Did i got ripped off?

I went to a local auto shop today and they were
Kind and honest. I had engine oil and filter(they claimed it is a premeium oil and filter), tire rotation, cabin air filter change, transmission fluid change, fog light bulb change(i had the part) and full inspection...costed me 300 bucks. What do you guys think?

monchie 04-30-2011 05:08 PM

It sounded and looked okay to me. Oil change on my car is already costing me almost $50, and that's not even premium brand. All of that for $300 including labor is pretty cheap if you ask me. That is a bargain at these days.

Twiztog43 04-30-2011 06:33 PM

seems about right. now if you brought your own trans fluid, oil, oil filter bulb and cabin filter, it wouldn't cost that much.

how is it costing you $50?

i do my own oil changes and usually a 5qt jug of castrol gtx 5w30 + oil filter cost around $20

So you got tired of oiling guns in the Army, right?:rollingla

dozer 04-30-2011 07:25 PM

wow, you couldve saved a lot of money, if you wouldve done all that yourself...

nycgps 04-30-2011 07:29 PM

300 bucks ? ...

I can probably do it all for you for around 100-150 ~ depends on what you want (brand wise). and that includes labor.

full inspection ... right, what they do? look at the pads WOW that cost any money ? lmao.

in the other words YES, you got RIPPED,BIG TIME.

YaXMaNGTO 04-30-2011 07:32 PM

U did got ripped off lulz teh premeium oil

40w8 04-30-2011 07:33 PM

As long as I can breathe and crawl, I will forever pour my own oil into the engine by myself.

HotBrothers 04-30-2011 07:46 PM

some ppl like to do it their own... some ppl not... i personally dont like tune-up my car because i am not good at it and it might cause more money if i screw it up...so why meddle monchie?

paimon.soror 04-30-2011 08:04 PM

Its really not that hard to change your own oil, takes no more than 30 minutes even if it was your first time, costs a fraction of what it would at JiffyCrap.

Ever think to yourself "hey, i wonder how jiffy lube knows what kind of oil and filter my car really uses?"

Well they look at the cap, 5w-20 which is shit for our cars, and then when they remove the filter they compare sizes to what is on the shelf, and pop a pennzoil piece of shit filter on.

Oil and Filter would cost you roughly 30 bucks at autozone for quality oil and a quality filter
tranny fluid would cost you about 26 at amazon
the fog bulb you already had so ...
cabin air filter costs about 13 for the part itself
tire rotation could be done in your garage real easy for free
and a full inspection would cost about 30 bucks

so we are talking roughly 100 bucks.

Spend a solid 100 for a good set of jackstands and a jack and you are at 200 bucks now, still cheaper

So technically you got ripped off, but, like you said, you kept your hands clean and didn't have to worry about the know-how. Its the price you pay for that luxury

yiksing 05-01-2011 12:28 AM

you got ripped off big time

Oil and Filter would cost you roughly 30 bucks at autozone for quality oil and a quality filter
That's what my dealer charges for an oil change. Castrol GTX, OEM Mazda filter. Installed...I sit in the customer lounge reading or working on my laptop while they get dirty.

cabin air filter costs about 13 for the part itself
It sells for two or three times that...I forget exactly. But installing it is under 5 minutes.

tire rotation could be done in your garage real easy for free
$20 at my dealer. And I save my back.

and a full inspection would cost about 30 bucks
What's wrong with Mazda's free full circle inspection?

I'd say you got ripped off if you dont mind doing it yourself... Most places are like that. Not to threadjack, but just today my wife's Monte Carlo needed new pads on the front, so I got a quote from Pepboys: $200 parts and labor before taxes. Instead, I went to Autozone and bought the pads and did it myself... for $30.

But again, if you dont mind speding money to have someone else do it, that's your choice.

cheapest I've seen is 9.99 after MIR with filter...

Mazda oem filter is good(made by Denso) I have a bunch of those cuz it cost me 4 bux each, I bought enough to last the life of the car (I have like 2 dozen of it, yep)

but for my other cars I would use WiX or K&N or Mobil1. WiX has best filtration rate (I remember), K&N is the easiest to work with. Mobil1 filter I can usually get it with oil change special and the quality is pretty good (made by Champion labs I think)

it depends on which type, there are 2 types of cabin filter for Rx-8. one is regular "dust" paper filter. the other one is aldehyde filter that filters pollens and other harmful stuff.

Paper filter is cheap and you can get them anywhere.
aldehyde filter on the other hand, can only get them thru Mazda (as far as I know).

I have a feeling Mazda sold you paper filter Ken, as the aldehyde filter cost at least 50-60 bux just the filter alone.

$20 at my dealer. And I save my back.
I'm still young so I did it myself and saved 20 bux for my "beer fund" :cwm27:

What's wrong with Mazda's free full circle inspection?

nothing wrong with it, but all these "inspection" are just bs. couple of times they told me I need to replace my tires cuz the thread is low when they're in fact brand new with only couple hundred miles on it ...

Not that it's truly any big deal, but wonder how a non-Mazda shop(and not a parts store) had a cabin air filter laying around on the shelf???? :suspect:
Maybe they ran out and got one, or maybe they took it out and shock it and replaced, or maybe they didn't even drop the glovebox at all????

Before you blast me, he did say " local auto shop".
