Different Years

Im purchasing a mazda rx8

but I'm unclear as to which year to buy

normally you dont want to buy the 04 because it was the first verison
and ive heard the 05 has problems

so is a 06 safe or has there been issues with that year as well?

Thanks

Welcome!

During the first year out, there were many recalls issued, and many parts updated. You are most at risk for powertrain issues on the 2004s, and it took until mid-2005 for most ofther cosmetic/annoying issues to be addressed. 2006-08 essentially remained the same. Your risk for having issues with the earlier years is solely dependant on how quickly the original owners had the recalls performed, if at all. I'd recommend 2005 or later, and be sure take a look at a few of the cosmetic differences between the 04-05 and 06-08 (seat material, shiny trim, etc.) and see if it matters to you.

Keep in mind though, that buying a newer year does not guarantee that you won't have issues, and you might be able to get a fabulous deal on 04s these days that would justify a few annoyances. Just pay attention to the warranty status. You need to be covered by the 4yr/50k limited warranty for cosmetic problems to be covered. They get expensive quick without it, so if things like fogged lights would bother you, keep that in mind. Essentially all RX-8s still have a Powertrain (5yr/60k) and an Engine (8yr/100k) warranty left.
