Cloth to Leather ???

Has anyone had their cloth seats changed from cloth to leather? Did you like the results? Dealer says local shop does a good job. I've had my car for about 5 months, wish I would have gotten the leather.

Raptor2k 12-14-2006 09:10 PM

If you like leather...why wouldn't you like the results?

Go for it, as long as it's not a rip off

Punksux 12-14-2006 09:13 PM

i kind of wish i didnt get the leather. There are some creases that are starting to develope which does not make me happy. If it wasnt for these creases than i would say definitely the leather.

Anyone who has leather, would you recommond two-tone or black on black? Is it two different shades of black or just one?

tmak26b 12-15-2006 06:52 AM

Two tone is hot

New Yorker 12-15-2006 08:13 AM

I like two-tone. I find the 8 is one of a number of cars that feels a little too dark—too much black—with the black seats. (Though the black leather is worse than the black cloth in this regard.) The two-tone picks things up a little.

Do a search—a number of people say that, for what you'd pay for Mazda leather, you get better quality going aftermarket.

dmc27 12-15-2006 09:52 AM

^ Exactly what I was thinking. For the price:quality ratio you're probably better off going aftermkt. But that's prlly true for any aspect of the car, inside & out.

Check w/a few upholstery shops about prices and then go for it. 2-tone looks great, though I'm not a fan of the red leather in many 8s.

EDIT: Where R U?

RotaryP7 12-15-2006 11:12 AM

I like cloth more than leather somehow.. Don't know why? :)

manek1 12-15-2006 11:25 AM

if you're in the OC, Ca area and would consider buying the OEM Black/Red leather seats let me know.

KimiFelipe 12-15-2006 11:33 AM

There are a lot of aftermarket leather options that are light years better than the stuff that any maker, but mazda in particular, puts in their cars.

We are about to re-skin our leather miata seats, had the car 7 years and this reskin is about 5 yr overdue. The leather we're getting from a custom miata guy is fantastic- better than a lot of leather on lower end furniture - and the seats in two - tone are $550, plus we install.

Way better value than paying for leather in a new car. Unfortunately, I always want other stuff that gets bundled with the leather, like a sunroof.

My advice - don't buy someone's used OEM leather seat covers. Find a good aftermarket shop and you will get FAR better value for your money, and you will love your seats.

Sorry, manek.

Shitty OEM leather. You've probably never seen good quality leather automobile seat covers. It's amazing. The leather in my miata is so tight that my ass slides around - I hate it, and I wear specific pairs of pants when I want to really drive hard so I dont slide around. Go ahead and laugh but this sucks!

The alcantara in my RX8 is really great, not to mention that the parts that are leather seem to be a higher quality (thicker too) leather than in the GT's.

We'll see how long it lasts.

Cloth seats are good on some cars. They are great on my Z, but I absolutely hate it on the Neon. The material just feel really moist, especially when they get older. The Z has a different feel to it, cant explain it.

I like hte two tone on our 8.

encorez 12-15-2006 06:02 PM

Do you have heated seats? Leather needs then.

Astral 12-15-2006 06:18 PM

KimiFelipe, where are you getting your Miata's leather re-skinned? Always wondered if there's a good shop to do that sort of thing aroud there. Two-tone black/blue leather in my 8 would be hot (and cold).

tmak26b 12-15-2006 06:57 PM

Heated seat is great!

SayNoToPistons 12-15-2006 07:24 PM

Get a combo. cloth and leather or step it up and suede and leather. Cloth and suede provide much more grip than leather.

Hi Astral, I am going to order the seat covers from a guy called Crazy Red Italian. He's been doing miata's for years and has an excellent rep.

I'm going to have them make the seat covers and then we are going to replace the existing ones with the new ones as a family project.

MHO - go for dark blue =)

Jacques79 12-17-2006 02:13 AM

The leather on the RX-8 feels cheap to me compared to other sports cars.

JeRKy 8 Owner 12-17-2006 03:17 AM

If you have an extra couple grand to spare then go ahead. Otherwise I'd spend the money elsewhere.

Aseras 12-18-2006 07:33 AM

I had mine done custom, see here https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...4&postcount=11 I had the dealer through it in when i bought the car. cost was @ $800. MUCH MUCH better than the stock leather seats. probably one of the most comfortable seats in a car that I've ever been in.

where did you get those blue seats? I want some!

Smokin_LaLa 12-18-2006 10:18 AM

2 tone is the bomb makes the car interior look really nice

Guisslapp 12-18-2006 12:40 PM

I am happy with my aftermarket leather seats (cost ~ $1000). I prefer the appearance over the OEM leather.
