Updated: Common Sense -vs- Mazda - Squeaky Tranny

Just 3 months ago I had my transmission checked because it squealed really bad when in neutral. The problem was found to be the throw-out bearing which I suspected and read about on this forum.

NOW...after 3 months, the problem has returned. The dealership e-mailed Mazda and they gave them instructions on things to check. I understand this is protocol, but what else could this be?

Searching on the forum lead me to many conclusions, but throw-out bearing seems to be the one that makes the most sense. The sound stops when I press in the clutch. Anyway...I'd like to hear your feedback before I take the car in on Wednesday. Hopefully I will be able to make it to the Virginia Tech car show this Saturday. BAH...

Mine doesn't make a "squealing" sound but it makes kinda like a static noise when in neutral but when i press the clutch in it stops.

The scratching sound you hear when in neutral is normal with our cars. I'll take it you didn't know that because you haven't had the car for that long.

That actually may be two things; 1) The release bearing is chirping against the pressure plate. 2) The pushrod that pushes against the release fork needs to be lubed. I would suggest greasing the pushrod that is outside the trans under the car (driver's side, 11:00 position on the tranny) and adjusting the clutch pedal free-play to factory spec of 1/4"-1/2" at the pedal pad (where your foot presses). Also keep in mind that if your free-play has increased recently you may have a problem with the pedal assembly itself.

^ was in response to my and anothers question about a squeak/chirp from the tranny when in neutral. Mine would go away when I would press on the clutch.

This fixed my squeak after about 15 min of work (lifting the car and finding the grease).

EXCELLENT post. Thank you. I will update with results.

Update:

Mazda will be replacing the pressure plate, shift fork, and other things. Wow...almost less expensive to just replace my tranny and admit defeat.

You know my only problem with reading the forums is....Just like when you watch commercials for "name brand medicine" you always go "I HAVE THAT" even though only women can have it or whatever lol. I always feel like that after reading this stuff. " I HAVE THAT PROBLEM TOO" lol, but yeah mines just the rocks in a blender thing.

Sorry thread jacking to rant, but sounds like you are already fixed up haha.

Update:

Dealership calls me today after they receive the parts to replace. They said that my clutch is worn badly, has loose springs...etc. "You will need to be charged $290 for the clutch".

See...I am aware of the warranty and what it covers. I have read it 100 times. I know that wear and tear parts like the clutch are not covered. HOWEVER...my car shows a clear history of transmissions problems after owning the car for a year.

1.)Sychros replaced.
2.)Throw-out bearing replaced
3.) Pressure plate replaced
4.) Shift fork replaced
5.) MORE bearings replaced

The guy on the phone has the audacity to tell me that the parts that have been replaced have no effect on the clutch failure. I told the guys I know cars FAIRLY well...and that wouldn't make sense to ANYBODY. Considering I just got the throw-out bearing replaced 2000 miles ago...and they CHECKED the clutch...and said it was fine...that is not a good argument to make.

I am currently in a cage match with Mazda, the dealership and myself. I will probably lose but I will not just be bullied by ignorant assumptions and terrible service. Common sense order of operations: Bad Transmission >> Bad Clutch.

I agreed to pay the $290 and get the clutch replaced WITHOUT accepting fault thanks to customer service. So we are waiting on whether or not I will get a check in the mail.

The district manager will decide whether or not I have a case to get the clutch replaced.

Already done...I'm a radio DJ in the area for a Top 40 radio station...a stand-up comedian in VA and a Car Club @ VT member.

People are already aware of my anger...doing on the radio I have to be a little more creative for obvious reasons. Sigh...I LOVE this car though. Love it. It's like being married to woman that you KNOW is cheating on you...but you love her anyway.

I am also having the squeaky release fork. What type of grease was used to fix the squeak?

leer125 12-16-2009 11:53 PM

squeaky release fork?? can spell out a better description? I have a metal swirling sound when cluth is out and it goes away when clutch is depressed, is that your problem?

Razz1 12-17-2009 09:39 AM

Good thread with diagram.

huh? hmm ..

for that I just used some Mobil1 Synthetic Grease, the Red stuff. Couple bux from Autozone u get them and you should have enough for the life of your car.

Its pretty painful to work at that area. mad little space to take the slave out and put grease all over .... Argh ... maybe Im too big for that kind of job ? ...

bsteimel 12-17-2009 10:48 AM

I don't have a squeaking noise but more like a whirling mechanical noise when i engage the clutch. I assumed this noise is because we have more spur gears the most transmissions. There are multiple thread on it throughout the forum. I have had this noise since i bought the car and i had my transmission rebuild and clutch replaced. The noise is louder then the engine and you have to push in the clutch to make it go away. I'm pretty sure you probably don't have a problem in the first place, but hey nothing wrong with a new transmission.

Mine was rebuild because i couldn't use second gear without seriously grinding it, also fifth wouldn't engage without seriously grinding either.

CarAndDriver 12-17-2009 11:43 AM

This sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. I'm going to go forward with replacing the clutch at 36K. Perhaps the previous owner was hard on it.

Iluvmy8 01-17-2010 10:36 PM

omg same thing lol

OMG I AM ALSO HAVING scratching noise!!? and my car burns oil like wtf man!? + no horsepower in the lower end!? maybe i should post all over the place and ask why.. and not read anything or even the answer. even in THE SAME THREAD that explains the answer to my question!

nycgps 01-17-2010 11:27 PM

Clogged Cat?

Other stuff ?

Search ?

BReal-10EC 09-13-2011 12:59 PM

Thank you for the diagram. :yesnod:

This makes perfect sense for the inconsistent clutch squeak I am getting no

Bump so others with this issue may see the thread before taking to stealership that will suggest a new clutch or transmission.

Smurfy 10-10-2011 10:22 PM

I have almost the same issue. I hear squeaking nosie under my 8 around the tranny area. I can assure you it is not coming from the engine, just to be clear. Its very noticable that it is coming from the transmisson. I had a transmisson fluid flush last month, my car has 113k, Auto, new engine/mounts, and new belts. The noise would only come on (loud) when I shift it to Reverse, but it goes away when I put it in Drive or Park. Can someone help me out as to what is making that annoying nosie?

Prophet 10-11-2011 01:27 AM

Just how much noise is normal on these things? I know the Series 2 gets the MX5 gearbox, but it's a bit noisy at times. Silent when cold, but after a drive makes noise when in neutral with the clutch engaged. Disengage and it goes away. My Cavalier did the same thing after the aluminum Spec flywheel went it. Was just vibration normally dampened by the heavy steel flywheel. Same noise though. Also makes a lot of gear noise in first and second. Almost like straight cut gears. I feel no odd vibrations and the car changes gears fine. So I think the noise is normal. At least I have been assuming that since I got it.
