I went to a Mazda dealer today, because I've been absolutely in love with the 8s since they came out. I finagled a test drive out of the sales guy, and fell in love the instant the door opened. Well, further in love. Unfortunately, being a 19 year old college student, there is absolutely no way for me to afford even a baseline 6-speed 8. I tried explaining to my dad that this is my absolute dream car, and didn't care about the debt it would put me in. Honestly, if I could have any car in the world, it wouldn't be a F1, or a GT, or an Enzo...it would be a fully loaded RX-8. I think the curves of the car actually qualify as sexy. Combined with the near 50/50 dist, the 9,000 rpm redline, and the SICK short-throw, I honestly want to drop out of school and get a full time job just for this car. For now, I have to settle for poring over the brochures.

Youll get there sans_8 it just takes, I just got my 8 a few weeks ago, it was the first time in my life and career that I could justify and afford something like this, Ive been out of college over 15 years now, point being good things come to those who wait, your education is way more important than a car.

way good advice. I've been out of college for 4 years now, and am now buying my 8. Just be patient and think of the positives. When you do graduate, this car can be a graduation present you give yourself. Plus, there will be newer versions, less kinks, more accessories, etc.

ya... i know how u feel man.... i've waited 5 years for my car... just wait and wait and wait... always just looking at the pics... but not i think i'm the luckiest guy in the world... cuz my parents just bought me this rx-8 on suprise... and i'm still in college.. and its my 1st car too.... so now i think back... its SOOO worth the wait.. just show ur parents u making good progress with life and school... i'm Sure sooner or later they'll help u out!!! (but i'm saying on behave of being azn family) TRUST me education is ALWAYS ALWAYS more important then a car!!!!

It's really hard when you want something so much. I always wanted a Porsche and then when I finally could afford one my practical side kicked in. :(

The 8 is a great car and it might seem like a long time but a couple of years of college and you'll be able to afford it and you'll even get the $500 grad rebate!!!!

It will happen... it's better to finish school now and buy the 8 in a couple of years. If you go to work now it will be very hard to finish school, I know. I'm still working on it.

:D Hang in there.... enjoy college, once you start working all you'll do is think about days off, vacations, retirement.... weekends to drive the 8....

Like they said, get the education so that you can afford a nice car, and keep a good driving record.

Wait a year or two and get one used- will be much more affordable for a college student, and you'll still get a great car.

I remember when I graduated from high school. My dad said he would buy me a new car or pay for my college education. It has been 7 years since I graduated high school. I graduated from college and now have been driving an Rx-8 for 6 months and it is all the more satisfying to know that I am paying for it myself. I would advise anyone to stay in and if you are sincere about school and working hard, it will eventually pay off.

Indeed! The 8 is my first car that I bought with only MY NAME on it. Feels damn good to reward myself with such a wonderful car and able to afford it at the same time :) That damn college degree paid off after all, hehe ;)

I do not have a college education.

After high school, I entered the work force. After 2 years I ordered a new vehicle, paying 50% down, and paid it off before owning it for a year.

After 5 years of working I bought my dream car, a '64 Corvette Sting Ray convertible, which I still own.

My rate of pay is much higher than the average for my location. Work ethics account for so much more than a degree.

Get the car:eek:

Youll get it someday. Besides, if you wait a year or two youll probaly get one that looks as good with more horsepower.

Hahhaha, if you change the "8" in your post to a "7" and the "Enzo" to "F-40" then you get EXACTLY my story when I was 19.

Education is EVERYTHING, don't drop out, don't slack off, work your butt off and you'll get to buy exactly what you want before you know it.

I didn't want to start anything about whether or not he should get a college education or not. And I agree hard work is more benefical than a degree. But you can't say that the degree is a bad thing and it can only open doors for him. In the end it is his decision to make and we can only share our experiences. For me it was the right thing to do. For you it seems that you made the best decision. I am just saying that I would not trade a college education for a car that's all. That is my opinion, be it right or wrong.

Hard work ethic + college degree will win almost every time!

And, things one earns and pays for ONESELF are really (REALLY!) all the more pleasureable..............

sans_8, I gotta agree with all the guys here that say get an education first. Trust me, I am in your shoes, I am now 24 and about to get my doctorate (in pharmacy) and I can not tell you how much I have wanted a new car during the entire duration of college. Now with only this year left to go in school it is still an act of self-restraint to not go out and buy a new car. My $0.02 is wait until you can get it for a graduation present to yourself, trust me, it will mean a whole lot more.

I've come to know a few very well-off folks in my time - people who own several 60k+ cars and vacation homes etc.etc.etc... A vast majority of them came to be successful through hard work and innovation rather than having a particular degree of sorts. They all agree that one of the greatest regrets they have in life is not finishing school.
So, now is the time to work towards completing your educational goals. The toys can wait.

I dunno, a car is just that - a car. Ultimately, there will be new models, better and improved engines, handling, etc....... And you'll still be stuck with the debt.

No substitute for a good education. But then again, it's your choice.

Also, think about this - TRAVEL. See the world and expand your horizons. Those experiences will serve you much more later in life than you could imagine.

man you guys are so kind. not quite as kind as i was hoping...i was secretly wishing that one particularly affluent and philanthropic rx-8 owner would help me out. hah just kidding. but thanks anyways =].

You might not believe this about what I am going to say, but here goes.

When I was your age...mind you I am not much older than you (21), I wanted a car....BAD! Did you know what was my absolute dream machine? A Honda Civic SiR (otherwise known as Si for those south of the border). However, things didn't work out as I would have liked because I didn't have enough money and what not. A couple years down the road, my urge to get a car died until I found myself financially stable and I heard of the RX-8. I am so glad I waited, even though it feels like you would have died if you didn't get this car right now. Had I bought the Civic back then and found out that I could have done better with the 8, I would probably be regretting and drooling over it right now. It's a vicious cycle because a couple years down the road, there will be many cars even better than the 8. Better looking, more powerful etc...

So what I suggest is to first get yourself sure footed before taking the plunge to satisfy your urge to have your hands on this car. It sounds easiar said than done, I know, I've been through it. But you have to trust me on this one, you won't regret it. Doing whatever it takes - the sacrifices and changing your path in life isn't worth it.

If you find that person let me know.... ;) I have a few mods that I'd do if someone else would pay for them. :D
