cracked windshield (price of a new mod)
 

My luck today guys,
I am off to east meadow for my office visit and decide to take silvia (my rx8)
since the navi would be useful. and first I bottom out going into the local dunkin donuts yes the new kit is hurt :(
then I park work come out for some lunch and I see the front wind shield crack split maybe 5-6inch.
I have the worstluck with this windshield. I call the dealer and ball park figure without my vin on me. $800 not installed.
thats nutso I rather get a big brake kit LOL :)
so now I have to call my insurance Liberty Mutual they arent the best and I live in NJ. im merely posting to vent while still in L.I working

windshields are ....... sorta cheap compared to other auto parts depending on your insurance ded. ... alot of insurance wont cover it ... that something like that happen to me right when i got my car

The dealer is the most expensive, you could shop around.

oh i didnt read that 800 in thwere .... yeah thats alot from a dealer if you go somewhere else i got it done installed and everything less then 300

Weird. I came out this morning to the garage to find mine cracked as well.
My crack is almost 14", though. Came out of nowhere.
Insurance will cover it (provided it is longer than 6" or so), but check that your comprehensive deductible is less than the cost of the replacement.

if insurance is covering his because its more then 6" then crack yours a little more? =x

Your insurance will cover a crack like that. I think you're only out a hundred bucks or so.

wow. My insurance company advised me of a broker they use for that. I signed up with them and thank god, have a huge pressure chip. Definetly worth going through someone like that (and not through your insurance).

call a glass place they will replace it much cheaper then the dealer. the dealer just calls a glass place to do it anyway, then charge you an arm and a leg and they pay a couple hundred

agreed, call a local glass place, most will even come to your work and change it out on site.

I called a local class place to get mine replaced & they qouted me 420 installed.. For some reason the RX8 was twice the price of my LS & the g/f TSX.. All 3 cars cracked.. WTF?

The 8 is higher than most other cars. I called and got quotes and even the glass guys took a breath brfore telling me the price after looking it up by model. You could almost hear them mutter "Holy Sh!t"

Yeah. Safelite said its almost $600 and that is without a tint band.
Part of the problem is the shape - its a compound curve - but the price also includes the mirror mount pre-glued. The other expense is the trim/surround, which cheaper places will try to reuse (which is a no-no; its gets cut when you remove the old glass and they try to make up for that with a ton of silicone).

If you want expensive, try pricing out the rear window. Because of the integral antenna and defroster, the compound curve and the finished edge (using a huge rubber gasket instead of a surround/trim), the typical quote for the rear is over $1k.

It happens because Mazda has an excellant seal. Just like th VW bugs that could float.

Hence when there is a change in temperture, the differance is too grat between the outside and inside temp of the car hence crack.

Mine happened when I parked, went into a store for ten minutes, came out and CRACK..

The temperture increased at least 10 degrees during that time frame. It was going to be a hot day.

Add all the heat from the engine and Crack.

The RX-8 is completely unsealed. There are two vents called "extractors" in the trunk that vent to the inside of the rear bumper covers.

The crack is caused by a temperature differential between the inside and outside of the glass acting on a fault in the glass - usually a chip or point of impact - and causing unequal stress in the temperament.

Without a fault, tempered glass can withstand a temp differential of thousands of degrees from one side to the other.

The chip/fracture/stress point may not be clearly visible and might even be the result of a twist or bump to the glass frame conveyed from the body of the vehicle and impacts or extreme dynamic stress.

I have a crack across the middle of the window at eye height......one side to another. I have an appointment for next week for a new windshield. It cracked from a small chip one day when it was below zero out...and I turned on the defrost :(

My windshield has a crack too. Sweet. Also have an appointment next week.

Out here (and everywhere else I've lived) you call and they come either that day or the next.
Doesn't cost anything extra - most of the time, these "shops" don't even have a real shop. They are purely mobile.

I called my insurance at 1:30 this afternoon and they will replace it tomorrow at noon.

I made an appointment for when I had time...they would have done it the same day...but I was too busy :)

I couldn't drive with a crack like that.
Then again, I don't drive when the car is dirty (which it never is)!

Jeff = hardcore :D: LOL I've been driving with it for a while...didn't want to change it till the "rock season" was over on the roads. It has been a PIA...but it is the second time I've changed it....and I didn't want to do it again before track season.

Its always "rock season" in Phoenix. Sand season, too.

Video is out of control. Every time I play it for someone, I get questions that need to be answered. So, I have to go back and answer them.

I'd love to rush it out the door, but that isn't my style. I wouldn't mind the cash flow, but I can't put my "approved" stamp on something that can't stand on its own.

My "real" work has gotten kind of imposing as well, so I can't dedicate as much time to it.
Hopefully, I'll start passing around another draft in the next few weeks.

BTW - I use "uneducated" proofers - I am trying to initiate the uninitiated, so having car people watch it would be less effective to me. I'll be mostly using the people that work with Niki, who are all mortgage people and probably not car-savvy.

Wow this is some phenomenon all of a sudden everyone's windshield is cracking.

I am afraid to look in the garage to see if mine is cracked. :scared:

Yah, that's a state-to-state thing. MD used to be total coverage before they moved it to comprehensive.
Serial power steering failures is what you should be afraid of.
Looks like about 1/2 dozen this week alone with RP and some others joining in the fun.
