That's not under load. I'm not terribly impressed, the very first rotary prototypes were able to run those sorts of revs for a day or so. (possibly longer, I don't remember reading about any where they went 'till it broke) They probably mean 3-4hours X 25 = 3-4 days. The 3rd Gen RX-7's 13B-REW ran for 6 months at 8000rpm and another alternating between 7-8k.

Here's what I got, not from my normal sources, but a very reliable source indeed.
The RENESIS Engine was run under laod for the equivalent of 25 consecutive INDY 500 Races at...are you ready?... 17,000RPM. WOW!
The same engine was then installed into an employees car in Japan (obviously not an RX-8) and driven in all kinds of conditions including stop * go, city and highway for an additioanl 100,000 miles.
NOT A SINGLE FAILURE!:D :p :) :D :p :) :D :p :)

For those of us who might be harboring lingering doubts about the reliability of rotary engines..................

FORGEDDABOUTIT!!!!!!!!

well, he DID say it was under load... i agree that unloaded, this RPM number would be less impressive, but STILL!! how many production piston engines can hit 17k rpm for any amount of time, unloaded or not, with all appropriate timing adjustments necessary, and stay in one piece?? none as inexpensive as the RENESIS, i guarantee it... maybe none at all...

I most certainly agree with you on that one.
