Cold Weather
With the weather obviously getting so much colder in the East now. I've noticed that when you first turn the car on in the morning and drive initially it is just a little bit harder to shift into 2nd from first.
I basically just drive real slow and and shift very gently into 2nd and eventually it gets okay after the oil has warmed up. I just thought I'd mention this here. |

Actually, when I was in much colder weather in Northern California a few weeks ago, I experienced something similar, and have with my other cars, which have all had manual transmissions. |
yea mine seems to thump against something. It makes me have to pull the shifter a little harder into second to properly make it go in, which i don't like doing because it seems bad for the tranny. I actually made a thread of this...maybe the search button would be a good idea?

Thank You for the replies. There no malfuction in the transmission of the eights. As a matter of fact it's one of the easiest and most fluid transmission I driven. It's just the cold weather. And I guess we have to put up with it.
And I'm sorry for my spelling mistake. It was an honest mistake. |
it would definitely help if you warmed up the car while in the garage before leaving. What you're experiencing is just a cold gearbox, so naturally the shifts will be a bit notchy.

yup same here, a few rows around the gate while it's warmin up, that seems to help a tad. Just a note I HATE driving my 8 when it's real cold it doesn't seem to like it much.
|
I always let my 8 warm up for 2-4 mins before driving it from cold. We don't get super cold down here in Texas, however, every now and again it gets nice and chilly.

Just cold, stiff oil in the trans. Every (and the count it now 11) manual trans car I've owned has had this issue. If it doesn't go away when the car warms, then you need to worry.

So today here in SE Michigan the temp averaged for me around 3-5 deg F, -20 windchill. Not only did every moveable piece in the car stick, but I'm pretty sure I broke something when lowering the parking brake (something cracked). And when I started it for the first time, then engine jumped to around 5500 rpm then settled down over the next few minutes. We're in for a loooooong winter here...
|
It can get pretty cold here too, and at this time, my 8 isn't garaged. I let it warm up for 10-15 minutes before I drive it, and it does pretty good. My miles per tank has take a bit of a hit though.

I got the latest flash (N) and noticed that the car revs much more in lower temps (3500 rpms) until the engine heats up alittle.
|
Hey Martha, I didn't know inmates are allowed to drive... nice ride you have there :D

Yeah - it was very cold here this morn - 8 degrees and I let it warm up for 4 minutes and then pulled out and everything was choppy. What is the recommended time to warm up an 8 automatic?
- oh and I don't shit in my car either :p |
