Dealer Fee?

Anyone out there being slapped with a Dealer Fee? Mine's $594!!!

If you haven't asked about it, then I suggest you do. Most dealers won't even disclose the fee until you're sitting at the finance table. Then when you question it, they mention something like, "are you going to break this deal over a couple hundred dollars?"

Any tips on how to negotiate a lower or no cost fee?

Thanks

Hahahah that's CAKE!

Try a $5995 dealer fee.

$5995!!! That's price gouging!!! I thought Mazda was telling dealers not to do that. You're not really paying that are you?

I bet you they also tack on a dealer fee.

What I mean by dealer fee is the additional $200-$500 they add to cover their "paperwork and misc" charges. This fee is usually pre-printed on the purchase order or paperwork somewhere. All dealers say it's not negotiable, but in reality it is. It's pure profit to the dealer.

That is absolutely correct. This will be my second Mazda from the same dealer, same sales guy, but I told him point blank..."I will buy the RX-8 from you for MSRP+tax+tag and that's it....NO DEALER FEES" to which he still tried to say that he didn't think management would do it, so he was gone for a few minutes "to discuss it with his manager" and came back saying "I don't know how, but he agreed!" and crossed it out on the buyers order. Funny how that works huh?!? ;)

If a dealer springs it on you at the last minute and says the typical line of "you're not going to let this car go over a couple hundred dollars are you?" just turn right around and say "you mean YOU'RE not going to let a SALE and a FUTURE CUSTOMER go over a couple hundred dollars are YOU?" wait 30 seconds, see what they have to say and if they are still reluctant, get up like you're going to leave. 9 times out of 10, they will ask you to sit back down and will give you the price break. The one remaining time, you will actually have to leave the dealer, and you have a 50/50 chance they will call you on the phone and agree or you will have to pay the fee if you REALLY want the car.

You just gotta deal! :D

Oh you mean docs or tax and tags.. That price really depends on your state.. I thought you meant the additional BS of "Adjusted Market Value" or "Dealer Adjustment"...

Yes, the dealers here have the docs (tax tag) + their "Adjusted Market Value" That AMV is usually $3000-6000!

Paradise is craaaaazy......

I'm just going to have to wait till the car actually arrives.. because my dealer cant give me a price because they dont know how much the car is... HAHA what a crock.

Kinda. The doc fee is usually replaced by the Dealer Fee. It was defined to me as paying for the person who types up the forms, the person who goes to the DMV for your tags, the person who washes and preps the vehicle for delivery, and dealer profit. All those cost should come out of the profit the dealer is making when selling you the car, not added as extra on top of the selling price.

Tax and tags are still extra. So when the dealer quotes me an "Out the Door Price" he means, vehicle + tax + tags + dealer fee and in some cases + adjusted market value.

Price gouging is the "Adjusted Market Value" added to a car. This is bogus as is the Dealer Fee. If you have a dealer that has a $5000 mark-up, just show up one day with 30k cash or a pre-approved loan and I'll bet you they'll sell the RX-8 for MSRP.

Yup, I plan to do that.. hopefully I can secure my loan before hand so I whip out the big guns if need be.

If my dealer trys to tack on the "dealer paperwork fee" then I'm going to try to have them take it off and if they say they have to because they have to pay the person for all that junk, then I will tell them that I will pay it if they give me the "dealer hold back" that they are suppose to use to take care of the car while on the lot between when they get it and when it sells. Since I will be taking care of the car from Day 1 then I should have that money!!!!!!!!! :D

DTech,

It sounds like my wife went through the same saleman line as you. Since I'm over here in Qatar, my wife did the RX-8 shopping. She told the saleman that we will pay only MSRP + tax + tag. Nothing else. He started with the line that they will have to add on a dealer fee of, I believe it was $500. She said no way will we get the car. On the buyer's order they "sold" the car for $500 less than MSRP and then added in their $500 dealer fee. Go figure. So we ended up paying right at MSRP ($33,100) with the dealer fee included.
