoys and DVD player humming along nicely. This car continues to amaze me.

Jedi54 08-23-2007 11:41 AM

6'6 WITH sunroof and I fit.
Could I be more comfortable in another car? CERTAINLY but once I got used to having my seat reclined "gangsta" style everything's been good.
The only complaint I have is from time to time when I check my blind spot on the left side, my hair rubs on the part of the ceiling that dips down a bit.

Socket7 08-23-2007 12:03 PM

Compared to the my old accord, it fits like a glove,

i'm short though 5'6, and have to have the seat pretty far forward, making the steering wheel a bit close. It's fine if I remind myself to sit back into the seat, but normally I'm leaning forward. Perhaps my 8 will break me of this habit.

I agree, for those of us who are skinny, narrower would be better. (Although here in the Northeast, the wider seats do allow you to sit comfortably in winter wearing a thick down jacket. But I'd still rather have narrower.)

PerformRX-8 08-23-2007 01:13 PM

6'2 i fit comfortably, just wish i didn't have a sunroof

salveya 08-23-2007 01:19 PM

I'm 6'4, and narrow and I fit well. Since my legs are long I wish the seat went back just a couple inches more, but I love driving my 8.

The Z4 had a little more torque all around but handled about the same as the 8 (which is great handling). For the money, the RX-8 is fantastic. The Z4 is nice but not $20K nicer if you know what I mean.

the only reason why its more expensive is the fact that it has BMW on the car. *'s handling is superb

I didn't realize that the sunroof option made a 2" difference until *after* I bought one - oh well. It does make it a little tighter but for me I would rather have the sunroof than more headroom.

And more expensive to repair!! BMW == Bring My Wallet

Shini 08-23-2007 02:24 PM

5'9 and I fit fine :)

d j 08-23-2007 02:48 PM

5'9"/170 lbs.
...no problems

Josche 08-23-2007 08:58 PM

6'2" with sunroof. I wish there was a telescoping wheel because with my feet just right on the pedals my arms have to reach a bit for the wheel.

I used to have hair on headliner problems but a few adjustments fixed that (the power seat is useful in that regard).

I've even been able to drive around town with a 6' passenger behind me, but it wasn't very comfy for either of us.

I'm a little too slim for the bolsters to be very effective.
