Dealership cracked my windsheild putting in new motor
 

So for anyone that has kept up with my postings, I had my
04 6spd MT (36,000miles) at the dealership as it died on the highway july 7th

I pick my car up today, drove about 30 mins, then the sun came out and I notices a foot long crack in the middle of the windsheild from the bottom up about 4inches then curves to the right. As I drove today it continued cracking.

I had left the dealership and it was closed when I noticed so Im taking it back to them on monday.

What could have caused this?
Im shocked!

I know I am going to have the most difficult time proving this, but I always inspect my windsheild because I have two small chips on the top that I wanted to have fixed. Then I get it back and Im like WTF!!!!

I had a new motor installed, and competely new intake manifold installed.

Would they have removed the hood?
Could they have hit it that way and cracked it?

Like honestly, not to cause issues, but I know 100% it happened while at the dealership. The car was at the shop 1 month to todays date while they tried everything to find the problem before changing the motor.

And now my engine light came on 50k after leaving the dealer, so I need to take it back monday.

I don't know what to think, this is tough!

You made a HUGE mistake by not thoroughly inspecting ur car prior to leaving the dealership. Do you honestly believe that you can take it off the lot, keep it for a weekend and THEN go back and say , "Hey, you guys cracked my windshield last Friday, i want it replaced"

It sux bad man and im not hatin, but thats the reality. If you dont catch it at pickup or like right afterwards, they arent gonna be liable, unless they are nice enough to take blame (highly doubt it) for something one of their techs did.

good luck your going to need it. You had it for the weekend they are just going to say that you must have hit some thing after you left.

You have support for this. A broken windshield is covered by your comprehensive insurance. If the dealer does not make good, put in an insurance claim. Tell your insurance company when and where it happened.

The claim won't count against you. You may be out your deductable (which is usually less than your collision deductable), but will get it back if the insurance company goes after the dealer.

FWIW, I've had cars damaged by repair shops and gone back the next day after finding it. They've usually acknowledged what they did, and made good on it.

take Ken's advise. Its very dangerous to drive around with a cracked front windshield

First off ask if they were aware of it. Don't come in all huffy puffy and expect them to want to fix it. Being polite has much more leverage than coming in with an angry voice. ;)

It is possible that some vandal came though the dealership parking lot or something fell out of a plane overhead. :lol:

It takes a lot of force to crack a windshield, more than you would expect. If someone did hit the window they would be aware of when it happened.

Well the thing about the crack is there is no main point of contact, you know like where a chip hit it and then started cracking

I did a full inspection of my car and found a scratch on the top of the hood, which I assume they left a tool on it and moved it and scratched it. Im ok with that because I can get it out.

The windsheild thing, like honestly, I never even considered inspecting it, and it did not look cracked, it wasnt until I hit the sun and seen it's glare.
I wont go to the dealer all mad, I know how it goes. Im more shocked then anything because I know I'm pretty much screwed.

I just cant think of what they could have done to break the windsheild, it looks like they must have hit the bottom of the glass somehow and it cracked upwards.

Because they were closed, I called and left them a message so at least they know it was within 10-20 minutes after getting my car.

yeah it depends on how nice the dealer ppl r because it was a weekend till they will c it so i'm not sure at all

When you picked it up there was a shock in temperture to the glass because you used the A/C.

It has happened to a few members here.

Wow. Before trying to quote a physics term or concept, get a clue. It helps keep a semblance of credibility.

even if the windshield was that hot... I dont think the 8's AC cools off quick enough for that to even be a possibility. My car sits in the sun in 100 degree weather frequently and it takes 10-15 minutes before the car is even reasonably comfortable once I start driving it again.

Basically, I hope that idea was a joke, because even though I might be wrong, I'm rather sure that is not a possibility.

Riddle me this Batman, how is it that you drove 30 miles without noticing a crack in your windshield the size of Rosie O'Donnell's left cheek?

I know if florida, insurance is required by law to fix a windshield for free. I'm not sure how many times you can claim it, but i know at least the first time is 100% free.

i don't think there is a limit.

my RV window got broken from a rock on the road. Ins fixed it for free. It's a $1000 window.

Anyway, the installer said there's a guy who has a dirt road to his house and he gets his windows replaced once or twice a year on his RV, always free.

Man you Americans are lucky!!!!

It would cost me about 600-800 dollars for a new windsheild.
I just got back from the dealership, and left the car with them.
So far so good, we'll see what happens when the bill comes in but they seemed to be very understanding of the issue which makes me extremely happy!

This dealership is probably the deciding factor on keeping my RX-8 and so far.... its sticking with me :)

It was a vertical crack 4 inches high then split to the left. When I noticed it, it was about 6 inches in total, now its over 2 feet across.

Why I didnt notice it, is simple. A vertical crack is hard to see if your not looking for it, especailly if your not expecting it. Once it cracked horizontal the sun blinded me from it and I was quickly informed!

Its all good. Dealer recognized they had done it, and are installing a new one for free. I am extremely happy!

Let me rephrase this, because I'm sure not many people get this luck...
I am extreeeeeeeeemmmmmmely amazingly happy!
Because they could have easily said "Go F*** Urself" we didnt do it, even though, honestly, it did happen there. But anyways, I'm sticking with these guys :) They'll get lots of service from me come january when the warranty runs out and my car dies :banghead:

RRRriiiight. Unless your a/c fills the cabin with liquid nitrogen, thats complete BS. The heat CAN help it along if its already cracked, but its not gunna cause a crack.

Usually those cracks start at the end of a glass out of sight, when the car is tweaked (put on lift, hard corners, anything that twists the car a bit) the crack will shoot across like wildfire. The shop could have hit the bottom of the windshield with a tool, hoist, etc., or you may have caught a rock and not noticed it. It may have got worse when the car was on the lift, but I still advise blaming the dealer. Its cheaper to replace it yourself than getting insurance to do it 90% of the time.
