Cold and Warm RX8
 

Have been wanting to bring this up and finally register today :)

Does your 8 drive differently when warmed up, comparing to cold start? For my 8, it drives OK when cold, but the car seems a bit reluctant at making every move. However, once warm up, it drives like a different car! This is especially noticeable if I warm up the car, shut it off after the car is fully warm up and fire it up again (warm). It is really much much smoother.

Other cars I have driven show some difference cold and warm too, but 8 is definitely the most noticeable.

pretty sure the car runs best when warmed up..thats when the rotary has the most power.
My 8 is real laggy when its cold when i drive it.

Actually my car feels the same across the board.
I don't push it hard when it's cold so I don't I'd feel much difference.

I don't really push my 8 when cold either. But it is still quite reluctant to go anywhere when cold...very much like myself when waking up in the morning. :sad:

Mine is fine when it's cold. I have to stay alert about keeping revs down til it's warm - does not feel at all reluctant.

I keep mine under 3k RPM until it is fully warmed up. At first I was warming it up to normal before driving; but my friend, who owns a '92 RX7 Twin-Turbo said I shouldn't let it sit but for about 30 seconds or until it starts warming up, then keep it under 3k RPM until it is warmed up to normal.

I have noticed on cold nights after warming up it responds better, but it is not a huge difference, but it is noticeable..

Your friend is right, you should not sit there and wait for the car to warm itself up while idling...for any car.

I never did that with my Jeep, but I am new to rotaries and I knew I had to let it warm up before revving it too high because the apex seals aren't properly lubricated 'til the engine is warm.

Now I will run it for about 30s or until the needle starts to move and then I will start driving and keep it under 3-4k RPM until it his the 'normal' mark then I get more 'free-spirited' lol

The gearbox is notchy when the car is cold, but that's about all.

Now that you mention it, I've noticed that too.

The equivalent is true on all cars. Cold oil is thick, it doesn't flow into all the places it should. Nothing really special about rotaries, other than the general paranoia about apex seals.

On the notchy gearbox...mine was notchy when new, but smoothed out after a few thousand miles. I don't notice any particular difference when cold, but I drive fairly gently til it's warmed up.

FWIW, temp gauge reaching normal is warm enough to shut off without fear of flooding, but you should wait at least a few minutes beyond that before hitting it hard or redlining. Oil temp always takes longer to come up.
