Copycat failure

[EDIT] Removing my obviously confused comment about being out

I just drove home slowly and safely, obeying all traffic laws (yes, even the speed limit)....except the slowly and safely in the RX8 doesn't translate to slowly and safely in other vehicles.

I took a turn on the way home at a comfortable 28 mph...but the car behind me tried to follow at similar speed, lost traction, overcompensated, and proceeded to spin a full 360 degrees across the entire width of the road.

Did I mention I love this car?:)

Please be careful Llathos . . . and glad that you had a good night out. I ran across my future father-in-law on the highway a few weeks back in mercedes S600 V-12. He started following me so for fun I went around the ramp interchange that we were both taking at the normal speed that I do that in the 8. It feels perfectly fine to me, but the way that big Mercedes hunkered down on its outside wheels was kind of amusing. He dropped back after that; there was another curve coming.

Did I mention I love this car? :)

Driving drunk.... youre an idiot.

kellybrf 06-06-2004 02:51 AM

im not going to pretend ive never driven with one too many beers in my system, but my hardfast rule in the 8 is that if ive had one, im not driving. too much risk, if you cant go out and not drink then you have bigger problems...

sferrett 06-06-2004 04:18 AM

I'm wondering what the point was of you even mentioning that you'd been drinking? It's got nothing to do with someone following you around and offramp and not being able to keep up - seems all it seems to be for is to possibly illicit some kind of feedback from the folks reading (saying how stupid an action it is) or to brag about it...

Rotarian_SC 06-06-2004 09:37 AM

I took a curve at 40 with a Silverado right behind me. I stay completely on my side of the road while he managed to have such a huge amount of body roll that he went through the other lane and had two tires in the wrong lane and the other off the road.

Same rule for me an the 8, any drinks and I'm not driving it back.

TheColonel 06-06-2004 09:44 AM

Don't have my 8 yet (God, "soon" just never seems to come...) , but I certainly won't drive with anything in my system. I don't drink anyway though. Beer is foul.

bowman 06-06-2004 09:48 AM

Are you bragging about driving drunk?

ptiemann 06-06-2004 09:06 PM

Wow.. an S600? Isn't that the car that has more torque than the Ferrari Enzo? Or was it the E55 AMG? Somewhere around 670 lb/ft, slightly more torque but 20% of the price of an Enzo..

Did he let you drive the Benz yet?
How does it feel against the RX-8?

Jesus christ people...I wasn't drunk.

I had 3 drinks over 7 hours, do the math. I'm not retarded, I would NEVER EVER drive drunk. Ever. Looking back on my post (which I made while exhausted, so I apologize), I can see why I might have made that impression.

Fact is, I've never been pulled over in the 10 years I've been driving, and the idea of the cop smelling anything on me and making me take a breathalizer (sp?) is a source of anxiety...that's all I meant to convey.

The point was the car behind me losing it....I've never seen that happen in front of me before.

Again, not driving drunk. At all. Sober as a nun.

MTLbroker 06-07-2004 10:51 AM

Who says nuns are sober? But seriously, some places have a zero-tolerance on drinking, no.

I've been stopped once. I wasn't required to take a breathalizer as I wasn't drinking. But I remember the feeling as I rounded a bend. Saw the roadblock and subsequently got pulled over. Even though I did not have a drink, you still get that "heart in mouth" feeling. Not pleasant.

3 drinks over 7 hours could be bad if you weighed 43 lbs. Maybe they assumed you were very skinny.... :D

Raevik 06-07-2004 02:26 PM

Well I am smallish in frame....but I still weigh 170lbs:)

It doesn't matter...the dmg is done. I'm officially labelled "the drunk driver" on these forums now

Sigh...:(

Lufa 06-07-2004 05:01 PM

Yeah, I try to never drive at all if I am out drinking, but if I do, like after work on Friday I limit myself to 3 drinks total.

had a very similar experience to your, there is this 110 degree curve at a very poorly planned intersection near my house, that I have become adept at taking around 35-45mph DSC on, tried it once at 30 with DSC off and wow... not that good of a driver. Now normally I wont go over 25 if there is another car in sight. However this ride home from work a mustang was on my ass the entire ride home, so I took the corner going at 35, the mustang kept pace with me until the apex of the curve when its back end went flying out, he ended up on where a side walk would be if they ever sold commercial lot attached to the corner.

I love my 8 too.

CruelNewb 06-07-2004 05:57 PM

I had a BMW M3 follow me at a Freeway junction that was intented for 15 mph, it was one of those circular ones. I was going 90 when we started to turn he backed off. =p

Rotor_Newbie 06-07-2004 11:34 PM

I love these stories. I've had too many of those to list. From Civics, Camaro, to G35s, none of them can keep up with the 8 around corners. They're still half way around the bend by the time I'm through the freeway entrance and onto the freeway.

There were this time when the M3 passed me right before the freeway entrance. I decided to see what it can do so I caught up to him right before the freeway entrance. We entered going 38mph and exited at 48-50mph. I was able to catch up with him around the bend, which was really surprising. What surprised me was after the bend. I was able to keep up with him on the straight away. Then we both hit 80mph and we got our sanity back and took our foot off the accelerator... Boy, that was fun... Too bad we were not on a road course...

DavisRx8 06-08-2004 02:52 AM

Most times (when you have two individuals who are aware and willing to compete/ flex), it isn't about which car is faster or has a better suspension...it usually comes down to which driver is willing to take the risk and push it further....

About 2 years ago, we were traveling on route 183 here in Austin. About a mile or so ahead in the oncoming traffic, a mustang and a Miata got into a race. Note that this stretch of 183 is straight as an arrow. The mustang went out of control, crossed the grass median, and got t-boned by a ford exposition(expedition) that was 1 car length in front of us. The mustang folded up like an accordian and of course the fuel tank let loose. Needless to say, both occupants of the "stang" died instantly.
That's a real stable car you build there Mr. ford.

Raevik 06-08-2004 08:42 AM

Jesus. That's a depressing story. I wonder what they did to lose control on a straightaway....
