I emailed Mazda asking about my confirmation number. Here is the response:

Confirmation that your online order request for a 2004 Mazda RX-8 should be sent to you within minutes of your submission. Visiting your selected Mazda dealership is the next step, as you have noted that you have done. The dealership should have completed any necessary paperwork with you, this will serve as additional confirmation.

When your order is submitted by Irvine Mazda to the factory (typically within 30 days of your visit to the dealership) you will receive a notification. It sounds like the dealer submission confirmation is what you are referring to that your friends have received. Again, this will come automatically when the factory receives the order from Irvine Mazda (probably within 30 days). If you have questions about when this specific dealer has or will submit the order, I would suggest contacting them.
