Coolant Level Sensor replacement?

I know there's a TSB somewhere but I think that's when the car is in warranty. I've passed the 3 years.

Anyways, I go to dealer and tell them the problem. The guy knows it happens to a lot of 8's and checks the car.

Well, the price I was quoted is $357 to replace the damaged sensor or something. Like seriously? :eyetwitch

I'll have to be slightly retarded to pay that much for a little light that comes on & off on several occasions. Even though it annoys me.

What have you guys done? Has anyone replaced the sensor? or know the cause for the abnormal occurrence? The coolant level is fine. I checked that before going to the dealer.

The guy at the dealer also said the car is fine, it's just the sensor malfunctioning. I guess I can live with that? :squint:
Anyone one else living with that?

Here's my thread on the subject, but the thread is longer than you really need.

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/coolant-bottle-greatest-secrets-revealed-182793/

Here's the bottom line:

www.mazmart.com was running a special on the bottle here recently, don't know if they still are or not.
The sensor is integral to the bottle, so you can't just buy the sensor.
Direct bottle link = http://www.mazmart.com/ItemDetail.aspx?id=531

If you have the low coolant light and don't want to replace the bottle, then you can just unplug the sensor and check your coolant often. I think I would wrap the PCM side of the connector that will be dangling with electrical tape or something in order to keep it dry(and keep crud out) because if the two terminals or wiring short on that side, you are going to get a coolant light. See just about the last post in the thread above for a pic of where to unplug it if not sure.

Now, you could also just take the bottle out and fill it with White Vinegar for the night, then shake the hell out of it, flush it out real good with water, and then put it back in. Some have had luck with that.

The gritty details are in the thread I linked as I went way over the top in my experiments!

Yeah, I was pissed and decided to tear the old one apart. One thing lead to another....and there ya go, that long @ss thread.
You can take it out of there in 10 minutes and try the cleaning method if you don't want to spend the bucks, but for sure..................don't pay that $357 number when you can get it delivered right to your door for less than $180.00(which I realize isn't cheap), but way mo betta!

Or.......like I said.........unplug it and just check your level when you check your oil......which you should be doing fairly often.

I'll probably do what you did. It will take me some time to figure out how exactly I'll do it but yea, I'm not spending $357 plus their labor fees or w/e.

And nah, don't want to unplug it. More work for me if I do. :lol2:

If by that you mean....you'll get a new one.
Keep the old one and clean it up to use as a potential back-up.

It will not take you very long to change it out.........it's pretty easy.
