A couple questions about 05 RX8

How's it going.

I have a 07 Mazda 6. I like it decently, but over the past year i've fallen in love with RX8s. I'm very aware of the MPG downgrade, but what about insurance? I hear for some people it doesn't change, and that only some insurance companies recognize it as a 4-door. I have Liberty Mutual- does anyone else? Do they recognize it as a 4-door or what? My 6 is a 3 litre V6, it seems logical to say that my insurance would go down.

Thanks a bunch.

They don't simply look at specs of cars. They know what the car is, and they will look at the risk fact. That is, they will look at how often the car is*insert risk factor here* and how often it happens for specific age groups. At this point, they will place you into these certain criteria and asses your risk factor and come up with an "appropriate" amount.

Well right but I'm just wondering mainly if Liberty Mutual classifies it as a 4-door or not.

I believe it is classified as a 4DR with a 1.3L engine. I think the 8 has decent rates especially if one is older, beyond mid 20s.

How many doors a car has does not factor into the rate. Rates are calculated based on risk...driver and vehicle. I can tell you that I pay right around $500 a year for my 8. I also know that one of the other people in the local club pays $1000 a quarter for his 8. I can tell you that the Speed6 and RX8 are at least in the same vehicle class according to the insurance company I work for. This will make the rates about the same between the two cars for the same driver.

The best thing you can do is call up your insurance agent...tell him you are looking at a car and request a quote. Provide the VIN of the car and see what happens.

well doors are calculates actually, I use USAA and they consider it a 4 door. I used to have a mustang years ago before my mazda 6 and now my rx8 and the insurance was definitely higher, that and I asked them about the door situation. Then again USAA is for military families and active duty so maybe thats why?

I'm sorry...no. The fact that 4 people can get into your car comfortably instead of 2 at a time has no bearing on how much you pay. Engine size, cost of parts and probability of theft come into it more as far as the physical car is concerned.

Actually 2 vs. 4-seat does have a bearing. Here in MA, I was very pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the insurance for my 2005 was. USAA too, and it's categorized as a four door with only 1.3L. I pay more for my daughter's Mazda6 (given young female driver, but still). Otherwise I agree. The theft & accident statistics and parts costs are the largest impacting items. Thankfully we have a niche car (relatively low theft and number of accidents) with many reasonably valued parts common across the Mazda line.

Hmmmm... I think I just came up with another reason not to 'upgrade' to a Cayman.

Devilboi, then maybe your particular state or insurance company...or both, have a different standard, doors do matter here in texas and I have confirmed it with my insurance company just to satisfy a curiosity, next time instead of arguing do a little research. It's not a matter of comfort its just what the insurance company sets as a standard.

I also have USAA and yes it is categorized as 4 door w/ 1.3L. For reference (while still living in TX) I switched from full coverage on a '95 Eclipse 2dr NA 2.0L (in 2005) to full coverage on a 2005 RX-8 (4-door) w/ only about a 10-15% increase in rates. I thought they had made a mistake when they first gave me the quote.

I work for one of the top 5 auto insurers in the US and my sister and best friend do pricing for us. I have done the research...I know the facts. I know what the inputs are and I know how numbers are adjusted to get a rate. There are hundreds of factors that go into a rate...but one of them is not the number of doors on the vehicle.

I don't know much about insurance practices but I don't think USAA is the norm when it comes to auto insurance.

That's true. They're more like a credit union, where you get a nice "subscriber’s savings account" payback every end of year.

USAA was originally founded for US Armed Forces Officers, later included Enlisted, and is now a general populace firm. They never forget their servicemember roots however and have always been great to deal with, which is why I've been with them for more than 33 years, Auto and Home insurance.

And again, 2 vs. 4 door does make a difference, at least to USAA.

^ Yeah, those dividends are a nice little bonus and should be something that all auto insurers do .

Wow, your insurance company actually pays you?

I should be getting a better deal, I need to shop around. I'm 35, never had a wreck, and only one ticket in my life for going 45 in a 35. And Geico is absolutely killing me on the 8.

It shouldn't be. Mine costs just under a grand for a year in SoCal with them and I have no tickets counting towards my driving record.
