Daily Driven RX8s
How many here drive their RX8s as their daily drivers? How far do you travel per day, how many miles on the car and what types of maintenence have you performed on it (aside from the normal oil changes).
|
Since the first of the new year, I have only gone 3 days without driving my 8. I now have 10850 miles on the odometer, and if u divide that by about 139 days since the new year, that's an average of 78 miles per day, everyday..
Since then, I have had three oil changes, one tire rotation, one airbag recall service, 12 car washes, and installed an intake. |
I drive it every day. I have 5600 miles on it since November 23, 2003. I have changed the oil twice. No other maintenance except wash and wax. Had both recalls done, the air conditioning "fix" and M flash. Dealer painted my rotor(brake) hubs due to rust stains. That is about it as far as the question goes.

My '8 is my daily driver. My commute used to be 23 miles each way, since three months ago it's now 12 miles each way. I got the car late July '03 and it's got 13500 miles on it at the moment. The only maintenance done has been regular oil changes and the recalls which have been on the older production cars (oilpan, airbag, etc.)
I've had no issues with flooding or anything like that - and I'm going to get the AC looked at next oil change as well as getting the PCM updated from L to M. So far it's been a reliable and fun steed indeed. |
I have had mine since Dec. and it has right at 9000 miles. It is about a 20 mile drive to work at mazda.
|
I'm trying to figure out if my commuting would measure up to a first generation RX8...or wait for the next year's model. I drive 171 miles roundtrip every work day with my Honda.
|
Daily driver here. 20mi each way with 3200 miles so far. 1 oil change. Sun visor (driver side) replaced.
I couldn't be happier. |
8200 miles since Jan 31 - daily driver.
Miles are random - I drive everywhere, yet I have had the car sit for 6 weeks due to travel. 2 oil changes, air bag recall, defog buttons replaced, A/C needed to be evacuated. dag |
Mine is a daily driver and would have it no other way. I just couldn't stand to own a car like this and not be able to partake in it's greatness on a daily basis!
I usualy average at least 40 miles a day with a 12 mile round trip to and from work. I average about 220 miles a week. I now have 6150 miles and usually fill up once a week. I am averaging 17-18 milea a gallon. with about 80 miles a week on highway driving. I have changed the oil twice on my own, had the airbag recall and installed ultra high performance all season radials (Sumitomo HTR+ in 245/40WR18) so I can enjoy this great car 365 days a year! So far I have had ZERO problems with the car, she's never flooded, no cracked switches, no clicking wheels, nada nothing! The only time it was in the shop was for the recall and to get the tires balanced to spec! |
5k since jan 2, ive only got about 10mi to work every day but i find other ways to put miles on it :) nothing special done, the two recalls and oil changes, wax/wash, etc.
i did have to replace the windshield last week. there was an impact point, but it was when the car was parked so that cant really be blamed on driving. |

I can't imagine almost double that. |
14890 miles since October 8, 2003. Oil change every 3000 miles. Check oil myself every 1000. List of mods in my sig, swapped stock tires for winter to dunlop wintersport m3s. Both recalls, M flash, windshield replaced.
And after all that, I love this car! |
Daily use 3 miles.
Occasional road trips. 3 months 1200 miles. One oil change. Recalls done. A/C thing ordered but not installed yet. Wash and waxed (with RejeX, an aviation polymer polish) at least 10 times. Again today because the "love-bugs" are getting bad. The great thing about the RejeX is the bugs rinse off with the hose. Check out www.corrosionx.com. |

Check out www.corrosionx.com. Wow! on pace for a whopping 4800 miles per year. Looks like you spend more time washing it then driving it. HEHE I have about 2600 miles on my car in 2 and a half months driving 20 miles each way to work 4-5 times per week at my day job. I drive about 650 miles a week with two jobs, so I have a 95 vw golf to use for my second job as a disc jockey in NYC. If it's raining and rx8 is clean sitting in garage, I'll take vw to day job. One oil change, two recalls, and a possible a/c fix coming up, but maybe not because it cools ok, and I'm not sure if the part will do anything for me. |

19 days old, just about to break 1000 miles. 8 miles each way to work. no oil changes, but I did check it today:)
2 washes, no waxes. Kissed one curb :( |
My story -- I've been driving the car for 10 months and got 16,000 miles on it. It is definitely my daily ride; I put about 30 miles on daily commuting plus lots of miles around town. I've taken it on a couple of 1000-mile road trips. Had mainly routine maintenance plus tire rotation and had clutch rebuilt (under warranty; it's a long story you can do a search for.) Since I get free maintenance under their settlement with first-increment owners, I follow Schedule 2 in the owners manual, meaning maintenance every 5000 miles. I add a quart of oil in between. Real happy with the car, esp since I taught myself to stop worry about fuel consumption. I get in the mid-16s mpg.

2 months old, about 4200km. Drive it almost every day, but sometimes I use my mom's tiny car (peugeot 106) for the dirty work!
No oil change, just added about half a litre. Wash it every week, two coats of Sonax hard wax. Only scar my babe has is because of a kamikaze insect  (no wax when it happened) its more of a stain actually, damn thing is having its revenge on my car for killing it! |
I drive mine every day, including through the Wisconsin winter. My commute is only about 4 miles each way, but I tend to run a few other errands each day. I got the car last August and have about 10000 miles on it. I change the oil every 2500 miles and keep a good eye on everything else.
|
I drive mine every day. 16000 miles since 10/03. Only problems beside the recalls were a defective a/c, heat temperature control and I'm waiting on the a/c amp, and it flooded once in the winter.

Ask me if I'm happy about the gas prices these few months... The car I'm using now is a 2003 Honda Accord, 4 banger...it has just shy over 56,000 miles on it already. I bought it in November 2002. So...I'm just trying to see how a Mazda would hold up in the commute. |
Originally posted by Blue_Chameleon Nope, I'm not kidding. I wish I was. My one-way drive to work is 85.5 miles....from the time it leaves the garage to the time I park in the parking spot at work. So roundtrip makes it 171 miles....times that by 4 times per week and you get 684 miles per week. So...I'm just trying to see how a Mazda would hold up in the commute. I here ya on that. I drive 600 per week just for work, so close to 700 total. Thank god I have my beater 95 vw golf. With gas prices so deadly, I am certainly putting more miles on the golf then the rx8 since it gets about 28 city and 33 highway mpg. The weak a/c on the rx8 isn't going to help things any, then there's winter. Even so, 10k miles per year will still be easily reached, since I drive about 30k miles per year. With that many miles, it's a good thing you have another car. Not that the rx8 can't last a long time, but the maintanence will destroy you, and the gas consumption will really hurt badly. I'd just share the miles like I do, and add some precious years to your rx8. Enjoy!!! |
wow... i drive 2 miles to school everyday and 2 miles back... i also just do errands, drive into downtown LA or go out to the block or the beach on the weekends. Got my car on May 2nd and have about 990 miles on it. no oils changes... need to add some more oil soon, and washed it about... 5 times already no problems...
|
I drive 85 miles per day. Since 04/15/04 it now has 3300 mi.
I oil change About a dozen washes. Couple of quick waxes. I was getting 21mpg. Got M flash 05/21/04. 90 miles later with mostly city and 50 miles of HIGH (~100mph) speed highway got 18.5 on M. Will continue to check and see if it goes back up to normal of 21 or if it gets better since I had a pre "L" flash before. |

I drive 171 miles roundtrip every work day with my Honda. As gas prices went up, I got a second car (gas saver). Do the math .. 170 miles / 20 mpg = 8.5 Gallons a day ..@ a price of $2.50 = $20 to get to work and back. In a gas-saver it'd be $10. Every now and then I want to sit in my RX-8 while stuck in traffic, so then I take it - otherwise the cheaper one to work. -Peter P.S.: I may have been a bit optimistic with the 20 mpg there :D Chevron 91 gas here in my town was $2.66 yesterday. |
