Do others think your high beams are on?

I've noticed lately that when I drive at night, inevitably at least one person in an oncoming car will flash their brights at me as if to tell me to turn my high beams off. I know my high beams are not on, so it's getting downright annoying having all these people flash their brights at me! Plus I don't like the feeling that I'm pissing off other drivers around me all the time. I've never seen another RX-8 on the road at night, so I don't know how bright our lights look to other drivers. Anyone else having this problem? :(

Yes, quite alot, especially at night and when at a steep angle. At times its that frustrating, I'll flash my 'actual' high beams.

RX-GR8 11-14-2003 10:24 PM

ok i have this problem too. but some people leave their high beams on so as to annoy me and i then turn mine on too and leave them on to say i don't even have them on.

It's happened to me a couple of times in my 8. Actually, it happened when I had the BMW before -- which also had HID lights. Maybe folks still aren't used to the brightness of the HIDs.

Design rules here in Australia state that Xenon systems must have both cleaning systems and self levelling headlights in order to avoid this kind of thing... guess that's another thing you guys missed out on (with the headlight cleaners)

rxeightr 11-15-2003 07:25 AM

I have only had one oncoming vehicle flash their lights at me so far.

loco4rx8 11-15-2003 08:55 AM

I haven't gotten it in the RX-8 but I've gotten that in just about any vehicle I've driven. People are idiots some times. If you're going to flash your brights at someone, you better be sure! I just turn my actual high beams on them and then they feel really stupid.

well i havent actually been high beamed by others...but my friends think im high beaming them..but i told them it was the self-leveling. =P If you do see another rx-8 at night the lights look really bright which some might think they are in high beam mode.

frogzapper.....get this on my MX5 and solve it by just setting the manual headlight levelling down a notch and now I don't get flashed. Still gives excellent lighting ahead from the drivers perspective.

Not sure though as to the US spec RX8s as in UK we get self levelling on the High power (as it uses xenons) but manual on the lower power. Therefore I assume you may have a thumb dial on the dash to adjust this?

Hope this helps

Cheers

I have the regular halogen projection lamps and have had absolutely no problem with people flashing me. It hasn't happened once yet. The lamps are very nice and bright too including rainstorms. I like them.

I haven't had it happen yet. I've actually faced an oncoming 8, and I thought it had fake HIDs because they were so aimed so low they didn't blind me. The headlights on this car are aimed wonderfully. The only complaint I've heard was from my husband, and I blinded him from behind on a hill that I was going up and he had just crested. But that's it.

Hasn't happened to me yet, but it's been only a month with limited night driving. I followed a friend in her '03 Saleen Mustang on a long curvy mountain road (leaving Yosemite) recently, and she said the headlights never once hit her rear-view mirrors. I could see where they cut off just under her backlight.

I think the cut-off on my HIDs is pretty much spot-on. And I love the way the high beams fill in the "upper half" perfectly.

I've had one or two flashes and it drives me crazy because some people flash when you have a headlight out so when I get a flash I think my headlight is out

SethMcMichael 11-18-2003 01:05 AM

This is what you do if someone flashes you when you have your regular light on.

1. Turn you brights on.

2. Turn around and follow them for a couple of miles, continue to leave your bright on.

This will eventually show them that you (we) dont drive with are brights on.;) :p

sup3rbad 11-18-2003 03:22 AM

I have the regular non-xenon lights and my friends told me they were really bright. i checked them out myself and damn... they're bright. I just wanted to share.

wakeech 11-18-2003 04:07 AM

the only time i ever flash people my brights is when (during the day) i'm trying to make an acknowledgement of them (letting them into the lane or something) without using the horn, or when thoughtless assholes drive in the passing lane !!!! <- my #1 pet peeve on the road.

Been flahsed too. :) uhhhhh....not that kinda flashing....get your minds out of the gutters. :D
