conversion from auto to manual..????

how much would it cost and what parts are needed to convert my auto tranny to manual.
i am happy with the auto but to get the most out of the renesis a manual tranny is a must.
you're probably wondering why i didnt get the manual in the first place but i had a good deal on this auto i coulndt let it go.

carbonRX8 12-20-2005 01:01 AM

Easy. Trade your auto in for a manual. Seriously, all considered, if the stick is what you want, it just doesnt make sense to do anything else.

NgoRX8 12-20-2005 01:06 AM

Yup, seriously trade-in for a manual. It's the easiest deal because it will cost a bundle to get the transmission conversion, and then the 4 port versus the 6 port engine.
I'm going to do the trade soon because time has come. ;)

alcimedes 12-20-2005 01:17 AM

Agree with the above posters. If the only difference were the actual transmission, and you could do the change yourself it might be worth trying to go from an auto to a manual, but you also have different ports on the engine and a different ECU to deal with. Not worth the effort.

Detrich 12-20-2005 01:31 AM

is it just me, or are some peeps here just raging MAD? i read about some wanting to tear out their dashes to install factory navs. and, now wanting to change an at to an mt?!!

did they know there is a BROCHURE to look at to select options B4 signing the check- or did they just blindfold themselves, spin around 10 times, and point to whichever 8 was facing their direction on the lot and say, "yep, uh huh- that's the ONE i'm getting!"

LOL

carbonRX8 12-20-2005 01:34 AM

It's you.

It is perfectly reasonable to buy a car and then want to change out one of the MOST MAJORIST PARTS of the car to make it just like another car THAT YOU COULD HAVE BOUGHT AT THE SAME DEALER!!!

allmotorRX8 12-20-2005 02:01 AM

just trade it in for a manual

Detrich 12-20-2005 02:44 AM

umm... isn't that what i was very SARCASTICALLY implying? LOL. i think we r agreeing here. unless u didn't get my joke... ;)

cstokes24 12-20-2005 09:37 AM

Or...if you want the power and still desire an auto you can get an 06 auto....ithat is if there is an 06 release

8_is_enuf 12-20-2005 09:41 AM

Man you guys are harsh...

I was thinking of converting mine into a Ford 4X4 truck with a diesel motor, but I don't even want to ask what that conversion might cost now..

I can see why you would want a 4x4....but why on earth a Ford? :whipping: :mdrmed:

Only thing you could probably do is get the 5spd manual from oversees and put that bad boy in.

Not worth it. Prolly should have researched that prior to making your purchase.

alcimedes 12-20-2005 10:29 AM

Or it could be that the person buying the car initially needed/wanted an automatic and that whatever that reason has changed now.

I know people who'd buy automatics when they had a lot of rush hour traffic driving. If you suddenly find yourself at a new job with no traffic on the way to or from work, suddenly a manual is a much nicer proposition. There could be a variety of reasons someone might buy a car and after time need something other than what they originally bought.

Just so happens in this case there's not much the poster can do about it other than trade the car in for a manual.

That's me :)

My first car was a 5spd b2200, second car 84 rx7 auto, 3rd car 84 rx7 5spd, 4th car 325i auto, 5th car, 325is 5spd, 6th car 540i auto, 7th car rx8 6spd...

See a pattern? :Eyecrazy:

But you see, every time i realized i had to get rid of the car, not change the tranny inside of it.

I'll never learn, my next car will prolly be auto (e60 m5 7spd smg III counts as auto right? :bootyshak )

Like everyoe has said it is just going to be easier for you to trade in the 8 than to do the whole process of switching to a manual. Besides te auto has a 4 port renesis with less hp. Good luck with what ever you decide.

kurtslash 12-20-2005 11:45 AM

ok..

thanks for all the replies but the truth is that when i got the car (it has a salvage title but no ploblems or rattles so fas whatsoever) i only paid 12000 for it. its a deal i couldnt pass. now i know how to drive manual thats why i want to get a manual but since my car has a salvage title i cant trade my car in for another. i am so happy with the auto but it would be so much fun with the manual. thanks any way. any one interested in trade you 8 for my 8 and some cash? lol.
why do people have to be so sarcastic when they dont know the the whole situation.

cleoent 12-20-2005 11:52 AM

just buy the s/c kit that's coming out for the 4port.

Because it is so much FUN! Try it!

No offence intended. All fun and games. Trade your AT for a MT. Bye!

don't waste your time. I've done this many times on hooondaaas and acuuuraaas. You need to drill another hole in firewall, so you pay welder many big bucks for tiny little hole, find new parts i.e. center console, shift boot, ecu, new brake and gas pedals that comes with a clutch pedal. Chances are you're not going to find the parts you need right away. unless you go to every silver 8 that has been in a crazy accident and you can go vulture some parts off of it. Time, money, and sanity is wasted on this project. Better to trade the car in. :Eyecrazy:

Now *that* is a great deal. Congrats on the major score. You, of course, realize that everyone on this forum paid 2x or 3x that price for their RX-8s, right? Now they'll hate you because they're jealous.
;)
(for the humor impaired ;) = kidding )

You know, if we were not on opposite sides of the country I would make you a serious (and hopefully, helpful) offer to buy your car for my wife for a fair price around $12,000. She has no interested in manual at all, but likes the body style. Then you could use your cash as a down-payment on a new/used manual.

I can't imagine there's anything else to do in your situtation, but I wouldn't criticize your having jumped at a great deal on a cool car.

It's their hobby. ;) My hobby is to ask the whole situation, but I don't think its as much fun so I'm considering a change.

Let go of your courtesy. I feel the scorn you have for your fellow forum members. Let your sarcasm flow. Only then will you understand the true power of the Dark Side.

If you do not turn, you will be banned. (imagine Vader smiley here)

The problem isn't the transmission, the problem is that they use completely different versions of the Renesis. The auto Renesis has an engine with 40 hp less, 4 ports per rotor instead of 6, a lower redline, and more. If you wanted your current auto RX-8 to perform like a manual RX-8, you can't just change the trans, you have to swap out the entire engine as well. If you managed to just put in a manual trans, you'd still have a slower RX-8 than the factory 6-port, 238 hp manual trans cars.

Y&Y 12-20-2005 04:34 PM

^^hehe I forgot about that. Ya so doing the auto to manual swap is uselss and overly expensive.

therm8 12-20-2005 05:31 PM

It would be a little faster with the 5spd or 6spd, so it's not totally useless. Somehow you'd have to fool the ecu into thinking the 4AT is still there. Changing the ecu to the 5spd's would be cost prohibitive. The CAN bus won't recognize it, from what I understand. All in all a supercharger costs less and would give better performance. Hell, the hit you'd take on trade would be significantly less than the swap.
