Dealer overfill by putting the correct amount?
 

k, so I took my car for an oil change today. bought 5 qt's Castrol GTX 5W20. everything went well untill I checked the oil in front of the service rep. it was about 1/3 - 1/2 of an inch over the H hole on my SII oil stick.

so I asked them how much oil they put into the engine, they showed me whats left in that 5qt jar was about 0.5 qt left, so they put 4.5qt (said 4.6qt in the manual).

so then I asked if they could drain the oil out a little, they told me it'll be fine and they will be responsible for any damages.

time to do my own oil changes I think.:anger:

update, my cars been having warm starting problems. I need to crank abit longer to get it started when warm.

so I took out the MAF, found oil in my air-intake, that explains why I could smell burning oil sometimes.

Holy crap I saw your car at Woodhouse the other day. You have 6 county plates right?
I noticed I'm always over by that much after they change mine too, I think I read on here that it's not a big deal but I could be wrong. I just had them install my aero kit when I seen your car there.

Maybe it wasn't you, I thought it was an older one that I seen.

Every time I get my oil changed at a shop they do this.

Don't worry about it. It's not like we have a crankshaft that can foam the oil if you overfill it a bit. Now if they put in 2 quarts extra....

Think of it as an extra week of not having to check your oil.

4 quart is already too much. normal drain n fill use no more than 3.8 quarts of oil

I went to woodhouse the other day to have my cat replaced.


It seems to be lower when cold. This is weird cuz I thought it would be higher. I tried to suck some out through the oil stick tube. No chance or I could be doing it wrong.

S2's have bigger sump I think. It could be just 0.1 quart over. But getting oil inside the intake would be bad.

am I part of the failed ?. .... ... .. . .. . . .....

Were they going by the amount of oil that the newer dual-oil-cooler engines require? The older engines have a lower capacity because they only have a single oil cooler.

Rotaries don't have cylinder heads for the oil to be sprayed all over the inside of, so there's no place for the oil to "hide" when the engine's running. And of course, it expands a little when it gets hot, so there's why it's the opposite of what you expected.

My dealer ALWAYS overfills the engine. Looks like they don't even use the dipstick for oil level check when changing the oil.

Had to work on a local's car last weekend when the dealer overfilled the oil.
The oil was all the way down the upper intake manifold.
While I had that off we sprayed cleaner onto the SSV and cycled it too because we've seen this valve stick from overfilling oil.

So you might want to inspect further downstream.
You'll probably have to clean the throttle body valve.
I just remove the four bolts to the throttle body to clean it easier.
Then with the throttle body removed, stick your finger into the upper intake manifold and feel around.
If it feels moist and gritty (plus your finger is black), you should remove and clean that too.

Sucks man. I'd take it back, show them what you found and make them clean it.

I used to do my own oil changes, but the place I go to now, get's it done in 15mins, while I'm sitting in my car. Boom, I'm outta there.

HA... dealer f*cked up from overfilling, so there was no way I was going to recommend that he take it back for them to f*ck something else up.
I've had the UIM off many times so it wasn't a big deal to do it again for him.
Plus it gives him a peace-of-mind knowing it was done correctly and with care.

I hope you don't regret that statement. Cross your fingers, cause it takes less than 15 minutes to put too much oil in whether your sitting in that car or not! :Peace:

While your dealer may have overfilled a tad, I remember reading a thread on this topic a few years ago and it was standard practice and specified in system how much oil the tech was to put in. That amount was a slight overfill.

thats exactly what I told them to check the dipstick not to go by the manual.

Naw, I trust these guys. I know the owner, the mechanic and the techs. I'm just getting too lazy nowadays to do it myself. Old age.

I was the one who had the dealership overfill and Jon came over and helped me clean up their mess. I would get it apart now while it is fresh before it gets baked on. We caught mine pretty early and it really wasn't hard to get any of the oily grit off. I'm going back to doing my own oil changes now. This is the one time I decided not to so that it would be easier to prove I had done my oil changes should I ever have apply for the new engine warranty. I think from now on i'm just going to video tape the oil draining from my car as well as my odometer to prove i did the change. Thank you Jon for coming over and helping clean out my upper manifold, throttle body etc.... :bowdown:

should I take it back and let them clean it up or what?
